Move over Killzone and Crysis, Rage is here

Vincent Hammett of PlayerAffinity.com wrote: "The next big benchmark was set by Killzone, which had great graphics and... well that's about it, but it sure did look pretty. With both of their sequels being shown at E3 this year, they're still stunningly good looking games, but are they at the very top anymore? No, if you ask me. Id's Rage has clawed its way to the top. So far, it's the nearest we've come to the coveted "Pixar quality graphics" look." Gameplay video of each game is provided in the article.

Hahahahaha! Damnit I needed that. Thanx playaffinity. LOL!

FangBlade5825d ago (Edited 5825d ago )

Good to know it's running better and more stable on the PS3 version:
http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

And Killzone 3 makes both of them look like last gen.
Take a look @ 0:58 in the video below, best water effects I've ever seen.

callahan095825d ago

God damn, watching that Killzone 3 footage in 720p just really shows you how beautiful the game is. It's stunning. Can't wait to play with that jetpack. Looks like a lot of fun.

callahan095825d ago

OK, how is it off-topic when I comment on a Killzone 3 video that somebody else posted? Especially when Killzone 3 is one of the games that this article is about!

Fishy Fingers5825d ago

Look like last-gen? Really? Killzone looks phenomenal, but Crysis and Rage are also 2 of the best looking games on the horizon.

Last-gen...

SOAD5825d ago

That's an article from May 4, 2010.

iD must have felt that the 360 version was more stable a few days ago if they decided to show off that version at E3.

beans5825d ago

Don't believe the hype until we've seen it up and running. The only thing that amazes me id that Rage as expected just crapped over any and all my console is greater arguments. This is the king for years to come.

frankymv5825d ago

Crysis 2 and Rage look nice,

but NOWHERE near as good as Killzone 3.

Not even close.

ToastyMcNibbles5825d ago (Edited 5825d ago )

that video of killzone 3 looks gorgeous! judging from how much killzone 2 improved visually towards the end of its development cycle i cant imagine how good killzone 3 will look by next year... on a side note has anyone watched that motorstorm apocalypse gameplay? the game is insane!

Dance5825d ago (Edited 5825d ago )

http://meodia.com/article/2...

meodia says rage was being shown off on the Xbox 360. 60 FPS on what had to be the best looking multiplatform game I've ever seen. Did not experience any hiccups, any frame tearing or any slowdowns.

arakouftaian5825d ago

since they show it behind doors for vip people.
but i play Killzone 3 in 3d few times and it looks mindblowin and many part of the game are photorealistic!!!

And the game is full of acction and fun to play
the level of the Jetpack it amazing!!!

PoSTedUP5825d ago (Edited 5825d ago )

rage looks great, from what i saw... i dont see the big deal. am i blind or something? KZ3 looks realistic, the gun in rage dosent look that good, the character models looks awesome and the lighting is amazing but over all i dont see what everones talking about. crysis2 looks better then rage and crysis2 and kz3 are close to eachother, i have to play them all though i guess, this is just my opinion from what i saw so far ok.

No Way5825d ago (Edited 5825d ago )

Good for that.. get it for the PS3 then.
I didn't care for Killzone 2, althoughhh
Killzone 3 looks muchh better, to me.

I'm liking this game, it appeals to me more than those.
And, would much rather pick this up, than either of those two games.

Rage is more of my style, however.

crazydrummerlad15825d ago

wow that video fangblade posted wit kz3 in hd jus blew my mind. sorry but kz3 is still king

UnwanteDreamz5825d ago (Edited 5825d ago )

God I hope it looks better. I'm tired of only my PS3 exclusives pushing my consol. It's about time someone catches up. I'll reserve final judgement for when I actually play it, unlike some other people on here.

PoSTedUP5825d ago

true that unwanted. ima wait till i play them for final judgement

didnt like the first crysis (gunna giv #2 a chance)

i will definatly love RAGE more then most games

KillZone is just the most intense with the most chaos going on on screen at once, with some of the best if not the best visual, so take that into consideration too. sure a game can look great if the screen is really empty most of the time. : P thats why i give a lot of credit to crysis2 also.

