Let's see how much Nintendo's strategy of distancing themselves from core gamers last. After all, core gamers like progress, and Sony does just that. In the end they'll copy whatever Nintendo is doing and all those casuals lured by Nintendo will be gone, except the core gamers, the ones that buy at least 20 games per generation, will not be there with them.

Seriously, though the attach rate for the ps3 has not been something sony has bragged about. So who would risk buying a new peripheal for a systems suffering bad sales.

this is how it usually is with the wii, you buy it,you love it for a week or two and then, you forget about it.

I think Sony knows what they are doing. Just because they are in "last" doesn't mean they have a plan. One has to remember that the farther out from launch we get the more profitable it becomes to sell a PS3. It then follows that Sony would prefer to sell the majority of the PS3s that will be sold after they become profitable. I think this is why they have been priced as high as they are - they can get a healthy albeit modest install base going while establishing PSN, building a library of quality games, perhaps winning the "format war". Then right about the time that the PS3 is looking really good to pretty much every one they price of the 80 gig hits say $399 - they've sorted production out long ago so they are able to continue to meet a rapidly increasing demand. All speculation, but I don't think it's unrealistic.

Sony is the only one that I see operating in calm manner - as from a position of power. I see Microsoft rushing underdeveloped hardware out of the gate to get an early lead - which is quickly evaporating. And I see Nintendo making a something that you mom thinks looks fun, but seems to lack staying power.

We'll see how it shakes out. I'm getting all three regardless.

Sony could always bring out a console that only costs 200 bucks but has graphics like a gamecube and you could play multi player with your mom.

I think Sony's got it down. They've been in this game a LONG time and they know what we want! Maybe it got off to a bad start, but Microsoft CAN NOT...CAN NOT compete with MGS4, FFXIII, LBP, Uncharted:DF, HS, Warhawk, and ESPECIALLY...

I think HOME is the next step in the evolution of gaming. After playing with the BETA and seeing the revisions done at E3 07', this thing is just gonna DESTROY everything else.

I own an xbox 360 and a PS3 and after seeing the big gameshows this year, I feel that the PS3 has the advantage. PS3 has a games lineup which is more than what nintendo and microsoft have combined. PS3 has 15 exclusive games coming from Sony's internal studios alone this year, And then you have PlayStation Home which in my opinion is set to kick xbox live through hell. It's rumored another price drop will happen before christmas which is always good and then we have some killer exclusives to look forward to like KILLZONE2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Heavenly Sword, Final Fantasy XIII, Haze, Unreal Tournament 3, The Getaway 3, Lair, Uncharted... The list goes on and on. xbox 360 is the most unreliable piece of **** i have ever owned, and as a result of this and the recent gameshows i have chosen PS3 as my main games platform and will buy all the multiformat games im looking forward to on PS3 not xbox 360.

Once investor begin to invest billiobs into sony computer enrtainment division. thats it its over. it gets evrrything.

i kinda get the feeling that guy who wrote the article forgot that there are 140 millionen people out there that bought a xbox and a playstation 2... those people already proved they wanna play games with the already existing controllers.
i dont really see the problem in getting those 140 million to buy a playstation 3, and thats what sony is trying. but this time, microsoft is a bigger competitor than it was in the last generation, and nintendo may catch some of those 140 million people, but sooner or later most of those will buy one of the other next-gen consoles.

If I were MS or Sony I would not change their strategy. The Wii is selling well. I have one, but I have a 360 and PS3. IMO, right now the Will appeals to the mainstream, the 360 appeals to some of the mainstream and hardcore gamers, and the PS3 appealed to the hardcore gamers before the price drop. As killer-ap games are published and the prices drop the Wii will lose it steam. I hope all systems do well it's good for the consumer.

What's so sad is that "hardcore" gamers are just as arrogant as Microsoft and Sony. Spouting off crap about how Nintendo is for kids and how it has no games. Sony hasn't exactly delivered on games, either. And Nintendo has some good titles on the way.

The arrogant "hardcore" among us need to give credit where it is due. If Nintendo never sells another Wii they've already made their fortune from it. But demand is still high, so they'll sell millions more. That's just how it is. The other guys need to take a lesson.

i dont really care about the ps3 but i am interested in the blueray player, but i think even though it is winning the format war, downloadable content will take its place possible depending on size/cost of massive hard drives to store downloadable content. how many gigs is a high def movie?

Sony should continue to push blu-ray... be more aggresive with the format war... though blu-ray is winning... it needs to be declared the winner relatively sooner than later. Blu-ray taking so long to be adopted by the mass market can have a negative impact on the PS3 due to price. Sony should also push HD TV adoption since the PS3 without an HD TV is pretty much not worth the price tag...

i think sony has already lost....unless they come up with a ps 2.5 have a psremote and pschuck and make billions of minipartygames...killzone party (anyone???)

your first link is not pulling up. on your 2nd link u fail to mention why 1up thinks the 360 won't go the way of the dreamcast. Just thought I'd put that out there. Also I think all consoles will thrive. At the time of dreamcast playstation and 64 console gaming was still a realtivly new market. All u had was hardcore gamers. Think about it when dreamcast came out the majority of gamers didn't have jobs. we were all kids, now we have jobs, still play games, and have kids who play games, so the market is considerably bigger than what it was during the age of dreamcast, ps1, etc,. There's enough room for us all. Sony will be just fine, but so will the 360 and wii.

I think Sony has already taken BABY STEPS towards that with "Home". Right now people will dismiss it as another second life clone with no ramification to gaming but that is what people said about myspace when it first came out. I'm not going to say this will make te PS3 sell like hot cakes but if this thing becomes another social phenomenon than people will have to look at it very seriously. The future is all about connectivity and user generated experiences which is now being called Web 2.0 and Gaming 3.0 respectively. Home could become a bigger success than SL because PS3 is uniform platform where everyone has the same hardware so you can get much deeper and richer enviroments and interactions. Second Life's biggest flaw is that it's based on a open platform the PC in which not everyone has a computer equipped with advanced graphics chips. SL is based on now outdated technology and graphics which cannot find the lowestr common factor in all users to make a more streamlined interface.

A price drop maybe around the holiday season and boom! they will be on top yet again and keep and PS2 alive as much a possible people buying PS2's for $129 right now are going to eventually buy a PS3 in the future for about the same price.

Much like when the original PS1 started shipping with the dual shock, the PS2 slim will start shipping with a wiimote type of controller and sell for $99 this holiday season. Sony is trying to keep pace with nintendo while also saying they are the cheapest on the block with the most games.

Consumers who have yet to have gotten a ps2 (who hasn't gotten one by now???) will look at it and the library of games and be told it does motion controlling like the wii. They will buy it and sony will sell thousands more of the ps2 while hurting the sales of the ps3 in the process.

Sony's competition isnt nintendo or MS. It is themselves. The longer they continue to milk that system the longer it will take for gamers and developers to adopt the newer system. It is the early 90's all over again. In case some of you don't remember....Nintendo was milking the classic NES like crazy and sales of the SNES were low but they had to keep up development because Sega and the Genesis were on the move up the ladder and were in the same place MS is today. First in next gen overall sales but it got beat out (eventually) by the SNES.

360 may have the most sold but it won't last for long. I think MS should be playing the low under the radar card and work out a similar approach to the wiimote. So while Sony and nintendo get all the press, MS quietly release a controller with the best of both sony and nintendo's and makes it retroactive to the existing library of games. Packages it with every 360 unit sold and it doesn't become an after thought but a standard. Just like the dual shock did at the beginning of my post.
