Playstation Plus: nice try, Sony

Tuesday the 29th was, like every Tuesday, Playstation Network Store update day. But if you’ve been reading a lot of gaming news lately, you know what else the date means: the debut of paid Playstation Network service.

you sure as hell wont get this much free stuff out of microsofts $50 charge...

I have it and im a happy camper for the next 15 months;)

GWAVE5824d ago (Edited 5824d ago )

He says "there isn’t anything resembling a killer app for the launch of Playstation Plus." Soooo, was there an Xbox Live Gold "killer app" exclusive to XBL Gold subscribers?

These articles are very ignorant. Do you keep your Netflix DVDs once you stop paying? Heck, do you get to play basic online multiplayer when you stop paying for Xbox Live? I think some crybaby journalists are mad that PSN+ offers something tremendous that XBox Live does not.

PSN+ is basically a discount service. It allows gamers to save money. The ONLY thing you do not keep are the completely free games. You keep any free DLC, any demos, and any discounted games you bought. There are discount cards for almost every store in America. You simply weigh the cost: if I get "x" discount, I need to spend "y" to make it worth it.

C'mon...renting a game for 12 months for only $50 is a steal. Most people own their $60 games for only a month before they trade it in to Gamestop.

Anon19745824d ago

"Presumably, each week or each month, they will add new freebies for Playstation Plus subscribers. There is no certainty."

Oh for the love of god. Where do they get these guys?
If you don't want the extra content, no one is holding a gun to your head. For people like me, who liked Qore and were planning on renewing it anyway, who are suckers for themes, who play the beta's, who download games and love the content on the playstation store - $50 a year is easily worth it.

You want to criticize something, how about having to pay $50 a year to play 100% of the games you purchased? Online play should be standard at this point, not some subscription service that you need to pay extra for. When you need to pay extra to play a game you purchased 100% as the developer intended, there's something wrong.

I look forward to this guy's follow-up blog on the value of XBL Gold. I'm not holding my breath, though.

@lachance

You obviously do.

sikbeta5824d ago (Edited 5824d ago )

Guys, the only "killer-app" in xbl, is that let you play On-line, other than that, oh, XGC -_-

This is something I'm saying since the Day Sony announce PS+, some dudes don't get the point of it, PS+ is not a Feature, it's a Service, the people that can't get that, can't see any "appeal" in it, so basically they'd see more "appeal" if Sony take out Something FREE, add to PS+ and make you pay for it...

raztad5824d ago (Edited 5824d ago )

LOL @La chance

And how are you supposed to "see" PSN+ flooping? Sony is sending you monthly reports of registered users/revenue?

La chance hate for everything Sony is mental.

OT: PSN+ is frankly an atractive service the offer you a good value for your $50. It is just starting, and will be more attractive when beta access of new games start to roll out.

dabri55824d ago

He says "there isn’t anything resembling a killer app for the launch of Playstation Plus." Soooo, was there an Xbox Live Gold "killer app" exclusive to XBL Gold subscribers?

-Halo 2 online

ravinash5824d ago

I love the fact that this "service" allows you to update all your games while your not playing it.
The free games rentals, betas themes and avatars etc all add up to good value.
Plus the discounts, you will make the make back in no time.
There are things like the Killzone maps which I was waiting for the price to come down, but if the service is good enough and it gives me the discount then hell I might as well get that now.

Marquis_de_Sade5823d ago

You mean you don't get to keep the "completely free" games that you pay for with Playstation +?

Garnett5823d ago

Xbox LIVE doesnt have just one killer app, Xbox live itself is a killer app.

PSN Plus is the same thing as PSN which is average, just with extra games, i see no reason paying for either.

Proxy5823d ago (Edited 5823d ago )

Some people are too easily manipulated.

Me: *takes friends watch*
Me: "Hey friend, want to buy this watch?"
Friend: "Of course, what a great deal!"

MS: *takes away free online multiplayer which had been free forever until they came along*
MS: "Hey consumers, want to buy this online gameplay?"
Consumers: "Of course, what a great deal!"

bviperz5823d ago

Money well spent with PSN+

NeutralGamer5823d ago

Alot people say:

"Compared to XBL you get free games"

Well at XBL Gold I get 50 % off from selected games every week...
Stack all my discounts together and it can count as "free" games....

EvilBlackCat5823d ago (Edited 5823d ago )

"C'mon...renting a game for 12 months for only $50 is a steal. Most people own their $60 games for only a month before they trade it in to Gamestop."

Renting a game for just $50 bucks is cool?

WHO DA FUCK wanna rent a game that is going to make you spend $50 bucks on it?

If yo spend 12 month renting that shit then that mean you like it... Why not find another $10 bucks and buy it?

If you wanna rent a game for $50 WHY NOT BUY THE GAME on Gamestop and then trade it and receive $20? all you do is lose $40 instead of $50. IN ONE YEAR.

WHO DA FUCK IN HIS RIGHT MIND IS GOING TO SPEND $50 RENTING A GAME?

