SCE President Downplays 3DS Tech

Andriasang: Speaking with Sankei Biz, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai downplayed Nintendo's 3DS goggle-free technology, citing its lack of precision as a limitation. In an interview conducted at E3 on the 16th, Hirai told the site, "Based off internally conducted research, naked-eye 3D for portables does not have high precision, and at present there are limitations."

if people are expecting this to be the same quality 3D as sony's stereoscopic displays.....don't get your hopes up

-Alpha5844d ago

Well why would it, it's a handheld.

Still, I'm impressed with the concept. Good for Nintendo, I will always appreciate their reputation in the handheld market.

Rainstorm815844d ago

I agree They literallly created the market....I think the 3DS is a great idea and cant wait to see how effective it is as i cant even wrap my heaqd around the fact of a 3D handheld.

@1 As far as comparisons go its not really fair. Price range or Tech

evrfighter5844d ago

In other words SCE president is bashing his head against the wall because as much as it seems Sony is pushing 3d. They didn't do it first.

Bobbykotickrulesz5844d ago

So Alpha-Male, when are you going to share some of your bubbles with me?

Stop being greedy, bro. Remember who held your hand all those late nights puking into the toilet.

Iamback5844d ago

this is sad news since everyone seems to beblown away by 3ds

I don't know why Sony would be hatin on the 3DS, considering there's quite a high possibility that 3DS owners might end up expanding the audience that owns 3DTVs. If they buy a relatively cheap product (Compared to the TV) they may want to try the obvious evolution, being a more powerful console that uses more advanced tech.

Nathaniel_Drake5844d ago

Actually Sony did say that, I forgot who but there was an article that said that Sony is glad for the 3DS because it well help them usher in 3D for their products

Cheeseknight285844d ago

Well that's a relief. I don't think I'm going to be rushing to buy a 3DTV any time soon, but the 3DS is absolutely a first day buy. Right now I'm honestly not that sold on 3D yet (Buying the 3DS for the games), the movies I've seen with it aren't impressive (Missed Avatar). Hopefully the 3DS and some other games that Sony has in the pipeline will sway me over. A 3D Jak or Ratchet and Clank would likely show off the feature better, at least for me.

nickjkl5844d ago (Edited 5844d ago )

sony said nothing

people from sony say things

but sony says nothing its basically a company with people who voice their opinions

psycho3605844d ago

They also downplayed Wii see what happened to it.

SOAD5844d ago (Edited 5844d ago )

When Aaron Greenburg was downplaying 3D for the home console market, he was an asshole.

When Sony PR downplays 3D for the handheld market, they are making good points.

To me it says that both Microsoft and Sony are trying to downplay features they don't have.

Microsoft can't replicate Sony PS3's stereoscopic 3D.

Sony can't replicate Nintendo's 3D handheld.

Monk3y5844d ago

its a known fact that Stereoscopic 3D is way better effect than a handheld

BISHOP-BRASIL5844d ago

No need to call people out like that Monk3y, not cool... Also BOTH are stereoscopic 3D - different images per eye.

And despite the headline, SOAD, Kaz didn't even downplayed it. He was asked about 3DS tech and he said what he saw in Sony's own R&D, that the tech for 3D without glasses isn't as effective as they want it to be right now. He didn't say it isn't needed or that it's lame, like MS PR used to say about HDMI for example.

Nathaniel_Drake5844d ago

Except that Sony is marketing 3D and Microsoft isn't.

Raf1k15843d ago

Actually Sony probably can replicate it. Remember that Sony is a tech giant and has miost likely been working on the same kind of 3D tech that's used in the 3DS which is why Kaz's comment was based "off internally conducted research".

TruthbeTold5844d ago

It may not be a full living room experience, so in that way it can't compare, but it a great experience, and a relatively cheap one, so it is pure win. Sony will score major points by selling 3D TV's and whatnot to a relative few for alot of money. Nintendo will sell a crapload of cheaper handhelds to the mass market. Both will win in their own ways. That's how I see it anyway.

tiamat55844d ago

Whether it true or not don't bother telking anyone that. No one has seen full games on it or seen how Nintendo will use this tech properly for gaming and people are already praising it to high heaven. So don't waste you breath Mr Kaz Hirai. When it comes to gaming tech everyone believes only what they want to believe and close their eyes so they don't see obvious and glaring faults and put their fingers in their to block out logic.

labwarrior5844d ago

RIGHT SONY ? Missing color is BETTER ??

hahahahaha, i am NEVER going to use 3D with glasses, not ever

saint_john_paul_ii5844d ago

sounds like you havent tried it yet.

Rainstorm815844d ago

Yea cause i went to see Avatar in theaters with the Glasses and it was Black and white like Sin City....... -_- /sarc

Monk3y5844d ago

you, sir are hilarious :DDDDDd

IHateYouFanboys5844d ago

as dumb as labwarriors comment sounds, i agree to an extent.

i WILL NOT buy a 3DTV until you dont need glasses to see the 3D. 100% will not buy one. i dont care how great the fanboys will claim that the Sub-HD-3D killzone 3 is, i dont care how great the motorstorm demo is in 3D - if i have to wear glasses to watch it in 3D on the TV i will not buy a 3DTV. call it shallow, call it stupid, call it whatever - i dont care. im not wearing special glasses to watch tv.

the technology to do 3D without glasses is already there, and im not paying $3k for a tv that is already outdated and makes you purchase expensive unnecessary glasses.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8553d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele53d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla53d ago (Edited 53d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk52d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay52d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10153d ago (Edited 53d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit52d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg52d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10152d ago (Edited 52d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14953d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle66d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker66d ago (Edited 66d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit66d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog66d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_66d ago (Edited 66d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog66d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad66d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_66d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage66d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda66d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS78d ago (Edited 78d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.
