PS3 is good value, says Eidos boss

Eidos CEO Bill Gardner has said he doesn't believe that PS3 is priced too high - but conceded that even a USD 100 price drop may not be enough to sell the machine to the mass market.

Speaking in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz Gardner said, "Sony is a big company. They know what they are doing.

"I don't think [the price cut] is enough to reach the mass consumer, but I think it is enough to get it moving again, and it will move a little bit further, and they'll need to do it again and it will move a bit further."

According to Gardner, PlayStation 3 is good value considering it includes a Blu-ray player at a relatively competitive price point.

"Go buy an HD or a Blu-ray player. Go ahead. Tell me what it costs you. Then take a look at the PS3," he said.

"I don't think [PS3 is too expensive. I do think we'll start to see additional people pick it up and use it, maybe not necessarily exclusively as a game player but as a Blu-ray player and a game player, and there is an advantage to that."

For more from Gardner, including why Eidos doesn't believe in producing day one software for new consoles, read the full interview.

I also think the PS3 is a good deal, you get alot for your money and as we all know the newest technology cost so if you want it you gotta pay...

Torch6860d ago (Edited 6860d ago )

Personally, it's a helluva good deal.

The problem is that the PS3 became the victim of a snowball effect of criticism since it's initial price announcement.

Yet few point the finger at the many other products which fall within - or exceed - the price range of the PS3. Those people fail (or refuse) to realize the amount of features and value that come with a product that costs the same as an iPhone...a MERE FRIGGIN' PHONE for Christ's sake!!!

And all said critics should realize that no one's got a gun pointed to their head: Our market provides the luxury of substitute products.

So go ahead and pick up a 360 Premium instead...it's 'cheaper' after all, right? Well that is, as long as you don't want native wi-fi, HD capabilities, Bluetooth, myriad memory card options, universal storage capabilities, rock-solid hardware reliability (thus far, anyway), and free network access.

You can always buy those often inevitable and critical 'add-ons' if you want (such as a larger hard drive, tacked-on Wifi, Live account access, etc.)

Just don't keep tally of those additional accumulating expenses, or compare features...or you'll be in for a rude awakening and realize what a steal the PS3 really is.

My intention isn't to start a pissing contest; it's only to try to make you realize that just because most people say that the world is flat, it doesn't mean it is.

Think for yourselves and don't be just another member of the herd.

Vertius6860d ago

I agree completely.

Bubble for you, Torch. Not that you need more! ;)

MACHone6860d ago

It's a great value. Sure, it's pricey, but you get plenty with it.

Mike134nl6860d ago

agree thing is not everbody wants a hd dvd player or a blue ray player

MACHone6860d ago

Correct, just like no one wanted a DVD player when they first came out, but we all see where that ended up.

Honeal2g6860d ago (Edited 6860d ago )

seriously bluray (which i think will win years from now) wont catch on for a long time i mean its just too damn expensive. In order for it to win it has to become the standard there needs to be a need for it, seriously the only that really looks better in HD is video Games ...yes movies look good but not good enough to dish out money on an HDTV and a Bluray player.

capacity is obvioulsy the number one compelling factor..but u've got ipods and portable devices whic are much easier now...

devi8i6860d ago

Yes it is......but the comments are from the company that brought you such great classics as Pocket Pool and Pony Friends

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle13d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga21d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199221d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga21d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box21d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion21d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7221d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7521d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit21d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14921d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7721d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