ONCE YOU SPEND 2 DAYS WITH A GAME YOU RENT IT YOU KNOW IF YOU LIKE IT OR NOT

IF YOU LIKE IT BUY IT YOU DAMN MORON!

JUST EPIC!!!!

THIS SHIT IS HILARIOUS!!!!! LOLx100

TRUE SONY PS DOES EVERYTHING

BURN YOUR BRAIN CELLS!

hatchimatchi5823d ago

@evilblackcat

you are an absolute idiot.

PS+ doesn't give you 1 game for the whole year. By the time my 15 month subscription is over, i'll probably have access to over 40 full games available to download.

What store lets you rent 40 games for only $50 a year?

the sad part is...all of these articles make the content seem as though its lacking or weak and that it is a representation of PSN and the Store itself...the ridiculous part is that the writer is somehow offended by the fact that they would lose their FREE GAMES....lets repeat that FREE GAMES...he will be putting his foot in his mouth in the coming months, especially when the holiday season rolls around

skyfire22615824d ago

So what your saying is by PAYING for a subscription i'm getting something for FREE? Wow i never knew that is how it worked. Thank you

Elwenil5824d ago (Edited 5824d ago )

Look at it this way, I am paying $4.17 a month to get access to a few free games, trials, betas, themes, discounts and other goodies that are easily 10 times that in value. It's great service for those who are interested in it, and judging by the number of gold D-pad icons that had popped up on my friend's list, it seems to be very popular.

Rainstorm815824d ago (Edited 5824d ago )

yea i got about 60 friends on PSN and a fourth has PS+ and it hasnt been 1 week yet.

People will quickly see the value in PS+ reguardless of all these negative articles.

By next month my subcription will be paid back to me in content.

@skyfire
so instead we should pay a subscription and get the ability to play games online which happens to be free everywhere else (PC,PS3,Wii) except MMOs?

Hmmm pay and get free stuff or pay for stuff that should be free? hmm tough choice

MysticStrummer5823d ago

@skyfire2261 - If the value of what you get in return is greater than the subscription rate, then yes you are getting something for free. Pretty basic math, really.

i have it and im happier with it than with my XBL subscription, with XBL i feel like i need to play games online to justify my subscription.

with PS+ i could never turn on my PS3 but when i do a whole slew of goodies await me just for being a member.

As someone said on here the other day, " XBL is feature based and PS+ is content based" simple as that

dabri55824d ago

None of the free stuff (how is it free if you pay for it) that you get access to, you get to keep. As soon as you stop paying for the service, you lose access to all the games/themes/ etc.

PSN is a good service. There just isn't any need for PSN +. Not with what is being offered with it now.

Pedobear Rocks5823d ago

and how DARE they....

I know when I pay my Netflix subscription I get to keep all my discs forever at no extra cost.

TEFL0N_D0N_815824d ago

Why do people automatically bring up XBL Gold as an alternate comparison? How about the free PSN network? It's still free right?

Some here like to represent the voice that $50 a year is a lot to them. I'm here to represent the voice that $50 a year ain't shit if the service is good. If PS3 was my only console (yes I have both), and PSN was $50 a year, I'd pay for that too.

dragon825823d ago

I am going to have to group myself in with you. I have a Gamefly and Netflix subscription and own all consoles and handhelds on the market along with a gaming PC. While I will say that as a whole I don't get my money worth out of LIVE because i have only played my 360 online a handful of times, I have no problem payeing for it. I also jumped at the chance to get PS+. I can look past all the fanboy BS and see the true potential and value of it. I can also assure you that if Nintendo offered a similar service I would be more than happy to give them my money too.

Christopher5823d ago

I get the author's view, but I think it's not one of the 'core' perspective.

***Well gee whiz, it’s about time; I hated having to click ‘OK’ in order install video game patches. It just seemed like a waste of valuable time. And who among us hasn’t been chomping at the bit for more opportunties to throw their cash down?***

Auto-updates and downloading is one of the most requested features on Blog Share.

***Playstation Plus discounts which apply to only a handful of games at a timeare going to save the average subscriber a couple of dollars every few weeks, at best.***

Actually, It's close to $50 savings for the first month with free/reduced price items. The Free DLC that's available alone runs about $20. Throw in the free WipEout HD and that's $40.

***Unfortunately there’s fine print. A catch. An enormous one—if at any point you let your subscription lapse, you lose all of the stuff you previously got for free.***

People are fascinated with this one item. What they fail to realize is that you pay once a year to save hundreds of dollars on games. You're buying into the ridiculous savings. Otherwise, your option is to pay full price for just a few of the items with your $50. There has to be a downside to saving hundreds of dollars a year on game content, and it is that you have to keep buying each year of game content to maintain access.

But, most importantly, it doesn't affect your ability to just buy games you want individually and have them available any time you want.

***Do you really think the prospect of saving $2.50 on a download of Mortal Kombat II or a dollar off Fat Princess DLC is going to sell subscriptions? ***

Well, if you want to only recognize those items. The author already posted all the free items you can get with this which totals up to $32 as it is, yet when he makes the argument of keeping up a $50/year subscription he only talks about the least expensive items available?

