Grading E3 2010: Microsoft lost, Nintendo won

EX: "At E3 2010 in Los Angeles, California, the biggest video game developers and publishers held press conferences to show off the latest and greatest in video game technology.

Some, like Nintendo, revealed new hardware. Others, like Electronic Arts, focused more on a strong line up of titles that will be coming in the near future. But which of these video game titans showed up with their game face on, ready to dazzle and impress, and which of them probably would have been better off staying home?"

I agree with the title. Microsoft lost, Nintendo won, and Sony kinda fell somewhere in the middle.

WildArmed5867d ago

I don't know who was the best.
(it's between Sony and Nintendo for me, but too hard to decide)

But I think Ubisoft and MS bombed this e3.
MS's last E3 was leaps and bounds better than this years IMO.

RageAgainstTheMShine5866d ago

So many games to play on my PS3!

No Way5867d ago (Edited 5867d ago )

I agree, I give it to Ninty.
So many big name games..
And, plus the new DS.

poopnscoop5867d ago

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? MORE of this anti-Xbox crap from this guy? I've said it again and again --he's anti-Microsoft, anti-USA because he's Asian and has Sony and Nintendo's balls in his mouth.

Microsoft won E3 by a mile --what'd Sony have? Stupid commercials and nothing else. What'd Nintendo have? The same crap they always have.

Disagree if you want --you know I'm right.

Biggest5867d ago

But didn't those commercials show upcoming games? What upcoming games did we see from Microsoft? I think there was Call of Duty (but everyone is getting it), Gears of War 3, Fable 3, Halo: Reach, and the new Microsoft/Crytek thing. They were followed by a bunch of shovelware for the Kinect. And not only was it shovelware, it was shovelware that is possible or already done on similar products (products like the PS webcams). I haven't found a listing of all the games Nintendo and Sony showed, but I am 100% sure there were many more. But all in all, you're free to love the Microsoft conference. I wasn't for everyone.

Tyler12105867d ago

Dude, im a 360 fan boy and I still know we lost. There is a line between being a fanboy and being an idiot...

tehk1w15867d ago

I have to agree with the PSP ad. It was HIDEOUS. That said, I still think Sony won. Nintendo's was good but not great.

No Way5867d ago

I don't think it was even a competition.
Nintendo had wayyy more big name games.
Almost all the big name games for Nintendo.
Sony had some good ones, too. Though, not as much.

Biggest5867d ago

I hate to be that guy right now but. . . Big name games? Most of what they showed was a new entry to old ass games. Those games are big to people that grew up with them. But for the billions of people that weren't alive at the time or uninterested in gaming they were nothing important. Please know that I AM looking forward to games like Kirby and DKC. But they don't have the same appeal for most people.

itisa5867d ago (Edited 5867d ago )

Had Sony kept secret of Infamous2,Killzone3,Littlebigp lanet2,Motorstorm3 until E3 like Nintendo did for their games,Sony would blow everyone with all of it.

Imagine seeing Killzone3 in 3D with jetpacks right after you heard about it.
Imagine seeing Littlebigplanet2's total overhaul for the first time.
Thing is,Nintendo keep a tight lip until E3,but Sony already won it before it's started.

eagle215867d ago (Edited 5867d ago )

Nintendo not only won E3, they made a clear case for how they will continue to win gamers for years to come. :)

sombrero5867d ago

Yeah, all they have to do is re-skin New Super Mario Brothers Wii with all the Nintendo franchises! Next up, Star Fox!

ABizzel15867d ago

I completely agree with you. That's what I've been saying. DK and Kirby games are nothing but New Super Mario Bros. with a slight twist.

Epic Mickey wasn't as impressive as people are trying to pretend it was.

Kid Icarus looks great, 3DS looks great, Metroid Other M looks great (even though this was at last year's E3), Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword looks great, Goldeneye looks great. Golden Sun is not my cup of tea, but I won't knock it.

Sony had just as many announcements and surprises as Nintendo which is why I put them both in a neck and neck race, however Sony has more games that appealed to me, and Move actually looks like an evolution to the Wii Mote.

I'm not saying Sony blew the competition out of the water, but based off what I saw they were the best with Nintendo close by. Nintendo had a great conference, because gamers had low expectations and they've been working on this E3 for 3 years, even IGN thinks so.

http://wii.ign.com/articles...

Check the 3rd paragraph.

nocturnal_90s5867d ago

I agree with you. If Nintendo does anything, it's rehash old franchises, but we forget that they are actually good franchises. Sony always introduces new IPs because a lot of them just never stick like Nintendo's franchises have. I don't think many exclusive first party franchises can ever achieve the fame of Mario, Zelda, Metroid, DK, Kirby, Smash, Pikmin, etc. If these franchises are good, why not bring new games for them?

