LucasArts: Devs will overcome console MMO barrier

MMOs will eventually see some success on home consoles, believes LucasArts and Star Wars: The Old Republic senior producer Jake Neri.

At E3 earlier this month, we quizzed the LucasArts man for his thoughts on the future of the genre on home console platforms.

"I'm sure at some point people will figure it out," said Neri. "I think that the complexity of what you need, the depth that you need to compel a player to stay in your game for months and months and years and years is a challenge that's attributed to the console. I see games like Modern Warfare or Force Unleashed 2, or something like that - those games take advantage of what those consoles do well. I can't predict the future, but I'm sure somebody will do it someday. We know the depth required to build this game on PC is staggering, so we'll see."

Console MMO barrier? The only barrier thats there are the ones that they put up. The ps3 has been having keyboard and mouse support since 2006. We are already gonna get The Agency, DC Universe, and Free Realms. We already have 256 player FPS games with no lag with MAG. The only thing that is getting held up is the speed at which it takes a AA third party dev to even try an MMO on consoles. But what do I know? Im just a gamer.

Agreed.
Even Home should be enough proof that an mmo could work just fine on the ps3, or indeed any other console.
But this is just another case of devs underestermating the console audience, not the consoles themselves.

an mmo will work with anything as long as its made with that system in mindor you change the controls to fit the controller

CobraKai5798d ago

And this is one MMO I would actually play. Here's hoping they do put it on the PS3, but in the mean time I'll be waiting for DC universe.

I would like an MMO I can use the controller with efficiently though. If somebody could make something that used console like regular gameplay but combined it in an online world i would so go for it. borderland did that a bit

EvilBlackCat5799d ago

A GREAT MMO with a great lower fee that can keep you hooked to it in a console will automatically kill other games

Sigh............... One day...................One day

ExposingLames5799d ago

i heard they were actually letting Slant Six Games (literally the worst developer ever...see SOCOM: Confrontation) to do this game....what a joke....i am assuming they fired them and got a new dev?

washingmachine5799d ago

you mean a real full on mmo like wow with all them crazy buttons needed or do they mean xbox cause ps3 gots like 4 mmos coming so far i know of. anyway, who said a console mmo needed only the controller, people buying a console mmo should know that they need a keyboard etc if such a thing was gonna happen, why not just use the chatpads of xbox and ps3,dunno

eh…Gilbert, Purcell Schaffer were the trail blazers in that crew. David, while he did do some stuff once, like a real long ass time ago is more like b-list personality that specializes in reminiscing and signing ops at a convention.

I loved this game and have played since launch but don't let this article fool you, this game is a step above life support. While they are still technically updating the game, the updates are few and far between and there is a significant lack of quality control, so many little bugs that have been present for years.

TheColbertinator1143d ago

The updates felt flimsy to me also. Stopped playing in 2021.

Andrew3361143d ago

This game got a huge update last year didn't it with more content?

PapaBop1143d ago

They promoted it as an expansion yet offered like 3-4 hours of content. The game is amazing and easily one of the best Star Wars games ever made but content drops are so few and far between.
