PALGN: Mortal Kombat Preview

While many of the famous 2D fighting game series are from the East and are infused with Japanese anime stylings and conventions, there is however one series from the West that has stood the test of time and generated a large and loyal fan following, that being Mortal Kombat

haha i remember trying to hit the start button on the arcade when you get this idiot saying "toasty" just to fight Smoke, good times.

DRiX5809d ago

I pray everyday that it makes it into this one.

I just hope the controls are more responsive than previous titles in the franchise. The reason why MK franchise was never really accepted by the competitive fighting game community was because it lacked the responsiveness and technical depth in comparison to Tekken or Street Fighter.

gamejediben5809d ago

Actually that is not true. MKII was accepted as a very deep competitive fighting game and for a long time, it rivaled Street Fighter and sold a lot better.

But with MK3 taking out lots of fan favorite characters (like Scorpion, Kitana, Mileena, Reptile, Raiden, Johnny Cage and Baraka) and adding "dial a combos" and a stupid run button, Mortal Kombat began to lose the crowds at the arcades. They remedied some of that with UMK3 but MK4 was an epic disaster.

MK then went to the home consoles with Deadly Alliance, Deception, Armageddon, Shaolin Monks and MK vs DC. But none of those game had that classic 2D, fast paced game-play that allowed you to create your own combos and play style.

MK seemed to die a horrible death with the watered down MK vs DC but thanks to WBs timely interruption, MK was saved to fight another day and now Ed Boon and company wanting to return to the roots of Mortal Kombat with this reboot, fans have much reason to rejoice as the competitive MK of old is coming back to show Street Fighter whats what.

As far as I know while growing up playing both Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, there were consistently many more competitive tournaments going on for Street Fighter and later Tekken than Mortal Kombat. MK tournaments were far fewer and far less attended. And from what I recall, the MK franchise never made it big outside the United States, while SF and Tekken franchise were pretty popular elsewhere.

I don't understand how you can say that the early MK games provided a deep competitive fighting opportunity when the majority of the characters were identical except for differing sprites.

cant wait. really curious to see how many characters they are going to end up putting in and if they will offer custom character creations. 2d is where it is at with the fighting games.

now the only thing I want from Mortal Kombat is solid story telling. Several of the past games have failed to tell an interesting story, or even if they had one they didn't do it right. Perhaps have cutscenes for the story mode like in the previous game, but play them out in more detail. A solid story from Mortal Kombat is what I'm really looking forward to.

I really hope this game succeeds.

Looking forward to MK, Socom 4 and Twisted Metal.

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde31d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.

Mortal Kombat: Flawless Victory Announced

A new book detailing the artwork of the franchise has been announced

robtion297d ago

Let me fix this title to something less click baity for you:

New Book: Mortal Kombat: Flawless Victory Announced.

Garethvk297d ago (Edited 297d ago )

The description clearly says what it is. It is not like people have to click to the site. They just have to read.

robtion297d ago

Sure they don't have to go to the site but to get to the description they already have to have clicked on it. Thus the term 'click bait'.

Rebel_Scum297d ago (Edited 297d ago )

If its a book say its a book in the article title. Everyone’s gonna think this is a new game and get annoyed reading your description.

Garethvk297d ago (Edited 297d ago )

The Mods had no issues with the title.
The first line under the image says new book and you can see it in the preview windows without even having to click to read the description.

It also says a Visual History on the image.

Rebel_Scum297d ago

On desktop and mobile the text a visual history is not visible in the thumbnail on the homepage.

I grew up on this stuff. Adding it to the art collection!

I do hope the next MK iteration goes back to the core of what made these characters appeal in the first place. A few of them lost their edge - I think I've had enough with some of the auntie designs 😂
