Twisted Metal not pursuing AAA status -why?

"We may never be The Beatles, but we don't really want to be The Beatles," says series creator.

Twisted Metal creator David Jaffe has said that the vehicular combat series may never commanded the respect of triple-A games like Call of Duty, but it's not trying to.

"We did Twisted Metal Black in 2001 and about three months later GTA hit. And since GTA came out, the idea of being in a car in a level - there's a lot of brand new expectations about what that means," Jaffe told Joystiq.......

I think I liked it better back before E3 when no one knew what Eat Sleep Play were working on and they were keeping quiet.

Now we're getting non-news bombed by every site who can get a noise out of Jaffe....

Give it a break please.

LoVeRSaMa5821d ago

I think Jaffe is unsure where the title will fit in, its one of a kind so its hard to predict.

I hope it adds a new dimension to multiplayer, I love FPS but I want something new, I want a smash up melee game like Twisted to shake things up.

"the vehicular combat series may never commanded the [[respect]] of [[[triple-A games]]] like -»[Call of Duty]«-

COD is Triple-A? For God sake, lower standard at its Finest...

this part was the best:

"We've had our fans and been real profitable. But it's never had the kind of respect of like, Modern Warfare. Even when we were at our heights. We never got the awards and stuff. But for Twisted, we always felt good about that. Twisted feels like a bar band to us. Or a garage band that has a lot of heart and soul. And we're real loyal to our fans. We may never be The Beatles, but we don't really want to be The Beatles with this game."

Epicor5821d ago

What's with all the COD hate nowadays? Many COD games are triple-A. Check Metacritic. Sure opinions are subjectives...But as it's not possible allways to be right about everything, I like to use Metacritic as a source of game scores when it comes to debating about triple-A statuses etc. Metacritic has the score that's as objective as possible. I find it pretty unnecessary to claim that games like MW and MW2 aren't triple-A titles as the game sales and review scores are evident proofs that they are.

About the quote: Yeah I agree, that's the best part. :)

DarkSpawnClone5820d ago

if you use Metacritic to decide what to like about a game or what games to like thats sad. the hate comes from cod always being basically the same game with a different story, its a matter of time before this fact catches up to them they don't really changed the multilayer that much its all been the same this gen, i think some people want some thing else now cod comes out every year some people are bound to get sick of it.i really don't get how some people only play cod, personally that would bore me.imo

I wish you were more like Quagmire from Family Guy.

cryymoar5820d ago

His reference to The Beatles has nothing to do with AAA status.
He is talking about popularity.

He is saying that Twisted Metal may never be mainstream, (like The Beatles) but that's okay because he feels his game is more like an underground band with heart and soul. Just because it isn't selling 5 million on day one, doesnt mean it isn't triple-A.

Look at games like Shadow Of The Colossus. It didnt sell anywhere near what GTA, Halo, or Madden sells, but the graphics, musical score, artistic style, and epicness is unmatched by any of those best selling games.

best selling does not equal best quality.

Maybe Jaffe cares more about game play and physics than graphics. Since when did leading edge graphics make a game AAA. Dammit some people just have their heads up their bums.

GunShotEddy5821d ago

So you believe the Wii is great then. Obviously you never criticized it's last-gen graphics since you're so open-minded.

Hallucinate5821d ago

i agree with silver...and i think i can speak for us both when i say wii for the most part has sh1tty games

GunShotEddy5820d ago

I always hear PS3 biased gamers (I have no preference since I had the sense to buy all three) talk about image comparisons and graphics. Look how many fanboy rants exist in the comparison threads. But let a major exclusive have subpar graphics and suddenly looks ain't important.

cryymoar5820d ago

@ GunShotEddy

You're mistaken those biased games for xb360 gamers.
Those are the ones that rant about slightly higher textures on multiplatform games, yet pretend Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, or Heavy Rain didn't push the bar whatsoever.

Twisted Metal is and always has been an arcade-style combat racing game.
As opposed to Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, and Heavy Rain, those games are supposed to make the player feel as if he/she is there, the purpose for those games were to have a cinematic feel.

Twisted Metal is NOT one of those games.

sid4gamerfreak5821d ago

For this game, AAA doesnt matter. Its all about clean 60fps action fun. Jaffe will be focusing on 60 fps, a solid frame rate rather than graphics as this game will be chaotic

toaster5821d ago

60FPS is VERY important for a game like this. You will be moving around so fast and so much will be thrown at you at once that if the framerate hiccups then you're dead. Any gamer who plays racers/driving games knows that a solid framerate is important. One drop in FPS and you're in last place before you can blink.

