Crysis Was Terrible

Back in 2007 Crytek released their second full game with an assault of hyperbole and marketing. The spiritual successor to Far Cry, Crysis saw people romp through an outlandish Sci-Fi adventure as Nomad - a Delta Force soldier with a super-powered nanosuit.

It wasn't terrible. But it wasn't amazing either. It was decent. The graphics made up for it.

evrfighter5811d ago (Edited 5811d ago )

Crysis was the game that made pc gamers realize that graphics aren't everything. We expected a gaming revolution. We got a good game. Nothing extraordinary but good.

This pc gamer was humbled by Crysis. No longer do I tie graphics with GoTY titles. Just give me something fun that I havn't experienced before. I like my eyecandy but I still play cs more than other shooters if that says anything. (Also see Portal and TF2)

Currently console gamers are at that phase. "Graphics = GoTY ZOMG!!!"

Arnon5811d ago

Yeah, not at all. I'm hardly able to sink over 20 hours of gameplay into an FPS, and not even be finished with the story.

N4g_null5811d ago

evrfighter HD console gamers are getting close to that point also. Some thinks it's already happening which is the main reason why MS and SONY went all motion control gaming happy.

Conloles5811d ago

Pfft yeah it was hell bad..... lame article is lame

darthkai5811d ago

"There was no art direction past "Jungle, grass, beach" and, later, "ice". It was pretty, but it was also boring and monotonous."
Yeah, I here Hawaiians complain about beaches and palm trees all the time...
WTF kind of comment is that? That's like complaining that GT5 has too much asphalt in it. Or that Mario Galaxy has too many levels in space...
Anyway, Crysis remains to this day one of my favorite games. A lot of people don't get that, as a sandbox game, it is only as fun as you make it. If you only focus on killing enemies and don't take the time to experiment, then you probably won't have a lot of fun...

Tempist5811d ago

I'm sorry, did any of you actually play the game?

Crysis was a trash game with a pretty outside. It was bad. He's right; you did basiaclly play the entire game with a silenced, scoped assualt rifle. The story was shallow and crude. The Aliends did make the entire game suck.

Go on. Play Crysis again and tell me it's the shit. PC gamers of PC Gamers knew it was a bad game from day -100.

edoman205811d ago (Edited 5811d ago )

Nop it wasnt, and better i still have it installed in my pc since the release

I love the game as i love Far Cry 1

This game pwns too much

snp5811d ago (Edited 5811d ago )

Going to agree with evrfighter on this one.

It was a really pretty game, and i thought it was probably above average in gameplay (like it more than many/most shooters), but it didn't excel or feel 'new' like a Half Life 2 or the better of Nintendo's staple games (or the classics on the PC - Warcraft 2, Lucasarts graphic adventures etc) or what have you. Just a good game, good enough to maintain interest, with gorgeous and system destroying graphics (at the time) it's big selling feature.

For every blogsite review that criticizes a game, there should be a review of that review.

JsonHenry5811d ago

It wasn't the best FPS ever, but it was a good game and NOT terrible IMO.

The thing about opinions though? They only mean something to the person that expresses them.

BattleAxe5811d ago

Finally an article that speaks the truth. I'm tired of PC fanboys claiming that games like Crysis and the original Far Cry are some of the best games ever made.

thor5811d ago

No, PC gamers are tired of people who think they are being rebellious by taking a great game with fantastic production values, and calling it terrible.

I sort of understand why people have the feeling that "graphics aren't everything THEREFORE any game with great reviews AND great graphics can't be as good as people say it is" but the fact is that's simply not true! Do you honestly think that a professional reviewer, having PLAYED and ENJOYED a game, would give it a 9/10 just because it had great graphics? No, they wouldn't. They would give it a 9/10 because it's really fun. There's no way if it were terrible that it would get such great reviews.

Motion5811d ago

I gotta say, crysis was a fun game, nothing really wrong with it. But when the first Far Cry came out before that, it thought it was one of the most amazing games I have played.

Tempist5811d ago

@ Thor:

What production values? The Engine for the game was fantastic and the writer says so. What he's slamming is the rest of it: story / gameplay / ect.

PC gamers like to date pretty girls (games) but they want to date pretty girls with some depth or at least something more than always talking about how pretty she is.

Marceles5811d ago

lol @ disagrees, clearly alot of people haven't played Crysis, the game was incredible. If you hate Crysis, you must've almost hated the first Far Cry which was another incredible game.

If you guys have any reason other than:

"it costs 1 million bucks to play it!"

"Crysis was ok...but Killzone 2 OMGGGGG" (this is 3 years ago people...the game was freakin amazing and still is)

"Eh...not bad but the animations sucked" (yes the animations weren't all that great and thats a dumb reason for not liking a game in 2007, but the facial animations were sick for its time)

People that hate this game have a short term memory I guess...most people didn't have a rig to run it when it came out so they wrote the game off completely.

ryuzu5811d ago (Edited 5811d ago )

Ok it wasn't terrible but it also wasn't a great game to play.

