Shadowrun: From birth to death and back again

Shadowrun holds a huge part in my heart. I remember sitting in my room watching this one “betatage” of Shadowrun and thinking “One day I’m going to be great at this game”. I didn’t care about MLG or any other league I just loved Shadowrun. Majin (one of the best SR players) does too. He details the history of Shadowrun to educate gamers born and bred on the Modern Warfare’s and sequels of past FPS games.

Shadowrun still has a good online community even though people try to claim otherwise although I doubt they've even played the game in recent years. I still play it from time to time, the competitive and tactical nature of the game provides for a good break from other shooters.

Sucks no DLC was released for it though and that the map editor was canned, even worse was the closure of FASA. :(

A few users were trying to set up dedicated server "farms" for the game, wonder how that went.

Edit: How can the writer forget about FASA Univeristy?!? The turn around the team was able to accomplish as a result in less than two weeks, they definitely deserve props.

"Shadowrun still has a good online community even though people try to claim otherwise although I doubt they've even played the game in recent years" I have read the same sentiment about TF2 on the 360, which is far from the truth. I played, and enjoyed, Shadowrun until TF2 became my favorite FPS pasttime. Glad to see its still kicking

XactGamer5818d ago

I still play Shadowrun 2 or 3 times a week and there are always about 45-80 full 16 player servers going. Those are just the local matchmaking servers that from Windows Live and Xbox Live. If you start counting the servers in regions that don't show do to connection and lag that number could go up to 200-400 worldwide. Shadowrun is a cult hit with great balanced MP. It was the $60 price tag for 3 game modes and 9 maps 3 of which were just smaller versions of the same map that ruined the reviews. Read the reviews and everything else gets high praise. Not bad for a game that came out in 2007 and got bad press for lack of content.

Shadowrun is stil home to a strong community following, there is little effort involved in finding a game, and little wait. The game is easily in the catagory of the most Underrated Title's this gen, offering a highly addictive yet limited package. The games lack of Single Player Campaign was ok, however, if a title is to be Online-Exclusive, it should be shipped with a diverse number of online options for it players and Three very similar online modes wasn't a great decision. It was a HUGE shame that FASA Studies disbanded and a bigger shame that with it the hopes of a sequel where forever shrunk, I still hold hope, the opportunities for future installments are limitless and it would be a great reward for the communities strong dedication to the game and its online...

lucifon5818d ago

Absolutely love Shadowrun, honestly one of my favorite titles this generation. Completely underrated.

olon125818d ago

i remember playing the demo like 3 years ago or 2? i wish i could go back in time and enjoy the child memories

Goldenboy875818d ago

The game sells for $5 bucks at Gamestop. So take the horrible copy of (name game here) and trade it in for one of the best FPS' of all time.

Thanks for the approvals guys!

Yes! But don’t water it down or make it an MP competitive shooter. I’d love a Cyberpunk 2077 level Shadowrun game.

anast661d ago

This would be awesome, but let's see what they can do with Avowed first. I don't think the talent is there anymore to make a deep RPG.

OneLove661d ago

They just made the outer worlds👀

anast660d ago (Edited 660d ago )

Outer Worlds is extremely average.

TheNamelessOne661d ago

What do you mean? They still have the OGs like Josh Sawyer, Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarski as acting design leads on all of their projects. A lot of the veteran talent have remained at the studio.

anast660d ago

The faces can be there, it doesn't mean the talent is. I suppose we'll see.

TheNamelessOne659d ago (Edited 659d ago )

@anast

All the creative leads of classics like NeverwinterNights 2, Kotor 2, New Vegas, then to Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2; and modern games like Pentiment and Outerworlds; all very legitimate, deep RPGs; them being there, doing as they always have, means we need to question whether the "talent" is there to make deep RPGs. Definitely makes sense, as long as you don't think about it.

Shadowrun would be a nice game to get the series going again.

ShadowRun - An Xbox 360 Classic Left to Rot

ShadowRun arrived in 2007 and is still played by a core audience on modern consoles and PC today, despite a bungled launch.

coolbeans890d ago

Played it a few months back. Not a stellar mp game at its time, but still genuine & janky fun.

Sciurus_vulgaris890d ago

I have never played Shadowrun. However, the universe of Shadowrun seems like a good setting for various game genres. The franchise combines traditional fantasy tropes with cyberpunk science fiction.

Rebel_Scum890d ago

Yeah since the megadrive game I’ve always thought how cool the setting and premise is but the game never really delivers on gameplay.

ocelot07890d ago (Edited 890d ago )

Really enjoyed this back on 360. Was one of the first pc games I played as well. Nice to see it's still online I'm going to have to see about getting a copy on pc again.

Edit: is this backward compatible with series X?

Gcayton1889d ago

Fun game... just not Shadowrun.

porkChop889d ago

The Shadowrun RPGs from Harebrained Schemes were great, but that IP is just begging for a massive, Cyberpunk 2077-style game. Open world action RPG epic with a healthy dose of immersive sim goodness.

shinoff2183887d ago

That could turn out really good for real.

The 7 Best Xbox 360 Games - Console Exclusives Win the Day

The Xbox 360 was a fantastic console in its day with some truly classic titles, but what are the seven best games for the console?

DrDoomer917d ago

I'm pretty used to these lists being bad, but this one is particularly s#ite.

raWfodog917d ago

I think Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon should have been added to the list.

BrainSyphoned917d ago

I'll go with,
Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Culdcept Saga, Shadow Complex, Ace Combat 6 with the flight stick,A Kingdom for Keflings, A World of Keflings.
Bonus Kinect Games: Happy Action Theater and Sesame Street.
*Skyrim was so bad on PS3 that it almost deserves to be #1*

Husker42c917d ago

I really loved Shadow Complex.

P_Bomb916d ago

Ah yes, Shadow Complex! Good indies back in the day. Summer of Arcade. I enjoyed Trials Evolution as well.

ChasterMies917d ago (Edited 917d ago )

Was this made by a.i.? No human being would put Shadowrun, Fable III, and Splinter Cell: Conviction into a list of the 7 best Xbox 360 games.

Abnor_Mal917d ago (Edited 917d ago )

Would love to play Ace Combat6 on PlayStation, but Xbox decided to buy exclusivity and keep it off a competing platform.

The only mainline game I never played except for one level at a friends place. Game sold less than any other in the series if I remember correctly.

darthv72916d ago

360 had Namco hitters AC6 and RR6... both quality titles. You should at least bust out the 360 for AC6 if you can score the flight stick. Its great.

Hofstaderman917d ago

When the current gen XBOX offering is so lacking people need to refer to games released two generations back....

Profchaos916d ago (Edited 916d ago )

It's a nostalgia peice same reason we get thousands of YouTube videos on sega genisis. Something people have fond memories for but the era is long gone.

It's xboxs golden year imo it was their genisis years the time where they stuck it to the market leaders Sony.

BehindTheRows916d ago

They stuck nothing. Sony screwed themselves giving Xbox an opening. They would have gotten the usual smack down if the PS3 had launched at $399 and was easier to develop for.
