Valve's Failed Experiment: Steam on Mac

Several months ago, there were some people who took apart the Steam beta client and found hints that there were files that would be related to a Mac version of Steam. Then there were some viral images flying across the net that hinted at Valve’s popular digital distribution networking coming to Mac OSX. Finally, the popular game platform Steam has come to Mac but so far, it's left us feeling deflated.

I have a macbook pro, and i am a big apple fan, but i completely agree that apple should at least give the user an option to switch to other drivers. It could even have both loaded and make it a switch in the preference pane. "hardcore graphics mode" or something

JsonHenry5801d ago

Fail? Seriously? Less than six months in and it is a fail? This article is fail.

ColdFire5801d ago

I know, so far Valve have been pretty good on this, some driver support would help.

sikbeta5801d ago

Windows Fanboy maybe? Idk, I only know that it's too soon to say something like that...

sikbeta - read the article, he's a pure-bred mactard. Try reading before you comment.

It runs just fine on my MacBook pro. Ya, of course I am hungry for more titles, but these things take time. Other than that, Steam on Mac has been great. I play on my Mac regularly now because several of my games Purchased on Steam on PC are now playable on my Mac.

Expecting zero kinks and tons of games a month into the service is Unrealistic.

Steam on Mac might not be perfect, but as MONTH old service it has been great. Thanks for giving me Portal for FREE, Valve, my Mac, PC and I appreciate that!

beardpapa5801d ago

heh I like steam on the mac. So far I'm anxious for more of the indie games and hopefully the new Civ when or if it gets ported.

ikaris5801d ago

I guess what the author fails to realize is that valve is in it for the long hall. Those old ass games they have ported are still great to play, but have well past earned their development cycle $ many times over.

By bringing quality games to the mac, and a platform for others to do so, valve is going to dominate the apple gaming market.

But yeah, its too soon to tell if that will actually happen, and this author is flamebait.

I don't think it has failed, Valve's push was to bring their catalog to Mac, and they have done so with more coming, also checking hardware stats, over 8% of Steam users are using MacOS, which agrees with Mac market share compared to PC.

The biggest problem with Mac gaming is DirectX, OpenGL is viable, but its been long pushed aside since DX 9.0c.

HarryM5801d ago

At least give it a chance... They've just started porting games to the MAC..

silkrevolver5801d ago

.. but now that future Valve games are going to be on the PS3, I guess it doesn’t matter much to me.

zireno5801d ago

Same here, I have both a pc and a mac, but my pc is a desktop and my macbook pro obviously a laptop and is great to be able to have games like portal and half-life on the go. I'll just have to decide which games I'll be getting on pc/mac and which ones on PS3.

Mista T5801d ago (Edited 5801d ago )

I love steam for Mac, I have a Mac and a PC but my PC is a little bit on the older side, so if a game is a bit more spec demanding I'll play it on my Mac, but if a game is a bit less spec demanding I'll play it on PC for mods and stuff

SteamPlay FTW! :P

Nugundam00795801d ago

Why do you have a pic of Ohpra and the words killzone under it? I actually chuckled!

silkrevolver5801d ago

I was in a KZ2 clan called “Oprah’s Book Club.” We rocked shit.

mrv3215801d ago

LOL BSOD.

I've NEVER had to restart my laptop because of an error... Ubuntu 10.04... CONSTANT updates which are quick and seamless. But hey... I'm glad your taking the side of the underdog with the Windows OS in the minority... OH WAIT.

Vicophine5801d ago

Uhh, no actually, I run Arch + DWM. So stop assuming things, you idiot.

Steam Deck Launch Delayed

According to Valve: “The launch of Steam Deck will be delayed by two months. We’re sorry about this—we did our best to work around the global supply chain issues, but due to material shortages, components aren’t reaching our manufacturing facilities in time for us to meet our initial launch dates. Based on our updated build estimates, Steam Deck will start shipping to customers February 2022.”

Totally understandable given the current climate, but also a big blow for hype for sure. I would not be surprised if there was a further delay down the road, given how unpredictable assembly lines are at the moment.

0rbital711642d ago

suits me cos i cant afford mine till after xmas haha

Teflon021642d ago

Literally what I just said out loud lmao. Mine was Q1 it said already. But this just makes it perfect for me if the earliest is Feb, mine will probably be April or later which is outside all the releases I care about

VenomUK1642d ago

It's understandable as all manufacturers are supply constrained of components. It just means that 2022 is going to be SO stacked!

roadkillers1642d ago

Why do people always say "current climate"? What are the origins of this highly corporate statement?

ActualWhiteMan1642d ago

Current Climate is 45 degrees Fahrenheit where I am HBU? 🤣

Sgt_Slaughter1642d ago

Just felt like using it, works for the context of the situation

blacktiger1642d ago

ikr, people are brainwashed

blacktiger1642d ago

oh lord this guy believes in climate bs

AmUnRa1642d ago

And some people dont want to see the truth and are brainwashed and think there is nothing wrong with the climate and dont want to see al the signs that indicate that there is defenitly a change in the climate worldwide.

blacktiger1641d ago (Edited 1641d ago )

by listening to others is not truth, seeing for yourself is truth. But people are used to so called television and media oh yeah and government but not with their own eyes ever! That's a hard fact. Ice melt, and you all believe it. Volcanoe hit and you all believe it, this has happened even in the Bible so what climate change for 10, 000 years?

Fishy Fingers1642d ago

Year on and we still cant easily buy consoles or GPUs. No surpised.

Orchard1642d ago

That's a bummer, but only 2 months, and understandable given how unpredictable HW is right now.

phoenixwing1642d ago

Disappointing but not really surprised. I'll still be waiting and keep my pre order

Eonjay1642d ago

Feburary seems to be the month everything is releasing now.

Si-Fly1641d ago

Until the next round of delays 🤣