That article spends the first half page whining about the requirements - well that's an aspect of PC gaming we all deal with and given that Crysis looked nice even with reduced settings shouldn't be held against it.

However, it is fair to say that while Crytek delivered a nice engine, the game itself wasn't the best use of it. It was pretty easy to play through the whole thing with the just the stealth and the silenced rifle (except for the weak bits inside the alien ship).

The suit - they key mechanic of the game - was also the thing that killed any excitement in the game.

I'd have liked to see a "normal" shooter - ideally FarCry 2 would have used that engine, or a game along those lines.

Anyway, now the Cryengine is almost on us with a bit of luck Crytek will just work on the engine and let others generate the games.

Bereaver5811d ago

Whoever is agreeing, fanboys of either side, Crysis WASN'T terrible. It wasn't the best gameplay out there (but it was fun), but the graphics were amazing. Crysis was FAR from terrible.

Don't let these PC fanboys get in the way of gaming's truth. Don't stoop to their levels. Judge a game without bias.

ryuzu5811d ago

I think it's the PC "fanboys" who want to make Crysis into a ground breaking revolutionary game (that it isn't) given it is a PC exclusive.

r.

iamgoatman5811d ago

So all those people who disagreed with you actually played the game in full and thought it was terrible? Like hell they did. I'd be half of them hadn't even played it.

Aphe5811d ago

It's quite funny how many disagrees people have got in this topic. I'm willing to bet most of the disagrees come from people who haven't even played the game and own a game that starts with K and ends with a 2.

sid4gamerfreak5811d ago

no it wasnt. Angry console fanboy anyone?

Nihilism5811d ago (Edited 5811d ago )

There are more disagrees than there are PC gamers that visit this site: therefore PS3 fanboys are full of $#!+...why single them out, because 360 fanboys don't rag on crysis.

I have lost count how many times i've played through crysis, and I certainly didn't play through a 15hr campaign a bunch of times just for the graphics.

Epic game in all forms, 9/10 in all categories, from sound to gameplay to graphics...

dktxx25813d ago

Terrible is an overstatement, but crysis never had anything but graphics. bad ai, level design, art style, everything else that makes a good game. i still would say killzone 2, uncharted 2, gears of war 2 all looked better that it, too, because they had much more interesting artistic styles and color pallets.

2late5813d ago (Edited 5813d ago )

yeah. Because every time when someone mentiones an interesting color palette gears of war and killzone 2 come to mind.

You console fanboys are pathetic.

The level design was good, the AI did its job, the physics were fantastic and the gameplay is far better than all those games you mentioned.

Go check some reviews. It didn't get a score of 91 on metacritic for nothing.

The author of the article is simply a dumbass and his opinion is not shared by the reviewers nor the millions of gamers who enjoyed it.

dktxx25812d ago

ya because i think crysis was overrated that means im a console fanboy. even though my favorite series are starcraft ,warcraft, civilization, diablo, and the pc versions of fable, tes, fallout. ya i love the pc, but crysis still gets way too much attention. way better pc games than that. i would think you would be using those games to pad your ego.

2late5811d ago (Edited 5811d ago )

@dktxx2: the fact that most of your comment fits the cliche console fanboy response is why I labeled you in such a way. I mean you're using using gears of war 2 and killzone 2 as examples for game s with interesting color palettes. Can you taste the irony here?

da305kratos5811d ago

bro, quite honestly you have no idea what you are talking about...

bad level design??? the point is to give you and objective and you complete it any way you want! stealth/rambo/etc

bad AI? dude play it in hard where the bad guys actually talk Korean and dont show up on your radar

bad art style?!?!? it is trying to be photorealistic, nothing wrong with that

oh and that last part where you are defending the carrier, was bad@sss...

I have a ps3 and PC (Phenom X4 3.0 Deneb and a Sapphire 5750) with those specs and crysis at a higher resolution than those games, you shouldn't even compare....

bet then again, i'm a kratos fan so i put God of War/all

pr0digyZA5811d ago

I personally loved crysis. I finished it 3 times and each time I played a different way whether it be stealth or run and gun etc... the graphics were awesome even on my 8800 i can max it (although I'm only on 1280x1024). in 2007 this was one of my best games.

@dktxx2 don't get so offended by what someone says because that just makes it seem as if what they said was true.

dktxx25811d ago

i'll say this, the most beautiful game i've ever played was okami. beautiful art style, gorgeous. Not high-def, not a gpu whore, but it was amazing. and okami will look good forever. in 10 years, crysis will look horribly outdated..

textures, resolution, aliasing, all mean very little, because they all improve with time, and that makes the old look bad. a great art style however looks good forever.

windwaker, diablo 2, dragon quest 8, mgs4, all these game shave distinct looks all their own that beat the hell out of crysis, gears, uncharted, or anything else.

