Why Milo Will Live On As Kinect Tech Engine

NowGamer investigates the recent announcement that Lionhead's Kinect project Milo will not see the light of day. However Peter Molyneux has suggested we will see a better version of Milo in July, suggesting Milo is the underlying tech, rather than a game.

But we haven't actually seen the "revolutionary tech" in action yet. Some of the press saw a version behind closed doors, but revealed there was a lot of smoke and mirrors behind it all.

MNicholas5777d ago

leads to poor judgement.

They tried passing that Milo stuff off as real only to be caught by the press.

Since there's no actual "tech" behind Milo (it was found to be human operated), just what aspect of the "demo" will live on?

fastrez5777d ago

The ideals behind it?...I'm reserving judgement for the July demo.

God Im really starting to hate these /insertdifferentname gamer.com flame bait sites

SOAD5777d ago

The AI in Milo has already been surpassed by Cleverbot and Wolfram Alpha. Google both of those. I've had long conversations with Cleverbot. Eventually, the convos break down when Cleverbot responds nonsensically, but it's creepy how convincing an algorithm is at pretending to be a human.

Godmars2905777d ago (Edited 5777d ago )

which of those are going to be in a 360 game using Kenect? Which are going to be in a game period?

It also says something that at no point did Milo prove itself to be an AI program. Literally has a man behind the curtain.

SOAD5777d ago

The point is that the technology exists. Microsoft doesn't have to fake it anymore, because the algorithms exist.

And you know what? There's no such thing as true AI. So, if anyone here was actually expecting Microsoft to pull it off, then I feel sorry for them.

Mc Fadge5777d ago (Edited 5777d ago )

Well, if (big word) Milo's presentation we saw at E3 was real, it is leaps and bounds ahead of Cleverbot.

1: It responded instantly, Cleverbot can take his sweet time.

2: It featured flawless speech recognition, as well as emotional recognition.

3: It replicated human emotion based on its response.

Like I said, IF the demonstration was real, Cleverbot is left in the dust. However, there is a clear evidence the video was faked.

Godmars2905777d ago (Edited 5777d ago )

but it hasn't been put on a console or in a game.

And the only reason people were expecting MS to pull off a true AI character in a game, was that they were trying to present such a thing. We've all had to deal with people believing just that this past year, defending it to insulting levels, because they take what MS says as gospel.

Much like they seem to be doing with being able to sit while using Kenect. Ignoring that the tech is not yet ready for market, and yet presenting it as if it is.

MNicholas5777d ago

It was a faked demonstration.

The only reason why anyone thought that there was AI in Milo was because Microsoft faked it.

Then they got caught by the press.

Obama5777d ago

I tried Cleverbot a while ago. When I asked do you know anything about final fantasy. She got confused and couldn't give me an answer.

"Some of the press saw a version behind closed doors, but revealed there was a lot of smoke and mirrors behind it all. "

Links from the press saying this would be a nice read. Please send links

Shane Shatterfield:

"All I’m going to say about Milo is that its not legit. There were a lot of smoke and mirrors going on there, not the case with the ball demo [Ricochet] and the other stuff but with Milo there was definitely a little bit of deception going on."

"They said, 'do exactly what we did in the press conference and you'll be cool'"

Ok thanks for the link. ouch

MNicholas5777d ago (Edited 5777d ago )

Milo couldn't possibly live on as "tech" when there's clearly no "tech" behind it.

Persistantthug5777d ago

That's just for the record.

Milo isn't dead and buried just yet they are still working on it and it will be displayed next month, July 13th at TEDGlobal in the UK.

Also Milo tech has already been used for kinectimals.

fastrez5777d ago

The article says all of that...

skyward5777d ago

...if you read the piece! ;)

Inside_out5777d ago

Peter Molyneux was very specific when they ask him about Milo. It does exist, it was playable at E3 to a select few and I think we will here more about it in the coming months leading up till the November launch of Kinect.

BTW...Mass Effect would be incredible if Kinect becomes the mind of the computer like in 2001 space odyssey...Hal, what are you doing. There could be many potential apps for it...wait and see, the thing is in it's infancy.

Peter Molyneux says Masters of Albion will make up for decades of ‘overpromising on things’

The Fable, Populous, Dungeon Keeper, Black & White and Curiosity creator says this will be his last game…

I hope it's great but won't hold my breath. From what I've seen i expect a pile of ugly, Dragon Age Veilguard-like garbage. I hope they prove me wrong.

DarXyde176d ago

Peter Molyneux is bloody hilarious. Imagine...

Self aware enough to know he's got a history of over promising... ONLY TO OVER PROMISE BY SAYING MASTERS OF ALBION WILL MAKE UP FOR DECADES OF OVER PROMISING

What?! 🤯😂

peppeaccardo176d ago

This dude should take over Phil Spencer's job ... nobody at MS would note the difference moving forward.