Hallmark Moment5825d ago (Edited 5825d ago )

LOL you dig up old quotes from statements made during the time the devs supposedly had the PS3 version running better yet they were showing off the 360 version at the time and at E3. Devs say that to please PS3 fanboys. If that were true why not show the better version? LOL

Devs talk up the PS3 to get PS3 fanboys to buy their games they invest so much in. LOL you take a quote explaining the progress of each version a while back as proof of the PS3 version being better and ignore the action of the developer showing of the worst version at E3? by worst I mean the best LOL

Lawliet5825d ago (Edited 5825d ago )

I'm curious about all these amazing RAGE, so I take a little peek at the video, and from what I'm seeing the game does look stunning. However, to go as far as to say it looks better than KillZone3 or Crysis2 is pretty much subjective. There are however still many question left unanswered. Like if Rage could perform the massive destruction of KillZone3 by maintaining at that 60 frame rate, or would there even be scenes of massive destruction? From what this video shown, it had yet proven to be so to make up a conclusion that this game stance among the top of Killzone3 and Crysis2.

zeeshan5825d ago

@Hallmark: Yeah and imagine how amazing it'll look on PS3 if it is looking good on Xbox360! Killzone 3 is hands down the BEST fps this gen. Errr, wait! You wouldn't know cuz you ain't got no PS3 so... nevermind!

getonmylev3l5825d ago

at first glance rage looks like borderlands

Conloles5825d ago

This is gonna be awesome in 1080P with more than 4XAA - only on PC

Skizelli5825d ago (Edited 5825d ago )

Why is it that all the KZ3-related comments only talk about graphics? Looks don't mean shit. Any one of these games can lack in the gameplay/story department. As for first impressions, KZ3 looks more FUN than KZ2, RAGE's animations look incredible (plus id has never let me down), and I like how Crysis 2 is in a domestic environment. CryTek isn't known for making games with stories, but we'll see.

@zeeshan: How is KZ3 the best FPS this generation when you haven't even played it yet? Did Kevin Butler tell you this from the future?

Jessewb5825d ago

For any other idiots talking about showing the "better" version of rage at e3, the version that is shown has nothing to do with being better or worse.
To give a fine example, Crysis would never have been shown on 360 and just on PC or even on ps3, because the 360 version is the lowest of the 3, or I remember back when Criterion was showing burnout we also saw the 360 and yet the ps3 version was the better version.
So just think and don't act like dim witted idiots, we have enough of those already.

Spenok5824d ago

Damn, its video's like this that really make me remember how amazing KZ2 was, and how amazing KZ3 will most definitly be. KZ3 definitly looks better then the competition but to say it makes Rage and Crysis look last gen is a bit of an overstatement. I can just only imagine what these games look like in 3D, man i need to buy one, and soon.

talltony5825d ago (Edited 5825d ago )

But I believe crysis 2's graphics are a little overhyped though still really good. I am insanely impressed with rage and kz3 but I believe kz3 will have more detail in it thx to bluray. I believe more space allows for more details to be put into the game. Just my opinion people but the environment in kz3 looks crazy detailed.

seij5555825d ago

id said they would take advantage of blu-ray so you never know but I still think KZ3 looks way better than Rage.

Ju5825d ago

One thing I notice in Rage. No particle system what so ever. Minor smoke, no bullet impact renderer, no destruction (like shoot at the pillar - no impact). But huge environment, cristal clear image, great scope.

DARK WITNESS5825d ago

in my opinion they are all very good looking, but they all have different things going for them.

The thing about Crysis is it's trying to do everything; have the great graphics, sandbox environments and destructible environments.

Rage has it's massive open world.

Killzone is a lot more linear so it can afford to focus more on details, it has some destruction, but I would not say it's the same level as crysis or badcompany etc.

so it's a trade off between the 3.

Of the 3 I would say crysis is the one I am most skeptical of. but thats more to do with it's story etc.

I played and owned killzone 2, I didn't think much of the campaign at all, thats my honest opinion. I am looking forward to killzone 3 more for it's multiplayer.

Rage is the game I am looking for a great single player experience.

pixelsword5825d ago (Edited 5825d ago )

@ DARK WITNESS:

How do you associate "linear" from what you saw from Killzone's clip? Linear basically means "a straight line"; so unless you're talking about the flight sequences, that's kinda grasping for straws if you're talking about the fact that you can't go from one board to, let's say the last board. Even in sandbox games you have to work in a linear sequence for progression in terms of objectives to move the story along (since you're not a pilot, that's a rather moot point to make, since you're not a pilot in Crysis either for your drop points; plus you didn't get to fight on your way down there, and you may not be piloting anything at all in Rage).

