Is OnLive All Hype?

Sean Lowery: "I recently had the unique opportunity to try out the newly-launched cloud gaming service called OnLive. For those of you unfamiliar with the service, think if it as playing a game that is running on another computer over the internet. So it is kind of like playing a game through a glass window, except what happens in that window is recorded and anyone online at the time can watch you play (and give you a thumbs up or a thumbs down). You also can take that session and resume it from any PC or Mac that you use."

yeah good luck onlive.i know your unusable in all but 3 countries in the world.sweden, usa and japan.

i know in rural britain ull be lucky to get 8mb dl speeds with a monthly cap.

Pandamobile5858d ago

8 Mbps is more than enough for OnLive. You're only required to have a 5 Mbps connection for 720p gameplay.

SOAD5858d ago

It's still pointless.

sid4gamerfreak5858d ago

I wouldn't say its pointless SOAD, it definitely has a point and an ambitious goal. The fact that companies r trying things like this is great. The purpose of onlive is great, in my opinion.

FanboyPunisher5858d ago

Dude we get 50MBPS in Canada, 25 for mid range prices.

Tons of countries can use it if we have speeds like this here, our telecom industry is shit.

KingKiff5858d ago (Edited 5858d ago )

In Australia the fastest is an 8mg connection and that is in maybe 50% of the country, all the rest of us get a 1.5mg connection no matter what (unless you want dial up)

I AM JELOUS

EDIT: Dude you tele com businesses must be better than ours lol, average price is around $120 a month for 20gig downloads at 1.5mg. We get ripped off hard here.

FanboyPunisher5858d ago (Edited 5858d ago )

Ouch!! Yeah Im shocked to hear that.

CBC always reports how shit and crap our industry is compared to the USA, and the rest of the world.

I'm paying 69.99 for a 25/1 with 125GB cap connection.
Its like 100+ for a 50/5 with 195GB cap.

We get ripped off HUGE compared to the USA when it comes to Cellphones (3 Year Contracts..), our internet is getting better though. This service literally just came about the past 2 months.

I dont know the exchange rate, whats your minimum wages down there?

MAR-TYR-DOM5858d ago

Your first comment almost killed me. LOL internet cost here are way too high. Also, onlive will need a bigger bw cap then 125 gb. BTW you should look into techsavvy

I came away fairly impressed. The response to commanded movement on most titles was spot on - with the exception of AC2 - and I was able to have a good time. They generously let you demo the games and watch others playing to help you decide if you are truly interested.

Overall, those with heavy duty gaming rigs need not apply, but those looking to game on a laptop or underpowered, older PC should really consider OnLive.

I went in doubtful but came out rather impressed.

mortalrage5858d ago

I agree, currently playing around with it, except I didn't have any lag problems.

Deathracer5858d ago

How do you get it? I went to the website but couldn't figure out how to download it. Seams interesting.

OneSneakyMofo5858d ago

Were there 32 players in a single room playing with you?

El_Colombiano5858d ago

It wouldn't matter at all. All you're getting is a video stream.

tplarkin75858d ago

It sounds impressive. This could be revolutionary. Speed and latency will only improve. Nintendo, MS, and Sony have to be considering a buyout of OnLive. It is a real threat.

hazelamy5858d ago

maybe from a technical standpoint onlive might be impressive, but a free demo is one thing, wait till they ask you to buy games you will never own, that they will hold hostage and that they will stop you accessing anyway at some undisclosed point in the future.
then you might be a little less impressed.

Its a great idea.

loslonelyman5858d ago

I agree with the author of this OP. If you have an alternative,360,ps3,pc...then no need for this. When i travel my laptop and ps3 are with me,so why would i need this. Cool idea, but doesn't better the other options out there as currently configured IMHO. Wireless option, might help it in competing in the market place sooner.
