Wii vs Move vs Kinect: We All Lose

from DAMNLAG.com:

"With the Wii selling faster than the Bible, and with Microsoft and Sony trying their hardest to duplicate its success, it’s now a perfect time to compare the Big Three’s motion control peripherals. With a generation headed in a new buttonless direction, “whose the best” is starting to become the only big question."

boogeyman9995805d ago

This will get the fanboys going....

Lawliet5805d ago

A gamer such as myself had yet to lose anything, or will be losing any with motion controls. Exactly Who is the "We" he referring to?

sikbeta5805d ago

I don't lose Anything, I don't have a wii but I tried and I hate what they did to Zelda, Liked RE:UC and everything else was like "fun" for 10 minutes or so, I don't have a x360, so I'm not gonna spend $300 for the console + $150 for the kinect add-on, I have a PS3 and I can [Choose] to Buy Move or not, I'll buy it but it's not like the introduction of motion-control gaming on my console of choice will affect my Gaming Experience...

frjoethesecond5805d ago (Edited 5805d ago )

It's amazing how the first comment makes lite of the fanboys and yet the fanboys still bite and flame everyone who doesn't agree with them. Just wait. In an hour there'll be a ton of people making asses of themselves despite what we just said here.

yess5805d ago

You know what?
I am actually starting to think, it's the hardcore getting jealous on the casual, for getting something they might like. And the fanboys love to spin it...

I did try to see the point of this article, but i think i failed.

deadreckoning6665805d ago

I like the title. It speaks the truth.

BldyShdw5805d ago

I'm not going to lose anything with move, with games like Sorcery and Socom 4 for the hardcore.

Let me try with Kinect.

I'm not going to lose anything with kinect, with games like Water Rafting and Kinectimals for the hardcore...........naw, doesnt work

Aphe5805d ago (Edited 5805d ago )

Sorcery = Hardcore?

So....

Harry Potter = Hardcore?

forcefullpower5805d ago

I actually think sorcery looks great fun. On my list to buy with move when it comes out.

ChickeyCantor5805d ago (Edited 5805d ago )

" I actually think sorcery looks great fun."

The same is said about casual games by casual players...
Do you understand where im going with this or do i need to explain it to you?

GamingForever5805d ago

yeah, they all have downsides now...

Nakerman5805d ago

Looking forward to Kinect, should be interesting.

Mastersnake105805d ago

Kinect sucks without a controller. Agreed.

seinfan5805d ago

Motion controls suck, period. Agreed.

renegade5805d ago

Im going to stick up with my controller F*ck motion controllers.

Nihilism5805d ago

It's funny seeing all the support for motion control now that it's coming to PS360...but for the last 3 years we've heard: "Wii is for grandmothers, motion control is a gimmick"

dredgewalker5805d ago

Apparently there are millions of grandmothers out there :)

frjoethesecond5805d ago (Edited 5805d ago )

The difference IMO is the lack of hardcore games on the wii. Deadspace extraction, Metroid and the COD games worked well. They just need more horsepower IMO.

@dredgewalker
There are 100's of millions of grandmothers out there.

dredgewalker5805d ago

Lol.....i think i may also be a grandma cause i also own a Wii.

seinfan5805d ago

I still say it's a gimmick. It's disheartening to see a huge number of gamers suddenly shift paradigms. It may be a response to the impending doom that this is where the industry is heading. Motion controls may just become the standard and when/if that day comes, I'll either move to PC or give up gaming altogether.

dredgewalker5805d ago (Edited 5805d ago )

It won't happen and i think you're underestimating the relationship between a gamer and his controller.

Edit: @ Raztad
me too, one of my bubbles magically disappeared and i don't think i've ever been rude to people.

rezzah5805d ago (Edited 5805d ago )

No one is trying to take over the gaming industry with complete motion controls. Seems like everyones afraid of a little change, and that change doesnt completely change everything. Meaning controllers will always remain and motion will never tak over. Unless our tech is so advance itll make the controllers loook like they were from prehistoric times. Obviously we are hundreds of years away from something like that, so people shoudlnt get so worked up about something thats so young.

We barely touched the capabilities of motion control, let alone mind control if ever possible.

Mista T5805d ago (Edited 5805d ago )

it was the software not the controller itself, ps3 has the games to back it up

raztad5805d ago (Edited 5805d ago )

I was not sold on the motion control idea, till I saw Socom 4 played with MOVE back in GDC 2010.

I think MOVE will be great for shooters and games that require precision. It seems Move can be used like a mouse, you dont even need to point towards the screen.

OFFTopic: Good job on taking down one of my bubbles dudes. I'm noticing many PS3 owners in this site are all going down in bubbles.

@bellow

Thanks man. +1 to you too.

LightofDarkness5805d ago (Edited 5805d ago )

Just fanboys, mostly.

Edit: ah I don't really mean that. Sorry raz. Have a bubble :)

Why o why5805d ago (Edited 5805d ago )

the wii became synonymous with super casual games especially the proportion of those compared to core games. Its lack of real accuracy also tarnished motion controls. I have a wii so i think im allowed, like many others, to highlight its shortcomings. The reason people loved the wii's e3 is mainly to do with the core games they announced.

Im not sure about kinect but Move looks like it will cater to both sides with a higher percentage of games for the core fans than either the wii or kinect. The devs are implementing it so i cant see why they would stop. IF you're a 360 fan you may be pissed as ms dont have that many studios to spread the load of core and casual games development.

LightofDarkness5805d ago

True, I am looking forward to seeing what can be done with motion controls when the target audience s by and large comprised of core gamers, so I will be investing in Move. That Sorcerer game had me intrigued.

kewlkat0075805d ago (Edited 5805d ago )

While 360/PS3 fanboys jibber jabbered about consoles wars we underestimated Grandmas and Grandpas....apparently.

Nintendo kept quiet, while they smiled at the sales numbers monthly.

Nihilism5805d ago

"lack of hardcore games"

What does that even mean, define what a hardcore game is....

99% of exclusives are as main stream as they come, I don't know what you think is hardcore but ALL shooters are mainstream and marketing hype. The only games that are not are horror games and different types of games like mirrors edge...something that you don't see every other day, and by that definition the Wii is definitely hard core because the games they are putting out are different to the I.P's that constantly get milked on the other console's.

I am not saying that it is a good or bad thing, but I will say this, I sold my Wii because it was lacking in games I liked...

Most people buy a platform because it's associated with a Title/Franchises/Genre that appeals to them. Today gaming has becomes too polarizing and putting everyone in categories. It's a lot like US politics these days.

When you do have a share of people that enjoy a little bit of everything.

Colonel-Killzone5805d ago

You can't talk about other consoles milking anything when nintendo is the expert at milking your doing the double standards now -_-. What games they put that is different seriously How many mario games and also zelda metroid etc have they had over the years ? Not saying they are not fun but they surely milk their titles dry and always get a free pass when it comes to debating about them especially mario.

pippoppow5805d ago

Yep. Wii was garbage and PS3 six-axis useless. Now it's amazing and interesting. Let's see what type of games come out for the HD motion control consoles.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio12d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing11d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9211d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit11d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing11d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9211d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8514d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele13d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk13d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay13d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10114d ago (Edited 14d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit13d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg13d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10113d ago (Edited 13d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14914d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay13d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn214d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn213d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown14d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay13d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay13d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac13d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger14d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300014d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde14d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde13d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".
