Sony Trashes Paper Toss, Developer Responds

STP: An STP reader recently alerted us to a new online attack ad from Sony, trashing a made-up game called "Wastebasket" that sounds exactly like the popular Paper Toss games from Backflip Studios.

Sony calls the game a "waste of time and money" even though the original game is FREE. Marcus Rivers says that it should be a crime to "charge" for a fake version of a real game that you could play for free and ends up showing a baseball game on PSP, irony?

Good to see some one setting the kid straight. The real blame lies on whoever wrote this ad, though that's nothing when it comes to PSP ads. Pussy Willows, anyone? >.<

callahan095793d ago

Wow. That was a horrible ad. So much anger over nothing. That's the problem with this Marcus Rivers character. He just comes off as an asshole. Kevin Butler is arrogant in a funny way, but this Marcus isn't as well-developed, he's just a little snot. What the hell is the point of making fun of a free game with such vitriol? Sony should just admit that they took a wrong turn when they created this character. Kevin Butler = win, Marcus Rivers = fail.

BakedGoods5793d ago (Edited 5793d ago )

His over-the-top 12-year-old gangsta humor is funny.

@Lionhead:

Here at N4G we talk about games, sorry if that bothers you. Milo's that way --->

Lionhead5793d ago

Yawn more flamebait from N4PS3G

Developer doesn't even care.

Raf1k15793d ago (Edited 5793d ago )

I don't think it was Sony that created the character but the ad company behind the commercial. The Kevin Butler ads have done wonders for Sony's PS3 so it's no surprise they'd ask them to do the same for the PSP.

It's a shame Marcus isn't that great of a character but I think the way the actor plays the character also has something to do with it. Either way I think Sony should be more careful when approving ads. I'm assuming Sony gets to check out each ad before it's created.

edit: BTW it seems HHG may have been part of the inspiration behind this ad.

Cryptech5793d ago

I love how butt-hurt people get over a stupid ad that mentions a stupid game in a funny way. People always take shit so serious.

HDgamer5793d ago

Don't see how's he's a gangster because he talks a certain way you ignorant racist.

sikbeta5793d ago

Sorry callahan09, but Sony didn't invented Marcus Rivers, they Pay to someone to make their ads, it's the same company that bring KB, MR is another character made by this team to promote the PSP, Sony don't make the scripts, also the guy is Great, is not Awesome like KB, but he does his job Right and For God Sake, Look at the Guy Who Post this Crapticle, N4PS3G, enough said...

JoySticksFTW5793d ago

I love this new marketing campaign from Sony

It's like Nintendo vs Sony all over again, when Sony was calling out Mario in front of Nintendo's building, calling him Plumber-boy and stuff

But this time it's Sony vs the World, which is what it's really been like since Sony first launched. It's only been the last year or two that media members have come around and try to be fair about things.

I like seeing Sony aggressive again.

Lich1205793d ago

People are probably upset because Sony (or the ad company) are attacking a game made by likely one person. Someone who is no threat to sony. Attacking the iphone is one thing, but I can see how people would get upset by attacking certain independent developers.

Also, funny choice of game to justify, baseball, another thing we can all do for free.

callahan095793d ago

I understand that it's really an ad agency that creates this characters, but Sony obviously gives the green-light. It's Sony's character. That ad agency can't use Marcus Rivers or Kevin Butler for any of their other clients. Those are Sony's characters, and in my opinion, Sony is taking a wrong turn with Marcus Rivers. I don't know how you can do it so right with Kevin Butler and get it so wrong with Marcus Rivers, but that's what they've done in my opinion. I thought the first 2 ads with Marcus were OK, but they've been getting worse.

The criticism in this ad doesn't even make sense. What's the point in bringing up a game that's free to play, insinuating that it's a waste of money to play it because you might as well just do it in real life (forgetting that it's free to play the video game version), and then suggesting that you instead play a video game that DOES cost money to play but could also be played in real life... I just got a sour taste in my mouth from this commercial.

Attacking little indie games is in poor taste, especially games that you can play for free. Kevin Butler does a lot of attacking of his own, but it's always more comical and good-natured ribbing than just out-and-out trashing and he attacks things that are a real competitor for Sony, where this ad is attacking something that to me doesn't deserve to get attacked because it's not even a real competitor for the PSP. Does any of this make sense? I just don't like the ad. So sue me.

Conloles5793d ago

That marcus guy sucks, but hey whats it matter ill get 100 disagrees anyway because he's part of Sony and everything Sony does is perfect /s

"I would like to point out that Paper Toss is a free game on the iPhone and not a paid application as referenced in the video." Ad-free and premium versions of Paper Toss for the iPhone and iPad do cost between one and three dollars.

Our opinion is that Sony's argument doesn't hold much water. As Farrior pointed out, the original Paper Toss is an extremely popular example of a free game that makes its money off of in-game advertising. This is a business model which doesn't even exist yet on the PSP."

LOLx100

Sony got powned by a low budget dev

That is the kind of arrogance tha i hate from Sony... mmm now we know from where ps3 loyalists get it.

Lex Luthor5793d ago

Sony also had crappy adverts.

pixelsword5793d ago (Edited 5793d ago )

The ad was't too bad, it's actually right: throwing waste paper is something almost anyone can do anywhere. Playing in the Major Leagues isn't merely "baseball" it's playing in the Majors; even if you were to say it's merely baseball, see how easy it is to get a game going (with refs and in a legal field) versus a trash can and a balled-up piece of paper.

I'm not even going into the instant replays and mascots. :D

i really don't like these marcus adverts.
they should just keep doing the kevin butler ones

sikbeta5793d ago (Edited 5793d ago )

They keep doing KB ads, This guy is promoting the PSP, the 2 ad campaigns come from the Same Company, just read:

Quote from the "Article" that Totally goes against of what the title is trying to assume

"Julian Farrior, CEO and Founder of Backflip Studios, wants to be clear that he's not at all upset with Sony for being singled out. "I have to say, this is a pretty funny ad and in general I really like the campaign," Farrior said"

This "article" was done to get hits by making you believe the Devs were mad at Sony for the things that were said in the Ad

Shang-Long5793d ago

looks like someone was smart and read the article

pixelsword5793d ago

You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance!

Nike5793d ago

"This 'article' was done to get hits by making you believe the Devs were mad at Sony for the things that were said in the ad"

They're not upset, but then, where in the post does it say they were upset in the first place? Even the headline says "Developer Responds" and not "Dev Fumes".

And quite frankly, Sony DID trash the game which - as accurately pointed out by the developer of Paper Toss - doesn't really matter, because they like the ads, and both devs are going for different markets in their respective portable segments anyway.

Trashing the game I have no prob with - devs do it all the time. But when you start making up lies in your campaign, you're asking for trouble, whether your name is Kevin Butler, Kaz Hirai, Aaron Greenberg, George Bush, etc.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8513d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele13d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk12d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10113d ago (Edited 13d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit12d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg12d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10112d ago (Edited 12d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14913d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle26d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker26d ago (Edited 26d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit26d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog26d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_26d ago (Edited 26d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog26d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad26d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_26d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage26d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda26d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
