Square Enix "still talking with Microsoft" on FF14 for 360

The Producer of Final Fantasy XIV has told RPG Site that his development team and the company are still in talks with Microsoft regarding bringing the Square Enix MMO to the Xbox 360.

NegativeCreepWA5824d ago

I think there's something a lot mmo devs are not saying about MSs Live polices for mmos. Which is strange since FFXI and PSU have are already on the 360.

We keep hearing the same thing from every one that's making or has tried to make an mmo for the 360.

AP5824d ago

I think at the start of the gen MS were a lot more desperate for content. Now they're not so much, so they're forcing devs to play by their ridiculous, OTT rules...

ShinMaster5824d ago

If they're already in talks, that almost means it's happening.
Microsoft's got the money and SquareEnix will take.

The only thing in the way is MS's dumb closed ended XBL policies.

zag5824d ago

It won't happen look at APB it was slated for everything then they dropped the PS3 now have dropped the PC and now it been in dev for the last year or 2 and still has no release date.

I reckon it's canned they just don't want to say it.

blitz06235824d ago

don't really care if it's on 360. MMOs are usually better on PC so if I can run it then I'm getting the PC version

JAMurida5824d ago

I personally want to see FFXIV on 360 as well, since it' an MMO and the more people who can play it the better. Though, I don't want to see FFXIII Versus go on 360, but that's another topic...

No Way5824d ago (Edited 5824d ago )

Uh, I think APB was at E3.. I'm pretty sure.
And, I'm pretty sure it's only on PC, no x360.

Though, I think they jus put off the x360 version.
I believe they are working on it after the PC release.

PiTCHBLaCK5824d ago (Edited 5824d ago )

You my friend are very wrong, I'm beta testing APB on the PC right now, so you are wrong.

Just the download of the client takes a very long time, so I stopped the download, I'll wait until I have more time to do it.

Eamon5823d ago

Ahh who cares about this MMO. I was never going to play it anyway.

More interested in FFvs13

It is more that you can't disk swap in an MMO. PC it works because you have to install all the data on your HDD. I think it is more of a hardware limitation that Square and MS are trying to overcome.

maxcer5824d ago

lol, you should research shit before you plan to discuss it. FFXI required you to install the game to the 360HDD to play it. it said this clearly on the game packaging; "Hdd Required to play". the only reason the disc was needed for play was to stream the sound track.

Philaroni5824d ago (Edited 5824d ago )

@maxcer

I played FF11 on the PS2 so I did not know that was the case, no need to be so aggressive about it. Even still I'd expect FF14 to be much larger in size so my point could still be valid. The game could very easy be over 20Gs in size which is the size the avg. Xbox owner still has.

+ Bubbles for correcting me.

zag5824d ago

Normal size for MMO's for me is between 8 and 12gig even after the newest updates.

How ever if the dev isn't too crash hot you'll get something like Age of Conan and it'll be around 50gigs before the 1st expansion is even out.

MadMan005824d ago

Most people have 20GB? I'm the only person that I know that has 20 GB Hard Drive, lol. I don't download anything to my Hard Drive I'm gonna upgrade when ever I need to, I still have 11GBs. Though if this comes to 360 I'm gonna upgrade for sure.

maxcer5823d ago

@1.3.2

same deal i think, the requirements might be over 20BG and the only people who will be able to play are the 60GB+ users with a broadband connection.

personally i would get FFXIV on PC anyway for mod support and performance. the only reason i got ffxi for 360 was to play when i was out of town. but i have a capable laptop now so i don't take the 360 on the road anymore.

AP5824d ago

By the way, a fun point - FF14 actually started production as "Project Rapture" - and that was PC/360 only. PS3 version came later, and 360 version was dropped.

Rainstorm815824d ago

Dont expect this title until Fall 2011- early 2012 at the earliest...if this hold true

Kamikaze1355824d ago

It it comes out on the 360, it won't comes out till 2011 for the 360 only. It's only coming to PC and PS3 in Fall 2010. It was already announced at E3 and SE were trying to bring it to the 360 since it was officially announced.

Kamikaze1355824d ago

A while back after Final Fantasy XIV was announced, there were rumors that it was going to the 360 as well. However, SE mentioned that something about their game goes against Microsoft's policies and they had to try to work a way around it in order to release it on the 360. I believe they were trying to work with Microsoft to find a work around.

They said exactly what it was, but I can't remember what it was.

that an mmo in xbox live can easily get people hooked to them thanks to Party Chat feature(WHY? because EVERY GAMER ON LIVE have a mic) and then those xboxlive mmo gamers will start ignoring those other games on xbox 360 and its going to affect the devs really hard and also the other thing is that an xbox live year+1FREEmonth subscription cost $35-$50 NOT REALLY THE BIG PROBLEM HERE.

There is people playing THE OLD FF11 on xbox live HELLO!!!

R6ex5824d ago

SE didn't even release an FFXIII version for Asian Xbox gamers.

I'm not buying another SE game! Liar!

Digitaldude5824d ago

Lol then why do they announce "It will be PS3 exclusive!"
Everything SE says is rubbish, I'm more interested in Versus anyway.

punkpop1015824d ago

Eversince all the other Final Fantasy games jumped to other platforms you ps3 fanboys jumped in the conclusion that god hitted you in the face and you now just want Versus more.Hahahaha ps3 are trols , orcs and who knows what.

Consoldtobots5824d ago

you summed it up Digitaldude, SE has pretty much destroyed their business reputation with these moves. NO agreement with them is binding, NO contract is binding (they can be sued for this) and ultimately only care about getting their software on as many platforms as possible regardless of the sacrifices made for that to happen. They are destroying their own work out of greed. F EM.

8thnightvolley5824d ago

this seems to be the case from most mmo devs its actually MS that stops some titles and services from coming to xboxlive.. i.e

bbc iplayer, ffxiv

way too strict xboxlive policies.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio31d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing30d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9230d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit30d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing30d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9230d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay32d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn233d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn232d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown33d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay32d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay32d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac32d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger33d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300033d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde33d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde32d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".
