Microsoft's Kinect for Xbox 360 is Doomed to Fail

John C. Dvorak of PCMAG: Renamed the Kinect at E3 this week, the product formerly known as Project Natal isn't likely to be much more than a neat gimmick.

talltony5821d ago

Ever since that smoke and mirrors e3 last year I knew it wouldn't be much. I hate smoke and mirrors.

table5820d ago

yeah a lot of us saw the problems with kinect right from the get go but the gaming media kept telling us how incredible it was and how it would change gaming. Finally they are coming round and the realising how little kinect can actually offer. It has some cool features but is flawed with an overwhelmingly poor execution.

I read some people saying that the casuals will still lap this up, I disagree. Word of mouth gets about of the problems it has coupled with poor reviews around the media. The casuals will then way up the options; an expensive 360 with kinect or a cheaper family friendly wii with mario. The wii wins and kinect is long forgotten.

AngryTypingGuy5820d ago (Edited 5820d ago )

Kinect is more advanced than the PS3 Eye Camera. All MS needs to do is make a peripheral like Sony's Move to be used with Kinect. They probably won't though, but they should so Kinect can be used for more hardcore games.

Kinect will be popular among the kiddies. I think most people on this website prefer the good old controller.

AngryTypingGuy5820d ago

To the people that disagree, I'm pretty sure that I know which part of my statement you're disagreeing with so...tell us how the PS3 Eye is more advanced than Kinect. I'm not talking about Move, just asking how Sony's camera is more advanced than Kinect.

Parapraxis5820d ago (Edited 5820d ago )

http://www.youtube.com/watc...
all for just 49.99$

lol

People can say it's much more advanced yada yada, but when it doesn't appear to be any better than PSeye it really doesn't matter.
Watch that review, PSeye is surprisingly accurate.

badz1495820d ago

they used smoke and mirrors this year too! all the actors all 'controlled' by their avatar on screen!

AngryTypingGuy5820d ago

Well yeah the PS Eye is accurate, but it's not the full body peripheral that Kinect is.

hahahah Good old John C. Devorak! XD I love the old coot. He's already complaining about the noise. lol

Imperator5820d ago

Yes it is. MS is too unfocused.

halojunkie5820d ago

kinect is a terrible piece of hardware in my opinion. and it will fail.

outrageous5820d ago

Kinect is already a hit. What is this guy talking about. House shaking? . People will get tired using kinect? But it might be fun to use when people come over. This guy is very confused. Does he like it or doesn't he.

Ubisoft, in their own presentation, gave a glimpse of the immense potential for Kinect. You will be hearing alot more in the coming weeks.

Serjikal_Strike5820d ago

Is the one you all have been waiting for

"SOULJA BOY DANCE GAME"

lmao

AAACE55820d ago

Most of us all said the Wii was doomed to fail as well. I doubted Kinect when it was first announced, but you never know what people will be attracted to. So we can't really judge it until it's out.

JD_Shadow5820d ago

The casual audience didn't have a system to go to before the Wii came out, either. Nor will it be easy for the casuals to connect to Kinect (no pun intended).

The landscape is much different NOW than it was THEN!

Chug5820d ago

Also aren't going to spend $150 plus the price of a console to casually game either.

DaCajun5820d ago

So they are trying to steal casual gamers from the Wii. Look how it worked for them when they tried to steal iPod user with the Zune, they fail miserably. The iPhone users with a windows phone, another failure.

Heisenberg5820d ago (Edited 5820d ago )

And MS thinks with enough money, frilly distractions and juuust the right amount of clever deception they can pull one over on the ignorant long enough to turn a profit. It's the kind of corporate mentality that plagues and preyes on our society.

secretsea5820d ago

Where are all the "motion control/wii" is a fad articles that once popped up everyday??

zorglub5820d ago

The differences are numerous :

- the Wii is already there, who will buy a second one to play less and worse games ?

- you can play Wii while sitting, not Kinect

- Wii doesn't cost 450 $ (Xbox + Kinect)

- Wii doesn't have a 150 ms lag

- you can make core games with Wii or with Move, not with Kinect

- Wii lineup has both shovelware and core games, Kinect only has 15 shovelware (Move has 31 mostly core games at launch).

Kinect is the most epic failure since Virtual Boy.

Nihilism5820d ago

No it isn't motion control is the future!!!

Just look at Move, I mean it's controller design is nothing like the Wii motes dual control setup...oh wait

Well I guess innovation really is dead, kudos to Nintendo for taking the risks to keep the gaming industry moving along, shame on MS and Sony for trying to steal a slice of the pie

Heisenberg5820d ago

And there is no shame in innovation, it's what moves things forward. If you can't see the fundamental differences between the devices, then shîtty buzz for you...

With your warped logic, shame on everyone for trying to "steal" a slice of Atari's pie.

It's funny you give Nintendo kudos for moving the industry along and taking risks, when anyone can see the company playing it the most safe, using the oldest tech, and pushing absolutely no boundaries whatsoever is Nintendo.

Dchal, your comments are becoming increasingly stunned, I think you may be having a stroke...

van-essa5820d ago

Reminds me of the Wii in 2006. Which is a good thing for Microsoft.

clintos595820d ago

atleast the wii was working and had games playable that attracted the casuals. unlike kenitic which had all kinds of problems from paid people acting out the movements of a pre recorded video and having lag on the few games ppl were trying out and then cutting out the press and only showing it behind doors to celebrities lol. what more proof do u need that this product is just full of, "FAIL" written all over it. and the sad thing about it, is blind ppl like yourself will prolly help support ms by buying this even though it is a piece of manuer dump, lol.

PLAYstar5820d ago

Finally some journalist who speak from the heart!

