Kinect will be standalone and PC compatible by 2011

Microsoft's Kinect gesture control technology will be integrated in media centre PCs and set-top boxes by 2011.

The company that provided the Vole with the gesture control gadget used on the Xbox 360 Kinect, formerly known as Project Natal, expects its technology to be adopted by other hardware manufacturers.

even the peripherals are not exclusives.

Mr_Bun5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

MS and Sony just have different definitions of the word. A PS3 exclusive means only on a PS3, where a MS exclusive means only NOT on a PS3...at least for a couple months

Conloles5802d ago

Wow but at least this peripheral will be able to do 1080P with more than 4x AA! Oh did I mention it does 3D as well at the same resolution? Oh did I also mention you can also use the Wii remote and Ps3 controller on my pc and probably move eventually (dont know why youd want to seeing as its less accurate than a mouse). Have fun with that....

GrieverSoul5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

You forgot it can read Blurays too! Oops... Sorry! :P

*Scratches head and thinks why he is feeding the troll*

On topic:
If we go by this definition then soon Kinect will be absolete. The new LCDs on the market can now read DivX. Before you had to had a DVD player with DivX compatibility. Now, youre TV does it for you. Who knows by 2012 we wont see Sony or LG talking about waving or talking to your TV to change channel?! o.O

EDIT: Im not really into Kinect (or Move by the way) but answer me this:

How many of you have voice commands on your cell phone?! Do you use them?

My answer: I have! Do I use them?! No! Why? Why not pressing a button to do it?? o.O

Motion5802d ago

What in the world are you talking about?

nycredude5802d ago

This troll can't even spell consoles correctly and you expect him/it to know what he/it is talking about? Dude haven't a clue about anything. I bet he doesn't even play games.

harv7115802d ago

Consoles forgot to mention that the only way to kill him is to use fire.

FIRE BAD!

Substance1015802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

Funny conloles gets called a troll for stating facts.

1080p check
3D @1080p check
wii mote support check
DS3 support check

Since wiimote and DS3 already work, no reason to disagree that the Move will follow. But as Conloles said, since mouse is the most accurate aiming device Move will be a gimmick in comparison.

I dont see why so many disagrees with him, oh maybe cause people dont like it that a platform exists which does it all and that their favorite platform may never catch up.

ALFAxD_CENTAURO5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

Can't wait to play with Move, in 3D at 1080p at the same time on PS3 =). Can't wait to play with this Innovation (gimmick for you).

Substance1015802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

Lets be realistic here..

Ps3's exclusives like uncharted, GOW or KZ dont run in 1080p. Move doesnt add any horse power to the PS3.

What makes you think you will see games running at 1080p all of a sudden? unless they arent pushing the hardware at all?

Your arguement is still valid if you say 720p on the PS3 though or maybe below depending on game.

waiting on mindless disagrees.

Have fun blowing 3000usd on 3DTV for the 5 or so games you will play. dont tell me you will like all the games Sony gives you. for half the money i could make you a PC with well over 300titles running in 3D and yea that will really run games in 1080p and 3D... you know it ;-)

sikbeta5802d ago

@Conloles

Dude, you totally Missed the Point here, FangBlade wasn't talking Bad about kinect, he was talking about the Exclusive-Status, meaning that if you don't have a x360, you can buy kinect and use it with your PC, that's means you Don't Need to buy a x360 if you don't Want to...

Lightsaber5802d ago

Exclusive ? Where does it say anything about exclusive ? MS never said it be xbox exclusive. Only that the games would be. While it probably would be called kinect the tech will probably be added to all kinds of things and become a standard. The same way touch is now the standard for phones.

Its funny the sony fangirls seem to more interested in kinect then anyone else. Is it really that much better the the wii hd.........oops I mean move

Wrathman5802d ago

This is like Sony and Blu-Ray.

Microsoft wants Panasonic, Sharp and so on to get MARKET SATURATION of Kinect. Make Kinect the STANDARD.

I think Microsoft would giggle like a little schoolgirl if Sony decided to make a Sony Kinect.

