PlayStation 3 video editor tested

E4G: With Sony releasing version 3.40 for the PlayStation 3, some features were included in this update. One of the very noticeable features is the video editor. This is something that I have been waiting for to come to the PlayStation 3 because of all the power it has and all that jazz.

eggbert5801d ago

what exactly can be done with the video editor aside from adding a watermark. Is there an article that delves deeper into this video editor somewhere?

dkblackhawk505801d ago

Edit the video segments...add audio as stated and add a watermark/text, slow it up/down...that is basically it. (Editing wise)

matrix2245801d ago

Damn...beat me to it, curse you :P

Sharingan_no_Kakashi5801d ago

it doesnt seem to work with content recorded in eye create. Unless I'm doing something wrong.

Beefstew4u5801d ago

You're not doing anything wrong. I tried capturing new footage in EyeCreate, exported it, and it would not work in this new video editing thing.

ThanatosDMC5801d ago (Edited 5801d ago )

Yep, it's a basic video editor. I have a program on my PC but i have no idea how to use it properly. I suck at video editing but this is a good feature for me... but my problem is my internet upload speed.

No, i dont think we can make a 9000 video on this, Vegeta.

Oh yeah, i forgot. It really does everything.

r1sh125801d ago

I really wish that they would allow another OS on the ps3..
I would install windows and edit videos using adobe premiere like I do for my videos on youtube...
A little unfair

ThanatosDMC5800d ago

Thank the pirates for screwing that up for some people.

Great feature, good job Sony :D

matrix2245801d ago

They should make a music sort of mixer thingy now, would be fun!

-Alpha5801d ago (Edited 5801d ago )

This is an AWESOME feature.

They HAVE to incorporate more gameplay features though! Ability to take replays, saved films, etc. is what this thing was MADE for. Hopefully it happens, it'd be awesome and I dare say it'd be a bigger highlight than Cross Game Chat.

If they can expand on this, allow music to be added, etc. and you'd pretty much have a great tool for people to make montages and stuff.

Come on Sony, you can do it!

I really hope Sony asks for this to be put in all games like trophies!

Remember, trophies were optional until Sony demanded it.

If games like MoH, and even CoD can incorporate the ability to save videos or stuff like this we will have an even easier way for people to make game videos, and it'd be an awesome way to get famous on Youtube, get on Machinima, etc. This is a great, great tool.

@E4G

I was wondering what you were doing online on my PSN list lol.

rdgneoz35801d ago

If more companies add the ability to take in game videos, this thing will kick ass.

Ilikegames765801d ago

that some games for the PS3 could record movie clips and then you could edit it on the video editor and upload it to Youtube. Maybe record a clip from an awesome lap on one of the tracks in GT5 and then edit and upload.

Ravage275801d ago

i spent a couple of hours editing my huge list of game videos and i must say, it's a pretty neat app.

This will tie in nicely with GT5's video recording feature, and i'm sure all upcoming first party titles will support this. inFamous2 for e.g. is perfect choice.

I might be wrong on this, but i noticed that PSN levels are now displayed next to the PSN ID in your friend's list.

matrix2245801d ago

Great article, this is a very easy to use tool, I love it!

Philaroni5801d ago

Wonder if you can use it in GT5 to edit saved game video. Or if U2 will get an update to use it someday. Could be a very cool feature if only they use it right with the you tube feature in other games.

dkblackhawk505801d ago

That would be nice, a keylight feature would be awesome too. Would help with green screening in Uncharted 2 (If that is what U2 means).

Pandamobile5801d ago (Edited 5801d ago )

This seems pretty useless. Why can't Sony release a video encoder or something the PS3 would actually be good at? The Cell is pretty beast at h.264 conversions.

-Alpha5801d ago

True, but it's as if it's there to be expanded on. Sony needs to be able to let other devs use the tool right. I can easily see Polyphony incorporating it, but if Sony can reach out to guys like Treyarch, DICE, etc. then it'd be very awesome.

evilmonkey5015801d ago

we used to be able to in linux...

ThanatosDMC5801d ago

If only we can play MKV videos, i hate having to convert them into something playable on my PS3. I usually lose some quality.

jjesso19935801d ago

You can play mkv's with ps3 media server (thats what its called ) it works fine without losing quality as long as you got duel core processor then it will be fine. I did it over wireless connection and never had problem but wired would oviousley be better choice.

ThanatosDMC5800d ago

I know, but then it'd be more sensible for me to just watch it on my laptop. I want the actual file to be playable on my PS3.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8519d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele19d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk18d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay18d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10119d ago (Edited 19d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit18d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg18d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10118d ago (Edited 18d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14919d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle32d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit32d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog32d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog32d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad32d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_32d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage32d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda32d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
