Please EA, don't start a trend

Will EA's Online Pass System influence other game developers to follow a similar practice that expands to other genres?

as long as it doesn't start expanding into total console drm or code entries for the single player portion, i honestly couldn't care less. i don't need to play games online nor do alot of other people.

BeaArthur5724d ago (Edited 5724d ago )

Well that's the problem, that's exactly where it will lead. You better believe that every publisher on the planet is watching to see how this will play out.

GWAVE5724d ago (Edited 5724d ago )

EA has done this before, in a way. They've required you to have an "EA profile" to use many of their games. I saw this new "Online Pass" thingie in my copy of Skate 3, but I'm pretty sure even the first Skate required you to have an online EA id.

Honestly, I could care less as long as it doesn't interfere with playing offline, single-player games. Online games only cater to a certain audience, not all of the gaming industry.

Rapture135724d ago

Yeah, even though multiplayer gaming is a big deal these days, there are still a vast number of people who really don't care for MP. I just hope this does not start a domino effect that trickles down to used games stores, because at that point it will affect even offline gamers. lol but like I said in the article though, I may just be overanalyzing the entire situation.

SOAD5724d ago

There is no vast number of people who only play single player.

Multiplayer has become a very important aspect to gaming.

Case in point, Mass Effect 2. It is one of the highest rated games of this gen and yet has sold only 1.6 million copies.

Assassin's Creed is one of the exceptions, having sold 8 million copies while AC2 sold 9 million. But AC: Brotherhood now has multiplayer.

The era of single-player only games is ending. Co-op and multiplayer have become a selling point.

ginganinja5724d ago

While i don't disagree that MP is important, it's not at the cost of single player games.
How many people do you think bought games like Red Dead Redemption, Uncharted 2, etc for the multi-player portion ?
I bet you a heck of a lot more bought it primarily for the single player.

And there's not a lack of quality single player games out there.
You mention AC, but you could easily add in Fallout 3, Oblivion, FF XIII, Batman, Infamous, Heavy rain, Bioshock, Dead Space, Bayonetta, Devil may cry, etc. off the top of my head.

SOAD5724d ago (Edited 5724d ago )

A lot of those games you mentioned have or will have sequels with multiplayer modes. And the reason for that is because the publishers are beginning to realize that the majority of this generation's gamers are looking for long-term multiplayer experiences.

Dead Space sold one million copies across three platforms. Thus, Dead Space 2 will have multiplayer.

Bioshock 2 has multiplayer.

Infamous 2 will have either multiplayer or co-op.

Heavy Rain sold one million copies, not a vast number.

Bayonetta didn't sell very well.

Devil May Cry is a multi-gen series so fans of the others purchased DMC4 and accounted for the sales.

Oblivion and Fallout are part of a multi-gen series. They gained popularity in a time when single player campaigns were dominant.

Basically, all the good-selling single player games you mentioned are famous for having good predecessors last gen.

New single-player IPs this gen have had problems selling as well as the multiplayer games.

Exceptions include Assassin's Creed.

Online Pass is overdone DRM, but I think VIP-Code system implemented in Bad Company 2 is an acceptable smart move on EA's part.

Rapture135724d ago

Yeah I also like the approach the EA took with BFBC2. Free DLC to users who bought the game new(which is something that people believe should always be free), and paid DLC for everyone else, which is the norm anyways.

dontrunboi5724d ago

i buy all my games used lol

StickyStickie5724d ago

so do I for the most part. if there is a game i really like tho I will buy it new. but they better not make multiplayer cost money!!!

Reading-RR5724d ago

Personally, I think these guys are going to syphoon all the money they can from our pockets. It is lame but they know they will get away with it.

Rapture135724d ago

I am afraid I have to agree Reading. Though some developers show some integrity, as a whole, the industry has shown that it is willing to make us go broke.

I even bought one of those Tiger Woods course. Just adding fuel to the fire = /

You forgot to add "thank God" at the end of the headline.

tomr29923187d ago

Indeed... Praise the Lord!

V0MIT_M0NSTER3187d ago

So glad that they won't mess with Banjo anymore.

-Foxtrot3186d ago

So you wouldn't want a proper Banjo-Threeie, Jade Empire or Kameo 2...really?

AZRoboto3186d ago

Or Crimson Skies. That was the shiz

FallenAngel19843187d ago

It's a shame we can't get another Banjo-Kazooie game

-Foxtrot3186d ago

Literally one that's called Banjo-Threeie and they start the game with Kazooie waking up in distress telling Banjo of a hardly nightmare while recapping Nuts and Bolts.

PhoenixUp3187d ago

Microsoft never could maintain a longrunning decent 3D platformers series of their own

AZRoboto3186d ago

I don't think "longrunning" is really necessary... Isn't Blinx the only one that got a sequel?

darthv723186d ago

Blinx needs to return if at least to show up Bubsy.

ninsigma3186d ago

Not sure if it was Xbox only back in the day but I'd love a current gen jet set radio!

Paytaa3186d ago

Jet Set Radio Future was only on Xbox. Fantastic game. Even better than Jet Set Radio for the Dreamcast in my opinion. Such a good soundtrack too

ninsigma3186d ago

Game was beast and deserves to come back on current gen. And hell yeah plus one for that soundtrack!

Review: Table Top Racing: World Tour (Xbox One) by The Gamerscore Whores

Without a doubt, one of our highlights from EGX Rezzed 2016 was Table Top Racing. It was almost a classic love tale…”As soon as we locked eyes… (enter mushy crap here…)” – We think you get the picture. It just reminded us of a time where gaming was much less complicated and way more colourful, however at the time the game was only due to be released on the PS4… That’s not a bad thing. It just mean’t that being my primary console of choice is Xbox One, we wouldn’t get to play this any time soon as the majority of my games and friends reside in the Microsoft ecosystem – so when we got word this was getting a release on Xbox One, we immediately put our hands up and said “Yes, Please!”.
