Microsoft's Stance On PC Gaming

TechRadar writes: "A leaked document from Microsoft has described how the company should answer those who are questioning if the company is losing faith in Games for Windows and PC Gaming as a whole."

Fable III on PC is nothing but an experiment to see if they can make a good profit by selling it off GFWL, and will probably be $60 to boot. If sales are not good, I don't see MS bringing anymore 360 games to PC.

The funniest thing about MS is that back in the day they claim they screen game ideas from developers and determine whether they are best suited for Xbox or Windows, then they release Halo Wars on 360 and close down Ensemble /facepalm

I like W7, but a lot of it is unnecessary for a gamer, if every game supported DX/Windows and OpenGL/Linux, I doubt many gamers would be using Windows. Mac OSX is not an option, you can't customize hardware, and their GPU's suck.

mcslick1015802d ago

Personally, I dislike MS when it comes to PC gaming, Valve will always be the king of the PC world.

captain-obvious5802d ago

MS sees more cash on the xbox
thats why they dont care that much about PC gaming anymore now

vhero5802d ago

All crap anyways as they said at E3 Fable 3 will not be coming to PC its only gonna be playable on 360. MS is abandoning PC which is a shame as games like AOE are some of the greatest games ever made. Ms should have stuck with PC gaming rather than entered the console industry as they were amongst the best at one point.

iamgoatman5802d ago

When did they say Fable 3 was only going to playable on the 360?

walk_star5802d ago

Did you even watch the press conference? True, they didn't mention Fable III on PC but they certainly did NOT say the PC version is cancelled.

Serg5802d ago

I would love to see them abandon DirectX so OpenGL could rise up, making Linux and MacOS an option for gamers. I use Linux, still have Windows to play from time to time though.

lelo2play5802d ago

I think PC gamers can thank Microsoft for some of the games they have been receiving... like Splinter Cell Conviction (Ubisoft said it was a Microsoft exclusive but it still arrived at the PC), Mass Effect 1 and 2, Fable 1 and 3, Gears of War 1 among many others. So PC gamers should think before bashing Microsoft. If you want to bash somebody, bash Sony or Nintendo because they don't release any exclusive for PC gamers.

Anon73495801d ago

Mass Effect 1/2 are a PC games ported to the 360, and a reaaaaly dumbed down port too.

If the sh1t60 wasn't made, us PC gamers would be getting better games that aren't dumbed down because of the 360's last gen capabilities.

Raf1k15801d ago

Mass Effect games are 360 games ported to PC with no enhancements.

Charmers5801d ago

Actually the fact the PC got Mass Effect had nothing to do with Microsoft. The original Mass Effect was always going to be a 360 exclusive. Then EA bought Bioware and arranged for a port to the PC. So it is EA that should get the credit for Mass Effect being on the PC.

As for Fable 1 and 3, well Fable 1 (an xbox 1 game) didn't come to the PC till the Xbox 360 came out and Fable 1 on the PC looked absolutely ghastly by modern standards. In other words they shouldn't have bothered.

As for you saying we should bash Nintendo and Sony ???? erm please show me how Nintendo and Sony have any responsibility to the PC ? Microsoft owes it's birth and continuing existence to the PC. The only reason MS can afford to fund your xbox 360 is because hundreds of millions of people buy Microsofts operating system. So MS has a responsibility to the PC platform but Nintendo and Sony do not.

sid4gamerfreak5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

Valve FTW

Microsoft = go to hell

PC Gaming may u always reign supreme

EDIT: I just looked further below down the comments section and i see jealous console fanboys angry and calling pc amers cheap bastards? Dcalfront and jimmy riddle have done a good job keeping these fanboys at bay so I wont go on arguing to the insecure console fanboys. One word to them: LOL

to console fanboys: Hope u enjoy ur sub hd 60 dollar game excluding map packs.

sid4gamerfreak5802d ago

I HATE GFWL

becuase of that i lost all my saved data for arkham asylum..had to start all over again..

the service is complete bullshit

DeadlyFire5801d ago

Only thing about Valve running all the gaming aspects of PC market is Microsoft is gonna get jealous at some point and try and buy Valve.