CrimsonWing69176d ago

Isn’t that what you’re literally doing here?

ShwaaMan175d ago

Did he just pull a Peter Molyneux again…?

Peter Molyneux recalls how Project Milo, the Kinect game with revolutionary promise, died a death

Vapourware can end up being the stuff of legend, like Rockstar's Agent, Star Wars 1313, or StarCraft: Ghost. Without ever seeing the light of day, these games never risked the possibility of being played and forgotten, and instead live on forever as the subjects of lengthy YouTube essays.

Still, Molyneux's most notable lost game (or tech demo, depending on who you asked at the time) was arguably Project Milo.

I can see the potential of the kinect hardware... its rather impressive tech, but it was just not meant to be for gaming. If anything, MS had a huge missed opportunity to have used it for the AR/VR projects.

S2Killinit334d ago

Missed opportunity? They lied. It was the biggest lie in gaming history.

merlox333d ago

You can use the Kinect as an SLS camera for paranormal investigations. So it wasn’t a complete failure.

Remember Star Wars Kinect announcement? Biggest laughable acting seen

It was built on lies Peter...you know this.

isarai334d ago

Bro that thing NEVER existed, what we got was a concept video

Knushwood Butt334d ago

"Unfortunately, as we were developing Milo, so the Kinect device was being developed. And they realised that the device that Alex Kipman first showed off would cost $5,000 for consumers to buy.

"So they cost-reduced that device down to such a point, where the field-of-view...I think it was a minuscule field-of-view. In other words, it could only just see what's straight in front of you."

Hmm, exactly what tech was in it, that was cut, affected the development? It was only ever interpreting visual and audio inputs right? The xbox was processing those inputs.

Nor do I see how the field of view thing is relevant to the discussion.

isarai334d ago

Exactly! Tf kinda BS statement was that? i don't really see how fov is relevant at all, since when do you move all around a room while talking/interacting to someone?

Amplitude333d ago (Edited 333d ago )

This is entirely untrue. There was never a 5000 dollar Kinect prototype that could somehow use a wider field of view to scan and import generated in-game items and advance AI by over a decade. Anybody that fell for this was a stupid moron child, myself included. Anybody that falls for this lie now is a stupid moron child who doesn't realize that these people *only* know how to lie.

Is It Time To Trust Peter Molyneux Again?

Masters of Albion is already promising, but can we trust Peter Molyneux to not let us down again?

I came here to say that I don't want to hear any grand standing or over promises, and I was not left disappointed when I read: "Molyneux has “kept very quiet” about the project as he wanted to “let the game speak for itself”.

Perfect.

Cacabunga608d ago

Milo and Kate 😆
Stellar lie

DivineHand125608d ago

Project Milo could not have been released even if it existed. Why would a grown man want to simulate talking to young kids?

Profchaos609d ago

No he hasn't done anything to earn it if he actually delivers a fun competent game that's different

DiRtY608d ago

Come on, you can hate him for overpromising, but he made some fun games.
Fable I and II were awesome, as was theme park or Dungeon Keeper.

OldDuffer608d ago

Unfortunately its the haters who will always set the agenda on any such discussion. Peter is a visionary who delivered some exceptional games and invented genres. I consider myself blessed to have worked at Bullfrog and seen such creativity up close. The fact he over promissed on several projects later in his career is hardly an issue limited to just him, and certainly does not undo the huge legacy he has.
I was impressed by the showing at the event, and Im pleased to see he's learnt to shutup and just deliver a game. Maybe one two people can let go of the hate if he delivers on this project, but I doubt it - people love to hate.

CrimsonIdol607d ago

Amen. I respect Peter as a dreamer of interesting and grand ideas. Those who remember the golden years of Bullfrog knows how interesting their games were (and still remain) and the glorious feel of manipulating all the little simulation mechanics. If you understand many of his promises were "wouldn't it be cool if" hypotheticals that were strived for but ultimately not achieved (ie the realities of game dev) it makes far more sense than him being deliberately misleading.

Psychonaut85609d ago

No. Too many other developers who HAVEN’T scammed people and lied to our face for two decades. Don’t have time to listen to this dude anymore. If it’s good, good for those people that like that type of game. I still won’t ever trust him.

Plague-Doctor27609d ago

One of the dumbest questions I've ever heard. Guy hasn't told the truth in over 20 years

DodoDojo608d ago

Exactly, the dude likes to suck his own D and talk everything up.

Psychonaut85605d ago

I’m curious who the dislikes are on our comments. Either people old enough to have some deeeeeeep love for Black and White and Populous, or young enough to not know what a massive huckster Molyneux is. He’s the M.Night Shyamalan of game directors. Did a couple good things early on and somehow has managed to ride that for decades.