Twisted Metal isn't "racing" but the same principle applies, the frame drops and you've been blown to shreds, especially in a game like this where the action happens so fast and is so chaotic.

K-man005821d ago

Jaffe, you talk too much dude. And let us be the judge of that.

NeloAnjelo5821d ago

AAA is earned not made. Regardless of the reviews... The gamers will be the deciding factor.

Wow cyberpunk is a great pick up. If you haven’t played it you should definitely give it a try

Christopher323d ago

Banishers was dragged down by the need to go back to old areas multiple times.

GhostScholar324d ago

Also if you bought it at launch and couldn’t deal with all the bugs it’s a totally different game now

stupidusername324d ago

Played it on release and thought it was a mess. But I'm currently playing it again now on both PS5 and Switch 2 with cross save progression, and it's really different to how I remember it. Really enjoying it now, and it's really polished and immersive.

darthv72324d ago

Despite owning the 2077 One X console and the steelbook edition of the game... i still have never played it. I may actually give 2077 a try (via the portal) as there has been so much talk about it again, thanks to SW2 and now this comparison vid from DF. https://youtu.be/SvGQik3m6a...

dveio324d ago (Edited 324d ago )

I think it's an okay decision or happening.

iirc, wasn't there even a new and probably last update coming soon announced recently?

I've never played 2077, neither. (I am still a bit mad about their ... well, anyway.)

But I think it can't get better to play that game, or any game for that matter, in a 100% complete, fully updated build.

DivineHand125324d ago

Cyberpunk and Risk of rain 2 are the best of the bunch. Not a bad month if you are one of the few that haven't played those games.

yeastori324d ago

Cyberpunk is probably one of the best games I've ever played, even when it came out with all the bugs and glitches and broken gameplay on consoles, I still loved it at its core because the world was exactly what I wanted in a dystopian vision of the real future and the story was actually well done and compelling. With the fixes and then Phantom Liberty I just knew that this game could've been GOTY winner if it hadn't been released too early and released on PS5. XBX and two years later.

shinXseijuro324d ago

Might give cyberpunk a chance now that the game redeemed itself . Is it only the basic game or with the newer content ?

xHeavYx324d ago

According to the article, it's just the base game, but the DLC will be 30% off

TM3 is my favorite but I'll take what they bring out gladly. Fun times back in the day and great soundtracks

Cacabunga606d ago

Last one on ps4 wasn’t good at all.
Hoping for some good reboot or remake of the first 3

Dagexon606d ago

You mean the one on ps3?

Cacabunga605d ago

Yes i do, thanks! I realized too late couldn’t edit

Lego 2K Drive features an exciting mode called Brick Brawl, inspired by Twisted Metal. Players can create, share, and upload various cars, including ones like Sweet Tooth. The game boasts thousands of custom cars, ranging from the Batmobile to the Sweet Tooth ice cream truck.

InUrFoxHole606d ago

Never understood the like for the series. Not my bag but I know a lot of gamers are clamoring for a new game and liked the TV. Series

TiredGamer606d ago (Edited 606d ago )

TM1 and 2 are time period classics. They were a bit rough, ugly, and grungy, but they felt right during the time period they were released and they scratched that early console “death match” itch before FPS games would completely swallow that market.

Many great memories with friends playing couch co-op and 1v1. Short, and quick-and-dirty gameplay that we returned to over and over. I’d buy a remake or proper remastering of the first two games day one.

InUrFoxHole606d ago

Lol, nice! I remember having the tiger handheld or watch..

FinalFantasyFanatic605d ago

I played those so much as I kid, I bought the Twisted Metal games that were on PSN as Playstation Classics, wow, they feel clunky by today's standards, they could really use the remake/remaster treatment.

UltimateOwnage606d ago

Twisted Metal: Black is when the series really hit for me. I still love that game so much. It was kind of downhill for the series after that IMO. I'd love to see the series go back to its roots, but I don't hold out a lot of hope for David Jaffe coming back from where he is these days to oversee development of a competent sequel.

Snookies12606d ago

Black was the pinnacle in my opinion. I adored TM1 and TM2, for sure. But Black brought it to a whole new level of awesome.
