I hope MS releases their next console first that way Sony can make adjustments on the PS4 to outperform the new Xbox by a huge margin.

my guess is

1) the brand with the least exp would leave the market to avoid consumer confusion and a cause a crash.

2) there would be a spilt between the casual and core market with a whole new console wars.

in all i'm proud sony is listening to their first party devs to get the most out of hardware while making easy to dev for and no doubt if their next console uses blu-ray then it will have BC for ps3 games.

not to bas MS but if they have first party devs i've yet to see a AAA Title ehich rivals a ps3 AAA Title

well they say the xbox360 is *easier to develop for* but just look at the games on it[the rare LoL xbox360 only games], they look nothing special do they compared to ps3 only games which look more next-gen to me

I think this is seriously a very wise move by Sony. We could argue all day about the PlayStation 3 being harder to develop for and there are benefits to its hardware as demonstrated by their exclusive and some multi-platform games.

However, at the end of the day, who knows best? I would argue the developers because they have to sit down and eventually, develop for this hardware so it's best that we get right now before we meet any resistance later on.

If they manage to offer their input and expertise in what the hardware should be, we as consumers should be reaping the benefits in years to come, because it should in theory mean we get better games.

I think it's a good move and I hope it pays off, because at the end of the day, I love gaming and I'd rather see developers working in a comfortable environment producing fantastic games.

I still think Ken should get involve some how for the most part cause his a gifted visionary plus i wouldn't want the ps4 to peak in it's first year like the xbox 360 but in a nutshell its a great initiative getting some input from first party dev in the crafting and making for the console

I hope they bring back a newer version of cell tech for ps4, this generation sony has shown that cell is the way forward, producing mind blowing games with great physics dynamics animation and gameplay you name it it's there.
It would be a shame to not use the cell now that companies are dropping their bias (like valve) and are finally making an effort to learning something new, something powerful!!!

This is genius, the most talented devs in the world for making graphics and understanding highly complex hardware will design PS4. It should be OUTSTANDING. The new cell is the collective minds of Sony's first party. While other developers struggle with PS3, often unable to get rid of jaggies or make 720p these guys pump out the best console graphics in the history of gaming, it goes without saying that when it comes to programing they know what they're doing - probably more than a most people in the industry.

This is good news. We are already going to see some of their input this fall when Move releases. Its already being integrated into some more Core titles and with Dead Space Extraction being ported to the PS3 we can see Sony went out to 3rd party devs with it early as well. The real key to Move will be the titles developed by Sony's 1st party and the 3rd party Move titles built for it in the next few years. Move will keep the PS3 alive a bit longer than previous gens. But when we see PS4 because of the Dev input there will probably be some very strong launch titles.

Just wanted to say that is completely untrue, and pretty sure the guy just made it up. All Xbox 360 games are on dual-layer discs which hold 8.5gb's. Both PS2 and the original Xbox were on single layer dvd's which held 4.37gb's Thats also what the Nintendo wii uses except with some game's such as Smash Brothers Brawl. That was on a dual layer. Don't just make up stuff to try to get you point across.

Yeah that will be great, atleast we have a confirmation that there will indeed be a new Playstation, or prehaps a new PSP. Makes me very happy that they will be making epicly awesome games for a good deal more time.

i dont want to think about next generation already. i dont have the slim. i paid lots of money for my ps3. ive had it since late 06/early 07. lets keep the momentum going this generation. developers claim to not have "maxed out" the ps3 yet so lets keep it moving. the ps2 is still in many homes. still selling. so im hoping my ps3 does the same. great news about the developers having input on the console next gen tho. lets keep pushing this cell. if the xbox(sic) developers(trash) can still push that 1987 hundai machine, can you imagine what naughty dog, guerilla, etc.. can do with the CELL. its only been like 3 years and ps3 1st and 2nd party developers have made great progress. Having software engineers and hardware engineers working in unison to develop a platform is an amazing idea.

It'll be exciting to see what comes out of such a partnership but to be honest I'm looking forward to quite a few more years of gaming awesomeness with my PS3.

If they cant keep the price down to at least 399 on PS4 it will suffer the same fate that the ps3 has.

The less systems that sell the less games you will have on the system. Maybe, instead of driving the prices up on games and systems, you can just rely on good games to sell it.

Dont give me that arguement that prices go up every year and blah blah blah. IF that is the case then by that logic we should be paying 100 bucks a game by now, which would kill gaming altogether.

What PS4 might need

2gb of ram, graphics card that is double or triple the power of the currnet PS3 chip, and 2x faster blu-ray disc reading capabilities. I dont think they would need to use a more powerful cell since the cell PS3 uses is already very powerful. If they use the PS3 cell you can play all PS3 games and keep the PS4 at a low price.

It also needs hdmi 1.4 support.

the ps4 will be a reasonable price at launch conloles! but for you Im sure you will be desperatly looking one on ebay for limited supply units @ launch for about $1,500 or more. You wont be able to handle the antacipation to wait for restocked models. ps4 will rock your socks

We don't need a next generation console. I feel like the PS3 is just begining.

I think what the exec. was trying to say was that the major devs of the PS3 are going to help push the PS3 in the right direction and when they get ready for PS4 their first parties will be big key players from the start and from the start they will help other understand that console, thus building it.

The PS4 will not be backward compatible with the PS3.

I remember xerox coping a page from a site I can't remember, saying sony is looking to game developers for hardware spec feedback, back in mid to late 2008. Then they mentioned that the ps4 is gonna be Wii-atized, No more than 2x as powerful as the current ps3. Anybody here remember that? This is no REAL news. BUT WAIT!! Sony looking at "1ST PARTY DEVELOPERS!???" for hardware spec development input?
1st party developers has NO PROBLEMS with ps3 development!! They were the dev parties that saved the ps3 from certain DOOM! It's the 2nd & mostly 3rd Party developers having the MOST trouble creating games then porting. So why sony is consentrating on 1st party developers input. I thought Sony should cater MORE to 3rd party developers also.

This can only spell bad news for the competition.

Sony is looking at 4 years before releasing another console. I think they may make some kind of add on to increase ram or the GFX accelerator to the PS3 but that's about it.

Neither Sony or Microsoft or any body else can release a $600 console because a $600 PC will easily kill it.

Consoles are dead as PC power increases and prices drop (4 core CPU's for $120 or $99)

Next "console" round will be Sony and Microsoft making PCs that play proprietary games or a PC add on.

Personally I don't even see Microsoft making another console now that Apple is getting into the PC gaming market with help from Steam and Valve.

If devs design the PS4. Woudn't this mean they will know how to get the most out of the PS4 in the first 2 years?. Wouldn't this shorten the PS4 lifecycle meaning we will have to buy a PS5 sooner rather than later?.

Its good to get the feedback from devs on what they had difficulties with but from a design point of view i am only confident if Ken is designing the PS4. Isn't the PS3 not proof enough.

However, in a way i see why Sony would let devs have a bigger say. Sony has been investing alot in them for the last couplpe of years and its only logical that they try to use their expertise from a software prespective. They are after all are he ones that will be creating the games.

I think thats a great idea letting the guys who make the games have a say in how the console is built.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
