Why PS3's New Tech Will Just Confuse Everyone... And Fail

A recent blog entry from DFC Intelligence - a video games industry market research firm that doesn't employ Michael Pachter - raised an interesting point on the back end of E3. Namely, that Sony is offering so many different features and peripherals that they are likely to confuse customers, rather than entice people into their PS3-shaped folds. As the blog says...

Sigh... all you can really do is say LOL.

From the same folks who brought you such classics as
"PlayStation Plus – Sitting On The Fence" and
"Five Ways Kinect Can Make Core Games Better" and of course
"E3: Why it's not all bad for Microsoft"

Yeah, goodluck nowgamer.

HolyOrangeCows5795d ago

Their "Five Ways Kinect Can Make Core Games Better" article was stupid. You could also use a $5 microphone and $10 webcam and do the things they listed, as none of them would need skeletal tracking.

Dragun6195795d ago (Edited 5795d ago )

PlayStation Move Bundle = $100
- Includes The PlayStation Eye, One Move controller, and Sports Champion.

That's all they need. They can use the DS3 controller as the Navi controller.

People say it will cause confusion because they think there's too many peripherals but Nintendo been doing the same thing and it's been fine selling a Wii mote, Classic controller, Motion plus, Nunchuck, etc. Sony just needs to do the marketing right. Simply market the Bundle.

BeaArthur5795d ago

You're forgetting that some Move games require two Move controllers. I could easily seeing an uniformed consumer getting confused and ultimately frustrated enough not to buy it.

callahan095795d ago

That's not true. Maybe in the future some Move games will require 2 controllers, but as of right now, not one single game announced requires 2 controllers. Some of the games in Sports Champions are "better with 2" according to the developer, but none of them *require* 2.

Tony-A5795d ago

I can understand why someone would think that, and it may very well happen, but it's really simple when laid out.

You buy the Move bundle and that's it. Eventually, when you buy another game that happens to require another Move, you buy it. So buy the bundle and a Move. Bundle and Move. It sounds similar to (or simpler than):

Buy a Wii and MotionPlus. Or a Wii Balance Board when some games require it.

thewrathman5795d ago (Edited 5795d ago )

they make some valid points.it isnt flamebait.

look at it this way.

for the nintendo you need - a wii

for xbox you need - 1 CONSOLE and kinect

for the ps3 you need - 1 console,a camera,a move controller and a probably a nunchuck navigator x number of people playing.

its easy to understand why consumer groups would think consumers would find MOVE daunting.its a lot of bits and pieces.what am i supposed to do with all thses pieces of plastic when i not playing?

will all them bits be in 1 package when i buy it?or do i have to collect individual bits as i shop?

tedious reasons.but thats the way people look at it.then it probably needs rebranding.the wii comes in nice white and sky blue colours.kinect will be purple.very friendly, casual colours..the ps3-mean black and very serious looking.

"for the nintendo you need - a wii"

"for the ps3 you need - 1 console,a camera,a move controller and a probably a nunchuck navigator x number of people playing."

Not a very accurate comparison there wrathman. You can't do much with just a Wii. You may find that to actually play games you also need a Wiimote and a nunchuck x number of people playing, you also need to position the sensor bar above or below your TV, then there's wii motion plus to "confuse" things further.

Edit:
The set up for the PS Move is very similar to the set up for the Wii and consumers have had no problems becoming familiar with the Wii, so where's the confusion?

thewrathman5795d ago

why15sky.

last i checked..a game came with the wii and so did the controller and sensor bar.and nuchuck.

actually it includes wii motion plus and wii sports resort also. and it cost little more than an xbox elite.

Wh15ky5795d ago (Edited 5795d ago )

"for xbox you need - 1 CONSOLE and kinect

for the ps3 you need - 1 console,a camera,a move controller and a probably a nunchuck navigator x number of people playing."

Future bundles for both consoles will include these, so what's your point?

The set up for the PS Move is very similar to the set up for the Wii and consumers have had no problems becoming familiar with the Wii, so where's the confusion?

cliffbo5795d ago (Edited 5795d ago )

@thewrathman

ooooh! i`m so confused i need a wiifit, plastic gun and plastic steering wheel amd camera adddon plus extra wiimotes and nunchucks and now wiifit2 aswell and soon a finger sensor thingy OH MY GIDDY AUNT WHAT AM I GONNA DO!. lol

good job i`ve got a ps3 and can cope with all this confusion. lol

rezzah5795d ago

U forgot to add X number of people for the Wii(obviously exlcuding the controller you get) contoller and nunchuck thingy. Dont forget to include batter prices, they also offer a recargable battery pack if you dont wish to pay for a constant supply of batteries (my bro hasnt learnt his lesson from this yet).

Nowgamer are trying to become the official no.1 360 fanboy site on the web or something?? Do we need another topic slating kinect/move/wiimote?? Can't we just wait for them to release and see what happens??

Confuse the casuals? The hardcore? The casuals basically eat up everything and the hardcore already know what to expect from Move. I think the author is confused.

notmushroom5795d ago

I don't see how it will confuse anyone.

You'll either buy it or you won't. I don't think Move or Kinect for that matter will do half of what the Wii did, but it will sell decently enough.

DrDreadlox5795d ago

... for that avatar, you son of a pig! LOL

Colonel-Killzone5795d ago

Flamebait article for one. And you would have to be a complete moron with NO type of knowledge of the PS3 to get confused. Also its something called asking a question you ask someone might have a answer. Sigh lame site that want some hits.

Nugundam00795795d ago

there ARE really stupid consumers..if youve ever worked in retail than you would understand....Im not trying to insult anyone..lets just say "ignorant"

jetlian5795d ago

aren't stupid at all. kinect is 1 item and thats it. wii is 1 item . ps3 is 2-4 depending on what game your playing. And to top it off sony isn't selling all 4 together!!! just the 2 basic pieces and a game

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8521d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele20d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk20d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10121d ago (Edited 21d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit20d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg20d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10120d ago (Edited 20d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14920d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle33d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit33d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog34d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog34d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad34d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_34d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage34d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda33d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