SixZeroFour5820d ago

kinect as a gaming device may fail, but as a whole (entertainment device) not too sure, it has possibilities

SublimingMass5820d ago

i just saw Kinect price on eb games web site $198.00(AU). my guess is that retail for US will be $100. can't preorder yet but giving you guys heads up.

http://ebgames.com.au/xbox3...

leeger5820d ago

well i think it will fail in terms of having quality hardcore games, but in terms of commercial success I do believe it might become very successful as long as it is priced right. Imagine your GF seeing that kinect fitness game.

acedoh5820d ago

than the PSeye... It's also going to cost three times as much. I don't see it being popular with any people. The price is going to kill it and Microsoft has not done a good job attracting casual gamers. Their confrence was an example of that. They need to stick to the core market. That has been their bread and butter all these years and it seems to be a money maker. Why does Microsoft have to get greedy and forget about their core market. They should be coming out with a dozen exclusives to keep growing that base. We have no idea how large it can get but Microsoft is crippling that base now by putting their efforts into the Wii crowd.

harv7115820d ago

Kinect is more advanced than the PS Eye, but the biggest difference is the price. Right now you can get a PS Eye for $32 on Amazon. So the PS eye is almost 1/5 the cost of Kinect. If Microsoft did come out with something similar to Move and lets say they can match Moves prices of $80 for a set, then the total cost for Microsoft would be $230. Compared that to $129 for a Move set.

I think predicting if Kinect is going to fail or not is a little premature and ultimately up to the general public. I remember when the Wii was first shown, I didn't think there was any chance if would sell. Wii turned out to be the biggest seller.

I think controlling your console with hand gestures and voice commands are sorta cool, but I just don't see how Kinect is going to be very good as a peripheral for games. But I've been wrong before.

when i read this ((I think the pause button is a hard slap to the forehead)).
and yh its not looking good for MS...btw look at the comments in the site(pcmag) the 360 fans are angry :)

saint_john_paul_ii5821d ago

oh snap!!! its a Doomed article!! this time its for a microsoft product! i must be in an alternative universe!

werent these doomed articles made especially for the PS3?

Godmars2905821d ago

Not talking about the 360 itself, but something that's been "hobbled" together in an attempt to steal some thunder, and install base, from the competition. Just like the HD-DVD add-on was meant to compensate against BR.

SOAD5820d ago

I wouldn't say it was just hobbled together. Today I was reading a Game Informer magazine from 2004 and it had an interview with Peter Molyneaux in it and he was asked about Project Dimitri. Project Dimitri is a code word for Milo and it seems that Molyneaux has been working on this for at least 6 years.

So, it may fail, it may suck, and as usual, Molyneaux may under-deliver, but I believe that Milo and Kinect have been envisioned for a long, long, time.

Godmars2905820d ago (Edited 5820d ago )

Fable 3 will likely tell the tale. If that deliver, then there's no reason to believe that Milo will either.

Natal or no, the game itself just wont live up to its ambitions.

I also say hobbled because of the rather obvious shortcomings that are coming out before Natal itself is. Someone in the MS planning department failed to see the limitations of that type of MC as they wanted something as far away from the Wii so they could call it innovative.

Ri0tSquad5821d ago

I'm sure we'll get a "PS Move is Doomed" article soon.

Nihilism5820d ago

I'm sure you will, and it will be well deserved.

Rainstorm815821d ago (Edited 5821d ago )

I was thinking the same normally usually nothing MS related is associated with failure.

Oh well i guess Gabe Newell said it best

"We are witnessing a shift in the industry"

+bubbles Godmars

perfect compairison HDDVD add on

Edit:

Who wouldve guessed id be quoting something positive from Gabe Newell about the PS3

Robearboy5821d ago

Totally agree and yet look how the ps3 has turned it around! I wont be jumping on the bad wagon of the doomed merhcants just yet, the same people also said the wii was a gimmick

Rainstorm815820d ago

But we are talking about a console vs a controller (kinda).......the sequel to the most selling console in history to a device trying to steal thunder from an existing device (Wii).

It is a stark contrast from PS3 to Kinect.....Add ons die regularly, it takees a lil bit more to kill off a console, just look at the Gamecube.

Godmars2905820d ago

Kinect is being aimed at the casual Wii crowd of gamers. Even if they don't own a Wii they might get 360+Kinect for the new factor with only the help of a massive ad campaign. The only unknown is the price. At $120~180 for the unit alone plus the $300 for a 360 that's going to make it twice as much as a Wii.

zorglub5820d ago

The differences are numerous :

- the Wii is already there, who will buy a second one to play less and worse games ?

- you can play Wii while sitting, not Kinect

- Wii doesn't cost 450 $ (Xbox + Kinect)

- Wii doesn't have a 150 ms lag

- you can make core games with Wii or with Move, not with Kinect

- Wii lineup has both shovelware and core games, Kinect only has 15 shovelware (Move has 31 mostly core games at launch).

MS Kinect is already one of the biggest joke on the net, it'll be an epic failure.

Only MS could fail like that.

oldskoolgamer5820d ago

your right pope those fail articles were once "ps3 exclusive" but it would seem they have gone "multiplatform" see what i did there?

"Of course, Microsoft designed this for families in an environment with no real families: the Microsoft compound in Redmond."

though this article reminds me of all the doom articles that came out after the wii anouncement...

karl5820d ago

"People who develop such things are usually single men with no real thought about how such things will go over in a real family environment"

haha that was funny

Microsoft Gaming Revenue Drops 7% Year-on-Year, Content and Services Down 5%, Xbox Hardware Down 33%

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio24d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing24d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9224d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit24d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing24d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9224d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

gamedeveloper.com
Eonjay26d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn227d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn226d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown27d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay26d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay26d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac26d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger27d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300027d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde27d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde26d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_25d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