At any rate, I'm looking more for the trade-offs between the three.

I haven't seen enough of Crysis or Rage to see if they'll have particle effects like Killzone already has, and I'm kinda doubting that they might have it, since even my favorite 360 game, Halo: Reach doesn't have any in significant amounts. Environmental particle effects are nice, but even Resistance 1 had that plus level-wide particle effects; I hope that the 360 version won't hinder the other two graphically, but since they already cut out a faction plus said that they will all be the same, I'm not holding my breath that this game will beat a PS3 exclusive in terms of graphics... but you never know.

DARK WITNESS5825d ago (Edited 5825d ago )

@ pixelsword

I don't even know where to start so I am going to try and not go off on one.

We all know what "linear" literally means, and the context to which we use the term when we are talking about game design or level design.

Are you trying to tell me you class killzone as a sandbox game ?

there is no game with a story that is not linear, even sandbox box such as GTA, Saints row, Infamous, AC...you name it, they all have linear story progression which is broken up by boards or moving from one board to the next, but they are called sandbox/open world so obviously when I say linear I am not talking about the story progression. what makes games like Rage, GTA, AC, red dead, open world ? ... Killzone is Linear compared to crysis and rage, Resistance was linear. You can have big open levels and still have a linear game. Resistance had huge levels which you could physically see, but your own movement through the levels was still very limited and fixed, Farcry 2 on the other hand was a sandbox game. the overall story was still linear but the world in which this took place was sandbox.

The only games that don't tend to have linear story progression are RPG's but even then most RPG's have a central/core story that still progresses in a linear path. just the overall story can be broken up by side missions or multiple paths with in the story.

I don't see how pointing out the fact that killzone 3 is more linear ( note i didn't say it was totally linear, I just said "more" linear then crysis and rage ) is grasping at straws. I have owned killzone 2, resistance 2, Farcry 2 etc. I am not pointing it out trying to be a fanboy. I intend to buy all three games.

John Carmack is the Best. Idsoftware is always meant to keep benchmark in gaming. I mean in the old days what game was able to beat Quake 1 for next 3 years until Quake 2? Doom 3 man still looks awesome! This game will demoslish any fps

tinybigman5825d ago

everyone fight over this? i personally think all 3 games look outstanding and guess what ill buy all 3 because

1 i loved KZ2 so getting part 3 is only natural
2 Crysis 2 looks great and i'm intrigued with what ive seen so far
3 Rage reminds me of Borderlands and i love that game.

in the end i love games and all 3 have a place in my collection.

pixelsword5825d ago

"The next big benchmark was set by Killzone, which had great graphics and... well that's about it, but it sure did look pretty"

The last mistake you'd want to do is put the words "ID" and "storyline" together if you want to be believable. Wow; I can't believe they actually went there.

sikbeta5825d ago

Sure Rage will look great and Obviously Crysis too, but when it comes to PS3, KZ3 will Blow up Everything....

popup5825d ago (Edited 5825d ago )

What a paranoid world we live in!

Even if you do want to really compare 3 games that are literally on 3 different planets then are we talking artstyle or technical competence?

Killzone is full of mayhem. The whole scene is alive, dirty, animated and analogue.

Rage is very pretty (well outside it is) and has great artstyle with massive, colourful textures.

Crysis sort of has elements of both.

If all 3 are good games then buy and enjoy all 3.

R6ex5825d ago

Look at the amount of things happening on the background of Crysis - its unbelievable! Rage has static background while Killzone looks bland.

arakouftaian5824d ago

its amazing the 3d tech in Killzone 3.

Rage looks fantastic, will be nice to see the Crysis (looks to be the best of teh three), Killzone, and Rage go at it for best visuals.

I guess we will see rather soon.

Kurt Russell5825d ago

Id always have good engines - Rage looks more fun to me.

R6ex5825d ago

Yup. To me, Crysis 2 looks the best.

jmmurillo865825d ago

ID has been away for too long, I don't think they can catch up Guerrilla+Sony and Crytek+EA in their first try. We will see anyway.

deathstriker5825d ago (Edited 5825d ago )

If you look at the full article you'll see Rage being played. From that I think Id still has "it". I actually think this might be their best game, since their other ones are just going from point A to B, Rage actually looks ambitious. It's a close race between it and Crysis on who has the best graphics, it's Rage by a hair right now IMO.