Don't try and exaggerate the issue by only looking at a tree instead of the forest.

====

As I said, I understand the author's concerns as well as the concerns of others. But, this is for those who will continue to download the free games, use them, and keep up their $50/year subscription to gain new games and play their old ones. This is for people who are okay with buying into a system that will save them hundreds of dollars on games selected by Sony.

This is not for people who only want to buy what they want and don't see gaining anything else as a bonus.

Mr Marbles5823d ago

is the only place I see idiots defending PSN+ Its an absolute joke and a rip off. I think what I find most offensive about is you only get to keep your games if you keep your subscription active, pure bogus.

Ravage275823d ago (Edited 5823d ago )

i didn't get it because i already own both Wipeout HD and inFamous, but there's more than enough content to justify the pricetag.

It works like a RENTAL service, since you know...people nowadays just love trading in single player games after one playthrough anyway. In addition to game rental, you get PSN discounts, premium themes, avatars, automatic patch updates, first priority for new betas etc...

That's what you are paying for. Oh but you know what's the best part of it? Online gaming on the PS3 remains completely free. (lol at the retards paying for xbox live). No one is pointing a gun at you to subscribe to PSN+ and it's 100% possible to enjoy online gaming without it...but i guess that's too much common sense for idiots like you to comprehend

Gue15823d ago (Edited 5823d ago )

Wipeuot HD price $20 - 50 = $30

$20 justified only in the first month and there are 12 more left and to that add the free themes, avatars, PS1 classics and discounted DLC... And all of this optional +free online play. And I say free cus the $50 are more than justified!

vs

XBL
obligatory $50 for 12 months of online play (hidden cost) and no free content.

50 articles saying its not worth it tells me people are worried PS has finally got a service that will make sony so much money they can finally pump it back into the console and finish MS off. They are hating this service because its so good. They are just finding flaws.. Let them pick holes in this great service but I sold my LBP for £12 and got £4 off buying vouchers from a website so I got the service in reality for £24. The games I got with it alone in the first month including expansions nearly cover that. SoI am loving it. £24?? Bargain!

wsoutlaw875823d ago

"Well gee whiz, it’s about time; I hated having to click ‘OK’ in order install video game patches. It just seemed like a waste of valuable time. And who among us hasn’t been chomping at the bit for more opportunties to throw their cash down"
Its not like the auto updates just download them when you turn it on and you just skip pussing "ok". you set a time, like when you are asleep every morning at 4 am and it turns on, downloads everything, and turns off. I really like that

irepbtown5823d ago

Whatever we have free now will stay the same, just PSN+ will have more features.

pimpmaster5823d ago

i thought ps+ would be cool , but when u think about it , its pretty dumb value. playing a game for an hour and cross game chat. some free psn games , i dont see whats the point of getting it.

Shepherd 2145823d ago (Edited 5823d ago )

Xbox Live Gold members have access to discounted and half price games every single week(Deals of the Week as XBL calls them), and every couple months they will have bundle deals special miscellaneous deals too. Sometimes, not often though, they will have a deal that if you buy 5 games you get 800 MS points, or if you buy 3 arcade titles you get another half off.

Gold members also can get demos earlier than anyone else, and Xbox Live(Gold or Silver) in general offers complete cross-game chat no matter what you are doing. Id say that all of that justifies the $50 a year for me. Especially that whole "cross-game chat no matter what your doing" part. I have LOTS of friends ya know. PSN still doesnt offer that.

Fanboys will try to spin the facts to their advantage and say that "playing online is the ONLY thing you pay $50 a year for with Xbox Live", but real users of the service know better.

Colonel-Killzone5824d ago (Edited 5824d ago )

Idiots must not know why the PS+ surpass live. It makes live look like crap because of all the free content you get its ridiculous. People pay for live because they want to play online. Live features are nice but playing online is the main reason when will fanboys and trolls learn this ?

Playstation Plus is all about content. Live is about you playing online. Sony made the PSN look way more attractive to some consumers. It also makes live look obsolete. You can play online for free and also if you want upgrade to receive free games and also other content when you subscribe plus you get discounts. I won't even go into it at all.

Regardless there is tons of free content. You may not like it but their are other people out there who would love the content. I seen more then half my friendlist now with Playstation Plus its crazy.

Thats probably Xbox Live weakest points now. I never heard of anyone paying for live for features other then playing online. Then again you probably have those select few individuals out there so I won't doubt the possibility.

Simple as this. Right now the PSN in my opinion has now surpass live. All the content you get when you subscribe is insane. On top of that the most important thing is you don't have to pay Sony to play online still while on Live you have no choice. Sony wins because I have a choice Xbox live I don't have that freedom.

Johnny Rotten5824d ago (Edited 5824d ago )

The Plus service doesn't really interest me but I can't deny that you are getting some good deals and perks that over in time can justify the cost(assuming they keep doing what their doing).

Then again I always wanted to pick up those 2 TIK games, so the discount and the free DLC on those would bring me up to about a third of what the Plus service costs in total. So I guess it's not bad if you plan on buying stuff from the store and your willing to wait for it to be discounted.

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade).
