OXCGN's Thoughts - Did Microsoft Win or Lose?

OXCGN:

"While E3 has finally come, and gone, OXCGN has taken some vids during the days as we headed both to and from the event where we discuss the various aspects of our own daily impressions of the event as it unfolded for us personally."

Belgavion5822d ago (Edited 5822d ago )

Now that a few days have gone by I'm a bit more tolerant of what was shown at MS's press conference. Although I still think there was far more Kinect than there needed to be, they are indeed trying to sell a new product and this was the place to do it.

GrathiusXR5822d ago

That they lost plain and simple... They had the chance to steal the show but the XBOX 360 S wasn't enough to do anythign for them..

The damage had been done the moment that they went to Kinect titles.. If they had at least a decent Kinect titles like SONY did with Sorcery that was at least fun looking and took great advantage of the tech it would of been different.

Either way I'm disappointed that they did what they did in the format they did LOL... Ah well E3 2010 here we all come!

beans5821d ago (Edited 5821d ago )

Why is Kinect on everybody's mind? MS has done a hell of a job gaining market notability. Thanks to fanboys and media they are not only the center of attention but sales are also picking up. Sure I don't have links and I'm going off hear say but then again it's quite obvious after following the net. Good job MS but dang you for not giving us games we didn't already know about. Hopefully they listen and redeem themselves at Gamescon.

ryuzu5821d ago (Edited 5821d ago )

Well when it comes to consumer products, not all publicity is good publicity.

In Europe Skoda cars are pretty nice now, but their reputation from the early years still means they're viewed with disdain.

Kinect is going through a difficult pre-Natal period (pun intended). The problem now is that no matter how much MS manage to fix it up, the damage is done - everyone has the same opinion that it is broken tech and MS seem powerless to stop the bad articles appearing.

This of course is only for the people who follow gaming closer than normal - but those are the people that start the viral marketing and get a product known through word of mouth.

That part of MS marketing campaign for Kinect is faltering...

Superfragilistic5821d ago (Edited 5821d ago )

All the hardcore reaction to Microsoft's emphasis on Kinect this year proved just how well they've been treated over the years by Microsoft. Now they're whinging like spoilt brats because, shock horror, they realise that hardcore gamers are only a fraction of the market and they want to do something about that.

And anybody who says Move was better, I'm sorry but you either weren't at the conference or you're as blind as Ray Charles drinking Kevin Butler Kool Aid. Developers were publicly panning it in hotels and parties, and my own hands on left me greatly disappointed and surprised that Nintendo's motion plus remains superior.

Kinect has its problems, but Move is a waste of time.

XboxOZ3605821d ago

I have to agree with you there. I spent time with a tech developer who traveled there especially to check out the different motion units.

His hands-on with each was, in his words, average at best. But with regards tp the Sony Move, he even discussed it with Sony Game Developers who admitted they were NOT using the capture camera, and simply using the Accelerometer and gyro for the controls.

He was able to simply block the Ball and twist the hand by using his wrist, and was able to do whatever was needed on the screen.

That's from someone that has no bias whatsoever. Some developers presented their Move and Kinect games very poorly, some did a great job with their game because they had 3 yrs to work with it.

I find it difficult to understand how many gamers can say things when they were not even there.

Hallmark Moment5822d ago (Edited 5822d ago )

I think most media and plenty of gamers see it the way you're seeing it.

This was my opinion from the start. Get Kinect out there so the casuals can see it in a casual way that will appeal to casuals. Microsoft took a hit at E3 trying to get people interested in the 360 and will follow up with what the core base wants to see.

Trying to win over some of the Wii casual base was the goal and trying to please the core fanbase(hardcore) would be a poor way of doing that. Of course hardcore gamers are hardcore because they play all games/genres spending a lot of time and money on gaming. There is this new thinking that hardcore means you only like two or three genre's of games which is BS.

Microsoft is getting the pay off they were seeking as we speak.

Inside_out5821d ago (Edited 5821d ago )

M$ set out to inform the world that they have a new add on for there Xbox 360. It worked. That was there main objective and they succeeded.

M$ wanted to show that that Kinect was different than the Wii and the Wii HD Move. They did that and more. The only problem I see is the lack of a killer app. Your shape from Ubisoft looked great, The MTV dance game looked awesome, Kinectanimals should sell alot, the 360 voice commands looked interesting, the whole video chat was great with the ability to share movies...etc with friends. It had alot of things to show different abilities. I think as developers get use to the tech ( only out a year ) and the software continues to develop, it will only get better.

The rest of the show was great as well. Gears stole the show for me. 4 player co-op, new everything. Just incredible how Epic keeps raising the bar...ALL IN GAME. MGS looked great, Black ops looked good and timed DLC for 3 yrs could be big. Fable looked like Fable 2, still good and out this year. Of course Halo looked incredible as well. So crisp and clear. 4 player co-op, firefight and multi-player and out in 12 wks. Crytek making an exclusive 360 game good be huge. New xbox looked awesome.