@ dktxx2

Damn you dktxx2. Now you've pissed a PC elitist. <_<

Independent_Charles5812d ago (Edited 5812d ago )

i own a 360 and its safe to say no game surpasses the graphics of crysis. but i found the gameplay not as fun as those titles mentioned above IMO. i got a brand new gaming pc for shogun 2 cant wait :)

coolman2295811d ago

This article is right. I played Crysis on a friend's computer (he's a computer guy and built a powerful computer) and the game slowed to something like 16 fps a lot. I remember playing and being disappointed that I couldn't do a super jump with "Maximum Speed" or couldn't be a ninja effectively with "Maximum Stealth." The gameplay wasn't interesting, and we ended up playing CoD: MW2. I've always been surprised about all the praise that Crysis got.

da305kratos5811d ago

i built a midrange PC back in Jan of this year with a 5750 ($120) and get between 25-40 fps with v-sync off and 4xAA at Level 4 CCC which gives the game a very high look with a high performance...very few times did it jump down to 15 for a sec (maybe 3 times the whole game) and thats including the alien battle on the ship at the end...

Also, its part of the realism that the nano suit though powerful is limited...if it wasn't that way, you wouldn't be able to die since you would be superman pretty much...

and to say you went back to MW2, are you seriously a gamer?!?!?

BattleAxe5811d ago

BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH......Yeah he said MW2, what are you, the True Gamer Police?

da305kratos5811d ago

lol good joke with the gamer police thing....

I would have agreed with him had he said Modern Warfare 1...

just giving my 5 cents BattleAxe, relax....

so much fun, i hope they make a vr mod for crysis 2 / 3 too!

This is amazing. This is the direction VR should go in to boost adoption. Since I have beaten every Crysis except 1, this is now a good excuse to correct that problem.

Crytek Wanted Crysis To Be "Future-Proof"

According to Crytek CEO Cervat Yerli, "I want[ed] to make sure Crysis does not age, that [it] is future proofed, meaning that if I played it three years from now, it should look better than today." Yerli and the team designed Crysis' highest graphical settings for the PC hardware of 2010 and beyond.

While Crytek has officially announced Crysis 4 is in development, nothing new has surfaced. For now, gamers' only way to scratch that itch is to play the Crysis Remastered Trilogy available on PC and consoles.

OG 2007 Crysis (not the remastered weirdo), is & will forever be a legend amongst the PC community.

This video will always be impressive to me, even for years to come. Some things here are better than games we have today, OG crysis is the best version!

OG Crysis physics, man ... amazing! Thanks for the reminder!

PrinceOfAnger482d ago (Edited 482d ago )

Looks really nice with VR mod too

FinalFantasyFanatic483d ago

I'm still shocked that it looks as good as it does today, puts some modern games to shame.

I thought the remaster was fine tbh some rough edges at launch but after some patches it's decent

isarai483d ago

I mean the lighting and physics still hold up extremely well. I still revisit it from time to time.

RedDeadLB483d ago

That CPU performance thing is preventing it.

isarai482d ago

Yeah unfortunately Crystek's decision to bet on the linear progression of clock speed in CPUs was derailed by the unforseen shift towards multicore CPUs. It just wasn't built with that in mind because that wasn't even in the conversation at the moment

DivineHand125482d ago

I remember when I tried to play Crysis with my Intel Pentium Dual core E2200 @2.2GHz , 4GB ram and GeForce 9400gt. I was a kid back then and that was the best I could do. I would get about 15 to 20 fps. When I over clocked the CPU to 2.8GHz I would get about 40fps. The experience wasn't good at all and it was the only PC game I could not run back then unless and put the settings on low. At that point the game went from cutting edge graphics to PS2 graphics. To this day I haven't completed the OG Crysis. I was able to complete Crysis 2 and 3 after building a new PC when I got my first job.

HyperMoused482d ago

Never played it, worth a try you think?

Profchaos482d ago (Edited 482d ago )

Worth a try just because it's the only game that lets you pick up a turtle on the beach and throw it at enemy soldiers that should have been a back of the box feature.

But nah seriously unless you're nostalgic for it I'm not sure if it will hold up

Crytek went so overboard on the Crysis tech and sent devs to photograph leaves in Haiti

"The shader work that came out of this was mind-blowing at times."

RaidenBlack495d ago

Amazing, often misunderstood
The dumb AI was deliberate, so that the players can explore and experiment with the world and all the features.

vTuro24495d ago

It really is. Most people only remember it for its graphics but the gameplay was equally amazing.

RaidenBlack495d ago

Hope they try to pour nearly same amount of dedication to the new Crysis 4

DefenderOfDoom2495d ago

Well worth the extra work ! I enjoyed all 3 Crisis games and would also love a new one .

JunonZanon495d ago (Edited 495d ago )

Still wish game development was overall this passionate and minutious about their projects. Obviously, there are still some great studios as exceptions.

LikAChicken495d ago

I’ll never forget Far Cry 2 and the amount of details they packed in.

Yea there were some issues with the gameplay loop and the sickness aspect but you could tell they really tried to nail details.

DivineHand125495d ago

I haven't beaten the first Crysis but I did play Crysis 2 and Crysis 3. I know some PC players were annoyed by the last 2 games being developed with consoles in mind but I believe it was an improvement. I had a great time with Crysis 3 to the point where I believe it was too short.