SOAD5825d ago

Jon Carmack, the programmer behind the Id-tech-5 engine, builds space rockets in his spare time that rival NASA's rockets.

He invented ambient occlusion on consoles. I don't doubt his genius.

And you all need to understand. RAGE is running at 60 frames per second.

Just for the hell of it, imagine what RAGE would look like at 30 frames per second with double the amount of polygons on each frame each second.

I believe that rivals Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2, from what I have seen of RAGE on consoles.

peowpeow5825d ago

What in your comment are people disagreeing about? Discuss people!

thewhoopimen5825d ago (Edited 5825d ago )

Great question peowpeow.

I think i disagree because SOAD forgets to mention how blurry all the environmental textures of RAGE looks upclose. RAGE seems to literally only have 1 LOD for the environment. It looks great from afar, but not so impressive upclose. As someone else also mentioned, the particle system seems rather minimal. Watch when they blow up the tower in the video.

There's alot of corner cutting in order to achieve the frame rates even WITH Carmack's reputation as a gifted programmer. I would agree 100% with SOAD if he said that 99% of studios wouldn't be able to display the level of detail RAGE has with a 720p 60FPS Open world goal in mind.

However, he is contending that it is comparable in detail with # of particles, lights, polygons displayed onscreen to Crysis 2 or KZ3... something i would heartily disagree. The people at Crytech and Guerilla have both been lauded as the best of class. Their goals respectively have been to fill as much onscreen detail as much as possible without FPS or openworld constraints.

DARK WITNESS5825d ago

@ peowpeow

they can't discuss, they are hating for hating sake. They will hate on anything that is a threat.

snp5825d ago (Edited 5825d ago )

It runs 60fps, but only when nothing is on screen atm. Have a look at the turning and movement when pretty much any characters appear - it's noticeably more jerky. In fact the two video's i've seen the bloke controlling is very very careful to slow down and be quite cautious in the way he moves when around characters; suggesting he's aware of it to.

Franky, it's not the polygons that worry about this game - though the models do feature noticeably less, and the environment is very much corridor (even outside it's sort of 'rocks corridor') - so much as the absolute lack of any on the fly lighting or environmental effects. And 'those' are the things which kill performance.

I'll give them props for their texture tech - that is very cool - but that aside no way is this doing as much at a variable 60fps (with dips, or at least some sort of evident problem when characters are on screen) as Killzone 3 is at 30fps. I actually think this looks like a more fun game (i like the gameplay variation), but if you put Killzone 3's geometry and effects into this version of Rage, i seriously think it'd be running considerably slower than Killzone3 does atm.

I'll wait and see the PS3 version of Rage - maybe there's more lighting and other stuff going on that would make the 60fps (when it holds it) more impressive than Killzone3 running doing so much more at a steady 30fps - but as it is i'm just not feeling it. People can think that's fanboyism or whatever they want, but it really isn't. I'll call a spade a spade, but Rage just looks too sterile and empty atm for me to be cheer-leading it.

seij5555825d ago

Thank you! Finally someone intelligent for once! From what we have seen of Rage, it was very closed corridor with no effects, baked lighting, and some animation issues. There was some noticeable jarring. The only thing I really took from the gameplay so far is that the textures look amazing but that is about it. KZ3 has a lot more going on with dynamic smoke, particles, lighting, etc. I'll reserve my judgment of Crysis 2 until I see it running on PS3.

Hotel_Moscow5825d ago

yeah that was what im talking about im watching these videos that people are saying is the new console graphics king and i cant believe the 360 is doing this at 60 fps and im looking at the videos trying to find out why

There's too many games to choose from

No Metal geat solid 1,2,3,4?
No Resident evil?
No Silent hill?
No Midnight club 3?
No NfS Underground 2?
No Final Fantasy?
No Burnout 3?
No Dragon quest 8?
No Days gone?
No Ace combat?
No Tekken/Soul calibur?......
just from the top of my head

PS1 era was full of great RPGs, PS2 was racing generation i would pick top 200 and even that would be just a fraction.

FinalFantasyFanatic550d ago

30 is way too low over the entire history of Playstation, I just wouldn't be able to narrow it down that much, I would pick 100 at least.

Storm23550d ago

Yeah...really odd list. I get that it is personal preference and I love most of the games listed, but my list would definitely be different. I agree though, it would be incredibly difficult to come up with just 30.