The show was solid. People wanted more games. They are coming, just only so much time and most games are releasing ( 2011 n beyond ) in the future. You have to pick and choose. Right now, the casual gamer and getting the 360 into as many homes as possible is job one. With that in mind, 360 had a great show.

What would of made it amazing...well, a killer app would of helped. The whole circus thing failed to ignite imaginations like it was suppose to. Where is Milo??? Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux was kinda quite this yr, he says Milo is ten times better than last yr and will show it at GDC. New xbox is expensive, at least more than I thought it would be. Kinect costing $89.99 alone and bundled with new xbox for $299...November will be d-day.

BTW...Sony's was worse IMO...TV commercials to show products...PS3 on Coke products...really, Say you'll show New games for move and then spend 15mins demoing Tiger woods. Kevin Butthurt talking like he represents all gamers ( embarrassing )..Twisted metal looking like a PS2 title. C'mon now, that was not a good show. Sorcery was the best thing they showed. $399 for the PS3/Move bundle, No PSP2, Pay on line...Buy a new TV to play future PS3 3D games...maybe one of Sony's WORSE.

Nintendo...worse graphics EVER, I have a Wii...same game play over n over...3Ds, please, costs as much as a console.

ryuzu5821d ago

Actually there was far too little Kinect than there needed to be. What we saw was a ton of video, with people trying to mime to it.

What we would have liked to have seen for a product hitting stores in 4 months, was the product working.

I think there's no doubt MS made a giant miscalculation at this E3 - the question isn't whether they lost E3, but whether they've just killed the 360 product line.

r.

Convas5821d ago

It's not like MS didn't have games to show, I KNOW they do, they just spent too much time on Kinect. And it's because it's new tech and they want to demonstrate it. That's understandable for me now. Now next year should be a different story.

By June of 2011, MS should be either nicely settled into the Motion Games Market, or failing miserably. Either way, we can expect/hope that next years Presser will be 60-70% dedicated to the Core gamers.

The xbox slim is going to sell like hotcakes.

I'm thinking of trading in my xbox for a slim.

The main reason is I don't have the JASPER chipset.

Moonboots5822d ago (Edited 5822d ago )

I asked around over the weekend at a few places and all were sold out.

I'm still waiting for Kinect bundle prices but seems like people are snatching up what is out there in my town.

Greywulf5821d ago (Edited 5821d ago )

Look at the E3 showing. Theres always this association that more sales = more sequels and games, but thats not the case. Microsofts sales did absolutely nothing for the 360 owner @ e3.

While other companies, that sell less consoles in only (Npd) manage to output gaming content. As a investor, great..as a gamer.. i'm happy sales isn't the only thing on the table.

HurstDarkStar5822d ago

how did a company lose to an audience that it wasn't targeting? they clearly said that they were gonna market this to a bigger user base, so i ask again did they lose something they weren't aiming for to begin with it?

Superfragilistic5821d ago

Exactly. Well put and bubbles. I think that's what the OXCGN guys were talking about in the videos.

I mean I was at the Natal/Kinect event and it was fucking weird, but totally made for a non-gaming TV audience.

Microsoft was thinking far bigger than E3 this year.

BadCircuit5821d ago

The kinect and the Xbox Slim is what I am looking forward to. I like how you don't need a controller for the kinect but I hope it is done well.

I want the Xbox Slim because I have a 2006 model Xbox 360 and it has sadly died on me so I want to upgrade now to a slim that I hope has gotten rid of the problem of RROD.

Godem5821d ago

MS and their elephant failed terribly.... Nintendo won simple as that.

gaminoz5821d ago

Only Nintendo still rely way too much on their cast of cartoon characters. Besides their 3DS (which is interesting but perhaps a bit flawed (analogue on same side as dpad, 3D effects not always great, and both small and bulky) there wasn't much new.

Goldeneye is great but would have been better on the 360 with a wireless controllers rather than a wiimote or wired controller on the Wii.

Plus there is the technical difficulty they had with Zelda.

To be honest I don't think any of them impressed that much, really- or failed. MS, as stated above, was not really going for the E3 media, though why they chose E3 to target newbies is strange.

Superfragilistic5821d ago

Nintendo did win and yet I can't help but feel a sense of deja vu with the hardcore reaction with Microsoft. Remember how the hardcore behaved when the Wii was announced... look how quickly things change.

Nintendo was planning to refocus on the hardcore all along and you can bet Microsoft will do the same, but probably in half the time (2-3yrs).

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio29d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing29d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9229d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit29d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing29d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9229d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay31d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn231d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn231d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown31d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay31d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay31d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac30d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger31d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300031d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde31d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde31d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_30d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
