Will a SSD boost your PS3's performance?

Video Game Blogger: "The answer here is (obviously) yes. The Solid State Disk technology is much much faster than your old Hard Disk Drives. The reason for this is SSD’s are solid, they don’t have any moving parts where as your traditional HDD has moving parts that are needed to read and write data."

Depends on what you mean by "boosting PS3's performance", really..

Godmars2905821d ago

Speed up load times. That's always a nice thing.

Just not sure the price, the limitation of HDD space, are worth the benefit.

An ironic turn considering the old cart vs CD of the PS1/N64 days though.

wicko5821d ago

Yeah, you'd need an extremely expensive SSD to get a decent performance boost and still have a sizeable capacity.

Substance1015821d ago

I wouldnt do it on a console. SSDS need trim to maintain write performance. How will a console send the Trim command?

Hideo_Kojima5820d ago

It would but I wish I had money for it.

Tomdc5820d ago

only on games you have installed to hard drive

Conloles5820d ago

Why waste an SSD on a console

deafwing5820d ago

... the price and GB size is also a bit of a problem for most gamers anyways, however, it's nice to know that you do get a reasonable speed increase. Expect to see these bad boys in the next gen of consoles I guess.

Might improve load times by 50%, otherwise not worthwhile.

What it will do is greatly increase HDD heat output, though.

***write times are still comparable to quality HDD's. ***

Write times are limited by the BD speed, not the HDD speed.

SuperSaiyan45820d ago

>_> It uses memory no moving parts how is it going to generate tons more heat over a normal hard drive? It's like a giant USB flash drive and yeah they dont output any heat either.

evrfighter5821d ago (Edited 5821d ago )

I would recommend the Intel SSD's.

paid about $100 for a 40gb and read times are insane. I had BC2 installed on it and it would load maps within 5 secs on maximum settings 8xAA.

write times are still comparable to quality HDD's.

Mine is used as my boot drive to just speed up my startup/shutdown times.

Crazyglues5821d ago

(PS4) No... LoL

he is talking about on PC....

Hideo_Kojima5820d ago

I hope PS4 has those :P

Maybe PS4 should have 2 split hardrives one SSD for game installs around 40GB and another one for PSN games, Movies and Music that is 250GB

With the ability to change which games install on which drive incase the first one feels up.

dredgewalker5820d ago

100 bucks for 40gigs is a lot of money for so little space for me to use. I can buy 2 500gb hdd for that money. I won't buy one until it can match the hdd's pricing and capacity.

Bleyd5820d ago

Maybe PS4 should have a Raid5 across 10 disks. That would boost performance too. :)

Seriously, though, at the prices SSDs are currently tagged at you won't see them in any shipped console configuration for a while. Price has to come WAY down to be more feasible.

Its too expensive to be really worthwhile for use in a PS3. PC maybe, PS3 no. Just get the largest conventional drive you can afford, it's areal density (the more data packed onto a smaller space means that the drive heads move less to retrieve more data) alone will improve performance over a small drive typically, especially for those with 20GB/60GB/80GB drives.

500GB drives are pretty common now and in the uk, sneaking under the 50 pound barrier. You'll never need another drive for your Ps3 again.

soljah5821d ago

this guy on ign is a idiot. why is he doing test for write times. the clear advantage to ssd is in read times and i can assure u that ssd drives are blazing fast, super quiet and run cool. they are far superior to disk based drives. the only thing holding them back is price. ssd drives are the future

ProjectVulcan5821d ago (Edited 5821d ago )

The test isnt the best but it still gets to the correct result. Who in their right mind would spend another 100 pounds to get a much smaller drive where they probably couldnt fit all their stuff on, just to save a few minutes a week cumulatively on load times for PS3....

If you are playing online a lot too, it doesnt matter if you load to the game ten seconds before everyone else, you still gotta sit waiting for them to get in the game til it starts!!

vhero5820d ago

Wait but can you use a SSD on 360 to boost performance I think the 360 fans want to know. The answer is no... I mean this is ANOTHER feature for PS3... All 360 has is cross chat and people say its superior... PS3 has so many cool features such as this.. SSD will be amazing in a few years. PS3 is truly future proof with SSD compatibility and blu-ray 360 is just behind the times.

pangitkqb5820d ago

I already have a 320 gig HDD in my PS3 and it is working just fine. I'm not even close to filling it up. If SSD wasn't so expensive it would be worth checking out.

jerethdagryphon5820d ago

moving stuff around on disc is much faster however moving stuff to is mostly limited to the speed of sata which i think is 200mbs peak

codyodiodi5821d ago

Increasing it. Making it better. Anything that would be better would be a boost in performance.

STONEY45821d ago

The technology is still relatively new, some PC tests I've seen show very large gaps between SSDs and HDDs. All I could see it doing for the PS3 is faster load times and installs.

Wouldnt that have to be taken into account when making games, surely they base it upon the standard (slowest) possible HDDs found in the PS3 and optimize for that.

Loading/installing perhaps and maybe pulling data like music of video might increase in speed, but my SSD in my PC doesnt seem that much quicker.

Edit: Google shows plenty of comparisons.

thehitman5821d ago

Just if u have a SSD then if you downloading etc yours will be exceptionally fast compared to others it just makes thigns go faster when putting things on your ps3 doesnt enhance gameplay or anything.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle32d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Relientk7741d ago

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga41d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit40d ago (Edited 40d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199240d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga40d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac40d ago (Edited 40d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman40d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box41d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion40d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7241d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7540d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit40d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14941d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7741d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
