Sony: Almost All Sony Developers Looking Into 3D

Sony is making a big push for 3D with 3D televisions and a 3D ready game console. But Sony isn't alone, the company says.

According to Sony Worldwide Studios honcho Shuhei Yoshida, "Almost all WWS developers are researching how they can incorporate stereoscopic 3D technology into their games."

dangert125793d ago

sony are forcing it abit 2much imo but hey if they don't who will, can some one tell me if the 3d version be its own game or is it a setting in the 2d game?

Cloudberry5793d ago

---------------------------
it would be both in the future, possibly.

But most of the future games are the latter of what you just said, in my opinion.

GWAVE5793d ago

How many Microsoft developers are looking into Kinect?

See, as gamers, we can all agree that games are what matters, right? And with Rare and Lionhead working on games like Milo and river rafting, who is left to make the hardcore games?

Why o why5793d ago

that's a rhetorical question right ;)

sikbeta5793d ago

3D is an Option, If you don't have a 3DTV, you still can play 3D Games on a HDTV/SDTV, so there is no problem with that...

ALFAxD_CENTAURO5793d ago

Yes, and PS3 and PC are the only platforms to make Native 3D.

n4gno5793d ago

3D on pc is a gimmick compared to bluray 3D and real 3D games.

YourFlyness5793d ago

Developers with have a regular and 3D version on one disc, taking advantage of the BD disc space

siyrobbo5793d ago

that makes no sense, the games use the same assets for rendering, they just render the same assets from 2 slightly different perspectives so they wouldnt need 2 different sets of files, the 3d effect is done in the renderer by the gpu

Anon19745793d ago (Edited 5793d ago )

You're 100% correct and developers have commented saying the exact same thing. The image just needs to be taken from a slightly different perspective to make the 3D image, and the Cell is apparently perfect for the type of mathematical calculations needed to make this adjustment on the fly. I can't remember which developer I was reading but he commented that the software that Sony provided does all the work for you without needing to render the image twice - which would understandably suck up huge processing power. I don't pretend to understand it myself (I don't take my real time rendering class until the fall) but certainly it sounds like they have it figured out.

I think what YourFlyness is talking about is Move games. I did hear and E3 that new games, because of the size of Blu-Ray would be able to have both the standard version and Move version available on the same disk. Perhaps YourFlyness was referring to those comments.

duplissi5793d ago (Edited 5793d ago )

...

you dont have to recreate the whole game in 3d.... all the assets(basically the stuff that fills up the disk): levels, sound, textures, character models are the same. but there might be a different executable for 3d and 2d, or at least different settings.

so uh what extra space is needed?

edit: damn you guys for saying what i was typing...

BeaArthur5793d ago

They're forcing it because of all the 3D TV's they are releasing.

FACTUAL evidence5793d ago

Too bad I won't be able to enjoy 3D.. =(

Iamback5793d ago

God no, stop killing Playstation brand by forcing crap from other SOny divisions.

sikbeta5793d ago

Why is that?

Blu-Ray was Pushed to Help SPE + The Bravia Division, but you complain about that, sorry but that's what Sony do, they use the Playstation Brand as Way To Push their Tech, there is nothing wrong about that when you know you get Better Stuff...

siyrobbo5793d ago

yeah, they arent forcing it, you dont have to play in 3d, the games will stil lwork without it. I dont see why adding extra features for free is a bad thing, even if you would never use them

PHOSADRA5793d ago

Even companies like Panasonic, and Philips are creating 3d tvs and they don't even have a game console to sell.

It may take a while but eventually 3d enabled tvs will become the new standard much like hd tv have.

I mean really... who has experienced 3d and hasn't said to themselves "I wish I had this at home."

Topshelfcheese5793d ago

I haven't. In fact I was getting extremely annoyed with the large irritating glass you have to wear for almost 3 hours for avatar. I play games to have fun, not to give myself a migraine. After watching avatar in 3d, i doubt i will ever do that again.

sikbeta5793d ago (Edited 5793d ago )

Electronic Manufacturers will Ditch HDTVs and FULLY Support 3DTVS cos With 3DTVS people can use them as 2D-HDTVs if they don't want to use the glasses or crap like that, it'll be pretty much the same thing that happened to SDTVs when Electronic Manufacturers decide to Go Fully on HDTVs...

tunaks15793d ago

thats wonderful for all 3 people who have 3d tvs.

n4gno5793d ago

yeah sure, like "bluray was wonderfull for the 3 people who have a lcd/plasma tv" and today, look around you :)

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy854d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele4d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk4d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay4d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon1014d ago (Edited 4d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit4d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg4d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon1013d ago (Edited 3d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz1494d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle17d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit17d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog17d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog17d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad17d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_17d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage17d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda17d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