Benefit of good PC game is good toolset to make same maps for free.

GFWL is slapped together piece of crap. Everyone knows it except the Microsoft fans. Yes they do exist.

Impuse is also good idea. Its like Steam, but crafted by Stardock.

I hope Mac Gaming grows over the next 5 years as well. Its about time they start trying to aim for bigger games.

ryuzu5802d ago

GFWL is for all practical purposes dead. MS may still push it but it'll need a bigger game than Fable to appeal to PC Gamers.

MS invested huge amounts of cash in the 360 (including now Kinect) and they've yet to see a profit.

For a predominantly software development company, they must be wondering how come they're losing so much money on hardware, )whether due to reliability or new peripheral development) when it's not their core business.

MS already has a strong foothold on the PC market, so it makes sense they would try and get some more income from that platform - particularly when Valve, Stardock et al seem to be doing very well.

I think the next few months for MS is key - if Kinect ends up like a new Eyetoy and turns out to be a novel concept with no future, I think MS will need to make a quick decision on either rushing the 720 up or (judging by this document) ditching consoles altogether and taking their franchises (the few that there are that are worth something) to PC and other consoles.

r.

MS don't care for PC. They care for what matters: The 360.
Fuck MS will support Sony before PC.

Inside_out5802d ago

Well...I suspect that Alan Wake could make its way on to PC. Gears of war 2 would be nice. I'm sure M$ has a plan, we will have to wait and see. Halo Reach, Gears 3 and Kinect on PC...could you imagine.

jjesso19935802d ago

then why is natal coming to pc ? I supose its coming to ps3 to ?

Deathracer5802d ago

PC Games have gone down the shitter, and PC gamers left are a some cheap bastards.

iamgoatman5802d ago

Come again? PC gamers are cheap bastards? What?

Deathracer5802d ago

Yup. PC gamers cry like little girls when a game is $60 yet they get every other game the same as consoles for $40.

Biggest5802d ago

PC gamers are strangely cheap bastards. They pay tons of money for the newest technology, then turn around and pirate everything they can.

iamgoatman5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

So we should bend over and take whatever we get like console gamers? I mean, DLC used to be free until you idiots happily started paying $15 a pop for some map pack.

I can't be bothered to explain why PC games are cheaper as I'd pretty much just be repeating dchalfont.

@Biggest

In the future you should save yourself some time and just type "I'm an ignorant tool" it'll have the same effect, and save the rest of us having to read the usual bollocks you come up with.

chak_5802d ago

no, a lot of PC gamers buy their games, otherwise PC market wouldn't be growing.

Take it the other way around, console games sell less & less everyday, some publisher accuse DS, and xbox torrents plague the internet...

Trolling is bad dude, PC gamers are gamers, just with different taste sometimes ^^

But we still buy games. I do

Nihilism5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

There is a good reason why PC games should be cheaper...because coonsole gamers pay $10-20 ass tax on every console game they buy because activision etc have kindly passed on their publishing fees for the closed platforms onto the consumer.

On PC the developers pay no such fee, cheaper to make= cheaper to sell.

Only an idiot would pay console game price for a PC game....actually only an idiot would pay the console game price for a console game.

Guess what you win!?

http://pimpinandcrimpin.com...

"and PC gamers left are a some cheap bastards"

Right...I just bought a 40" LCD TV for my room ( my second LCD TV ), and another blu ray, and i'm buying a gtx480 in a few weeks ( $500 ) so I really don't see how that makes me a cheap ass...just because we are not willing extra $ for inferior game versions does not make us cheap, it makes us smart.

captain-obvious5802d ago

damn
how you keep you PC soo clean ??
my PC is like a dust trap i have to dust it like once a month to keep it clean

DeathMetal5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

nice setup what case is that on your PC

rkimoto5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

Only an idiot would pay $500 dollars for a gfx card when you could easily buy 8-10 console games with that same amount.

You can spin it any way you can, but PC gaming is not as cheap as you imply it to be.