LoaMcLoa5867d ago

Can't argue with this one. And nobody else should.

Boody-Bandit5867d ago (Edited 5867d ago )

What about people that have zero interest in handhelds or the Wii. You know the HD console fans or PC gaming fans.

No doubt Nintendo had their best show in years but at the end of the day this is just someone's opinion and nothing more. The only winners are the people that are soon getting games they want on their console of choice. This whole who won a press conference is a little silly to begin with. Scratch that. It's flat out nonsense that is just used to fuel that console / fanboy wars.

Just like the hundred which will win the motion controller war?
What war?

Either you are a fan of motion controls or you're not.
If you are you will get the one that supports the console you have. If you have more than one you might decide which best suits your needs or just purchase them all. I will never understand this us vs them mentality.

@No Way
Why would I say MS won? Last I checked the PS3 does HD gaming as well.
Those are the two consoles I game on. I thought Sony had a great conference but MS was severely lacking so no, I wouldn't say MS won.

If both MS and Sony had a terrible conference I would say Ninty won but not for me because I don't game on their consoles. At the end of the day this is nothing but opinions. How can they be wrong when it personal preference? There is no facts here.

Aphe5867d ago

The thing is I'm an HD console fan and a pc gamer and I'm looking forward to most of the stuff that Nintendo unveiled. I'm just one person, but I can't be the only one that feels the same.

I think you underestimate how many gamers are like myself. The games are all that matters. I play all kinds, and some of my most wanted include Nintendos offerings, as well as the ps3 and pc offerings.

The Lazy One5867d ago

I am only interested in Maya. Autodesk clearly won this E3...

Boody-Bandit5867d ago (Edited 5867d ago )

I specifically said people that have "no interest in Nintendo or handhelds." Just because my next line read "You know the HD console fans or PC gaming fans." Doesn't mean I thought people that prefer the 360, PS3 and PC gaming have no interest in nintendo products when the line before it clearly stated "no interest in Nintendo products or handhelds".

I am only saying reviews are just opinions and for LoaMcLoa to say no one should argue that is wrong. I specifically said that if you are not a fan of Nintendo at all it's only human nature to not have been impressed by their press conference.

I'm not a fan of handhelds so I didn't care for the 3DS or when Sony talked about the PSP games and their new advertising campaign. I am into HD gaming mainstream so I don't care for the PS2 anymore nor do I care for the Wii. I will be the first to admit I am shallow and I prefer games that look impressive on hi def displays and sound amazing on good sound systems.

Did I knock Nintendo? No I said they had the best press conference they have had in years. IMO their best this generation for them. I use to be a HUGE Nintendo fan but I'm not any more. I know they have some excellent and really fun games but I can't wrap myself around their motion controls, graphics or analog sound.

Again, I am not hating on Nintendo I am merely stating that an opinion is an opinion and not a fact. So of course it can be argued.

Aphe5867d ago

Fair enough, if that is your view on games then I can't really argue with that. You have your preferences and that's fine. And no, your comment on the whole was pretty sound and I agreed with it mostly.

It was just the 'You know the HD console fans or PC gaming fans.'
bit that caught my eye. For the sole reason that I only care about the games at the end of the day, regardless of graphics. Just don't like being thrown in a pidgeon hole because I'm one of those HD console and pc gaming fans and I don't feel the same way.

No Way5867d ago (Edited 5867d ago )

Well, then that's not really fair. With what you're saying..
What about the people that only have an interest in x360?

That being said, then in your case, Microsoft won.
Would you agree with that? I sure as hell wouldn't.
It's not bout what you like, it's bout who did the best.

Ninty did by far, much more big name games. Plus DS.

elpresador5867d ago

.....HOW the crap can you "win" a trade show. Really, this crap should stop as it is retarded and pointless. I mean its not like there is a cash prize or aything to be had. So if there was a winner, what would they win? A cokie?

tehk1w15867d ago

Strong showing at E3 = strong sales when the product comes out.

N3DS looked amazing and got the hype train going, hype that will inevitably translate to multi-million dollar sales come this holiday season.

The Kinect didn't look so hot, and you can bet the negative press and word of mouth will hurt its sales numbers come launch time.

That and it's all about brand development. If you have a strong showing at E3, it's your way of saying, "Hey, look at us, we're the best!" However, if your showing sucks, then it's like saying, "Hey, we're impotent."

Why would publishers and developers want to work for a company that can't manage to put on a kickass presentation?

BattleAxe5867d ago

You sound like you could use a Coke.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle75d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Crazy to think the WII is to the Switch 2, as the NES was to the WII back then. 20 Year difference.

jznrpg80d ago

My wife asks me to bust it out (heh) everyone once in a while to play bowling and tennis with the kids. There was a ton of slop on it but some good stuff as well.

Smellsforfree80d ago

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Loktai80d ago

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde81d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.
