Kinect promises "You are the controller" - but do seasoned gamers really care?
Following the initial reveal of Microsoft's new motion and speech-control gaming tech at E3 2009 - then known to us as Project Natal and since re-named Microsoft Kinect – there have been endless questions from gamers and the gaming development community about how this new form of game control technology might (or might not) improve videogames.
So it is timely to ask whether or not the current online consensus amongst hardcore gamers that Microsoft's Kinect is little more than a glorified Wii a fair judgement? Or is it a knee-jerk reaction to something they don't quite yet understand?

FuRuy has opened a Twitter account called “Project Alice” teasing a new game announcement on April 25 at 20:30 JST.
Omar writes: "With the Horizon Festival coming to breathtaking Japan, you’ll need the essential gear to prove you’ve got what it takes to become a Horizon Legend as you cruise, drift and explore an open world full of spectacular driving experiences. That’s why we’re happy to announce the newest Limited Edition Xbox Wireless Controller and Wireless Headset collection, featuring inspired designs from Forza Horizon 6. The bright cyan and lime colorways celebrate the Horizon Festival’s recognition of iconic cars and hit music, with special features that are sure to impress any collector."

A brutal reset, a smarter story, and a return to what made it great—Mortal Kombat (2011) revived the series.
15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
"Microsoft's Kinect is little more than a glorified Wii a fair judgement"
not really subjective because as we've seen there's still a big quagmire around the device's actual capabilities, what's marketing and what will people pay for at retail, and the lack of a controller which makes it markedly inferior to Wii and Move. Will hybrid games that support both kinect and a controller help? only devs can say for now until the consumers can judge for themselves.
Controllerless hardcore gaming is impractical.
I think the ultimate would be a hybrid between move and Natal.
Think of a shooting game. You could use the joysticks to move and look around and to shoot (yes you can shoot without a controller by moving your index finger but I find that using a trigger button is both more satisfying and realistic). However, for crouching and aiming you could use your body and the camera would capture that.
Another example of where this hybrid system would be great is sports games. Use the joysticks to move around and the camera to pass, shoot...
I believe that with this kind of system, the possibilities are endless. However, if the motion camera and controller remain separate, crippling limitations will be inevitable.
Great interview!
It really touches on what I'm hoping Kinect will be and lines up with my expectations. Now I only need answer to that expectation in the next 2-3 years!
The only thing I can think of, that could be amazing, is a strategy game if they can pull it off it could be incredible.
By the time anyone figures out any practical use for gaming on the Kinect it will be dead and abamdoned by Microsoft just like the Kin and original Xbox
