Capcom Removes Islamic Phrase From Wii Game

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has announced that publisher and developer Capcom has agreed to remove a common Islamic phrase from its forthcoming Wii title Zack & Wiki after receiving complaints from CAIR and others.

Said CAIR communications coordinator Amina Rubin, "We appreciated Capcom's willingness to address Muslim concerns and applaud the company's swift and appropriate actions."

Thats not an offensive phrase (God is great) so why remove it!? Why everyone thinks so bad of games? We have endless movies using the phrase and some of them even abuse it but in family friendly game like this, I dont think there's any harm.

ChronoTrigger876877d ago

yes repeating God's name in a game that has no relevance to gaming at all should be removed. My respect for Capcom has really reached a new level. Thanks a lot Capcom for listening to the concerns of us muslim gamers.

Daishi6877d ago

I remember when this happened to Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time. It had a Muslim Chant in the Fire Temple that was removed in later builds. I'm a proud owner of one of the original's. Does anyone know why they put that saying in the game to begin with?

CAPCOM crossed the line...and must NEVER cross it again.

Just recently we saw how IMUS in the morning crossed the line and just referred to black women as NAPPY,HEADED, WHORES. Only until companies get the message in their bank accounts will they acquire common sense.

Some corporations just NEVER learn or seem to get the point! Using races for profits and winning awards at the E3 2007 convention for Resident Evil 5 proves that some individuals care nothing about race, its impact on the black community or the outcome of their actions.

CapCom has refused to respond to inquiries regarding Resident Evil 5 (BIOHAZARD 5) so far. In time their legal department will have to respond.

I am in the process of contacting the offices of ALL Democratic and Republic canditates for office in 2008 and sending links of comments made on every message board and podcast.

I am also working on sending correspondence to the White House in Washington along with the video from Gametrailers & others even showing the awards already recieved by voting from individuals in the gaming press. The desdain that people that are game writers from several corporations also seem to lack the sensitivity to this game.

I am willing to bet that 95% of the press giving this game the E3 award are WHITE!

Microsoft and Sony will also be getting letters about this game as well.

In addition, correspondence will be sent to AMAZON, BestBuy, Circuity City, WalMart and Target. Other companies down the line will also be notified.

My local Congressman as well as the NAACP will be notified shortly regarding this. the National Action Network will be getting these correspondence as well.

As a black man I will do my part to make sure that Resident Evil 5 does NOT sell a single copy worldwide.

If Capcom and its partners want to defend this game I thank you for your stupidity.

I'm just glad this was caught before the game was actually released. Seems surprising that CAIR would discover this but I'm sure it was just brought to their attention by a muslim gamer.

It would've been horrible for this game to be recalled, as Matt over at IGN seems pretty adamant that this'll be a sleeper hit.

killer_trap6877d ago

i'd love to give capcom a bubble for this.
we should always pay attention to other people's feelings,

MACHone6877d ago (Edited 6877d ago )

I'm usually a pretty tolerant guy, but something about this just peeves me. So just because this religious group doesn't want this phrase in this game, they get their way? Then why was the phrase there in the first place? There had to be a reason Capcom put it there. I realize Capcom made this change because it's really not a big deal and they're just avoiding worlds of conflict, but it's just that: this isn't a big deal but this CAIR has to make a huge stink about it. So, is CAIR not offended by the killing in Manhunt or the crime in Grand Theft Auto? I guess not, but God help us gamers if they were, or else we may be playing E for Everyone versions of GTA IV. My point is, I don't like the idea of these organizations that couldn't care less about videogames having any sway over what goes into them.

Now, I should probably just add that I hope my comment doesn't offend anyone, as it wasn't intended. Also, I have nothing against the Islamic faith -- I would be just as peeved if a Christian, Hebrew, etc. group did this. If you'd like to reply, please make it mature.

"Then why was the phrase there in the first place?"
it could be because a dev thought it might sound cool or whatso ever?

Why it was there? it should have never been there specially if you see where its being used.but hey you never know with japs, even locoroco did a terrific job on being racist.

ShiftyLookingCow6876d ago

do you know the term "japs" is racist?

Nine Obscure Adventure Games We Wish Had Sequels

Kotaku: "Adventure games began as some of the earliest attempts at bridging novels and gameplay. The best of them challenge notions of traditional story-telling and immerse players into the narrative with quirky characters and puzzle-solving. This list explores the obscure adventure games that deserve sequels. Any adventure games that already have sequels won't be considered."

Five Overlooked Last-Gen Games - Pixel Gate

Sean Halliday of Pixel Gate writes:

''For every blockbuster title that garners high praise and sales, there a number of games that fly under the radar. There’s plenty of great titles that have plenty to offer but, for numerous reasons, never get the love and attention they deserve. This isn’t the definitive list of the most overlooked games; it’s merely a look at few of them.''

I'm glad Chinatown Wars is there. This is one of the best GTAs in the series. Right up there with 5 and SA. Get the DS version. You won't be disappointed. Also like to add that the wanted system in GTACTW is by far my favorite of any GTA.

Venoxn4g4379d ago

its definitely better than gta IV :) i liked it a lot

Goro4379d ago

The Club sucked, where is Yakuza 3 or 4 or Binary Domain or Sleeping Dogs.

GamerEuphoria4379d ago

Since when was Sleeping Dogs overlooked?

Goro4379d ago

Since before it was available on PlayStation Plus.

mydyingparadiselost4379d ago

I think mine would be
Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom
Tastunoko V Capcom
House of the Dead Overkill
Deadly Premonition
Sam and Max
Honestly I think this last gen had a lot of overlooked titles or at least titles that didn't see the amount of sales they should have. It makes me worry for the future of the current generation.

Baka-akaB4379d ago

The Club might have been a new idea , but it doesnt mean that all of those are good .

And Deadly preomonition was hardly overlooked . It's a game that had a bigger than expected and deserved success based on the weird hype "that's it so bad you gotta play it and gonna love it" (an opinion i dont share)

GamerEuphoria4379d ago

Since the game came out I've been trying to get EVERYONE to play it, thus it popped up on this list, it's still not very well known in the UK

Monster_Tard4379d ago

Really liked WWE All Stars, never got to play it online as the servers went down by the time I picked it up.

Zack & Wiki was one of my favourite games of last generation, and one of the few Wii games I actually enjoyed.
If Nintendo do not snap up a sequel, I hope Sony or Microsoft do.

YoungKingDoran4500d ago

Inventive use of the Wiimote, even before motion plus.
This was a fun game, and wracked my brain on a few puzzles.

Now I'm just guessing here, but this game's unfortunate failure probably contributed to what turned Capcom how they are today; that is a risk-less company who tries to do everything they possibly can to not lose or miss out on a dime.