Let's leave it as anybody can play their favorite platform and will incurr in its costs regardless of logic, because in the end it's still a hobby and a luxury, just that.

trancefreak5802d ago

I love both pc and console gaming Im not limiting myself here.

Btw nice set up. My baby would have sh1t all destroyed in about an hour :)

Anon73495801d ago

You are an "ignorant tool."

Why buy a PS3 when you can buy 10-20 PS2 games? So you have access to more games, with better graphics, that's why.

The same applies to PC gaming, I spent 1200$ on my computer and now I can play Crysis with Insane resolutions, 32xAA, and 120fps if I wanted to.

I don't have to upgrade my computer for several years now, and any upgrade I do won't cost more than 200$.

PC gaming is cheaper than console gaming in the long run and it's the ONLY way to play competitively(Fighting games being the only exception).

rkimoto5801d ago

@Anon7349

For starters, chill out dude, I didn't mean to "personally offend you", I was just trying to single out a comment that was offensive and that also works both ways (you can't call somebody an idiot while it can also apply to you).

I don't really care how much you spend on your hobby, it's your money to spend and how you use it. I wasn't discussing on how much you're gonna spend the next ten years, because that's not the point, you use your money as you may see fit.

The main point is that you don't need to call somebody else an idiot for spending money on what they like, be it $1,200 PC's that can be used by DARPA, or $1,200 on a console and games.

And certainly you don't need to attack me personally for my own opinion.

it's because of people like you willing to spend 70€ + shitton of DLC that gaming is becoming shit faster than you talk.

Is your mom paying your DLC too?

Get back to COD teenager.

tdrules5802d ago

I had to stop my torrents of every PC game in the past 15 years and engage the Flux Capacitor on my 5 grand PC to answer this so you better appreciate it.

Newtype5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

hell no i am not cheap. paid about 2000+ for my gaming rig with:
Full Tower
Motherboard (EVGA)
940 i7
6GB triple channel corsair dominator
750 PSU
160 SSD
2TB Caviar black
win7 ultimate
ATI Radeon 5750 (will be upgrading to 5870s xfire)

pangitkqb5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

I love my 360, PS3, and Wii but...console gamers are the morons that decided the would pay out the a$$ for DLC. $15 for map-packs that used to be free? Way to go, morons. Console Devs also decided to make gamers pay their publishing fees. You can't put a game on any console until you pay the company that owns the rights (Sony, Msoft, etc...) Those HEFTY fees DON'T EXIST on PC, hence the stupidity of having to pay the same price as a console game.

By the way, my PC can play every game made for the last 30 years or so. How's that for backwards compatibility?

You fail. Terribly. Get your fail off the interwebs.

Jacobite5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

Who you calling cheap! what a retarded comment . A put my hand in my pocket for games more the you do probably, and I dont do pirate software either, neither does most of my friends. I buy games for PC, PS3, Xbox360 most new and recent and other times second hand for Xbox , GC, PS2 N64 & DC but PC gaming is my first choice.

jjesso19935802d ago

How are pc gamers cheap bastards what do you pay for shitty out dated hardware like the 360 when some pc gamers pay $700-$2000 + getting 2560p monitor if any ones cheap bastard its the console olny owners.

u should also realise you pay extra becuase your paying sony/nintendo/mirosoft as companys need pay roylanties to eaither sony/micrsoft/nintendo pc games dont need do that as theres no middle man so games should cheaper so game priced equeley with consoles on pc then we are getting rip off.

TABSF5801d ago

I have purchased over 150 games on Steam and but over £1000 in my system

bet this cheap b@stard gets pre-owned games, which is worse for a developer as they see the people paying for them but get no money out of it

Microsoft Gaming Revenue Drops 7% Year-on-Year, Content and Services Down 5%, Xbox Hardware Down 33%

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio11d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing11d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9211d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit11d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing11d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9211d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay13d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn213d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn212d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown13d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay13d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay13d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac12d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger13d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300013d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde13d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde12d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_12d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