PS. It's a Xbox 360 console exclusive. Unless you think Sony is going to ditch Move and give Microsoft a healthy financial cut for a PS3 Kinect. LOL

Pennywise5802d ago

JonahFalcon, wow... I need to read a book to gain back what you just took from me.

Kinect is a camera... not a disc medium. Your comment lack any sense of sense.

Gothdom5802d ago

"I think Microsoft would giggle like a little schoolgirl if Sony decided to make a Sony Kinect. "

is this Jeopardy? ok, I'll try to answer that:

What is the PSEye?

BubbleSystemSuck5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

so... kinect can read multiple Dvds at time?
wooow... just WoW... very funny comparisson.
Like Mass Efect 2 vs. Heavy Rain

O_o

Kyur4ThePain5802d ago

If Sony determines that gesture control works well enough and customers want it in products like TV set etc, they would most probably include the technology in their products. That way the customer wins.
Unlike MS who still insists on excluding the Blu-Ray experience from their console. Wish they cared more about what customers want than their little giggling spells, don't you agree?

dustgavin5802d ago

I do recall people saying that both Nintendo and Sony passed on this technology years ago when it was presented to them because it is not precise enough.

http://www.vg247.com/2010/0...

sikbeta5802d ago

@JonahFalcon

Guy, WTF are you talking about? kinect is an ADD-ON, not a Physical Media Device or a "Core" Hardware you need to buy or something like that, no-1 is going to pay royalties to MS for a Camera, Why in Hell any-1 is going to pay Royalties for an add-on-camera?

Unbelievable.... .... ....

Proxy5802d ago

If your tying to say the impressive part of Kinect is the software, then I have to agree.

The Fable on PC experiment is finally becoming clear....they will use fable to push kinect on PC as well...

Despite the fact that fable was rumoured to no longer be using Kinect I can't see how it could be any other way, why else would they change tact all of a sudden?

Substance1015802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

Will be funny when Kinect and Move flop, watch them record even higher losses lol.

sikbeta5802d ago

I'm asking this, What IF (it might happen) the Device Show More Precision or "Runs" better on a PC rather than the console?

evrfighter5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

they are actually ensuring its survival by bringing it to the pc.

@sikbeta

you can be certain it will. somebody out there will no doubt optimize M$'s drivers

ProjectVulcan5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

PS3 fanboy i am not, but that statement did make me laugh out loud. God i love PC....

Christopher5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

1. I admit I got a very good laugh at FangBlade's comment.

2. Consoles are cheaper than computers and are made to connect to TVs... this doesn't seem like that big of a deal.

3. If you are going to use Kinect to navigate your desktop... it seems like an awfully big peripheral considering you're still going to need a keyboard and mouse.

Mista T5802d ago

why would any serious pc gamer buy this, I wouldn't

BYE5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

I'd try it for PC when the price becomes reasonable, like $49.

$149 is a joke for a gimmick like that.

Alcon Caper5802d ago

Not just for gaming, you know. This is actually more useful on a PC...

Nihilism5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

I'd rather spend my new money on a gaming mouse.

A practical peripheral:

http://www.amazon.com/Razer...

Blaze9295802d ago

Who said anything about using it for gaming?

Pandamobile5802d ago

I'm more excited about the homebrew and plugins for 3D suites like 3DS Max and Maya.

If someone can make a plugin for Kinect to capture skeletal rigs for use in Maya or 3DS, that would be huge for them.

Omega45802d ago

Doing this will make Kinect HUGE, MS is really pushing Kinect to be the next form of keyboard/mouse/controller wouldn't be surprising if their next OS revolves around it too.

tdrules5802d ago

Maybe when its as accurate as a 30 quid gaming mouse

Ingram5802d ago

Having the guts of saying those things, after seeing what Kinect is about, you and Jonah are either in plain denial, or just microsoft PR.

ElementX5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

To me, your comment sounded sarcastic, as if you were saying "if it works so well, let me send some email". I was simply responding to what I perceived as a sarcastic remark. I know the article mentions Kinect and PCs, but you didn't mention PCs, simply Kinect.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio13d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing13d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit13d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing13d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay14d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn215d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn214d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown15d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay14d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay14d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac14d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger15d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300015d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde15d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde14d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_14d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
