Consensus Around The Web: Kinect Is Failing

Kinect hasn’t been out for one week, but already the a general consensus is being formed. So what’s it you ask? Well it’s not one Microsoft will like.

or Microsoft need delay the launch.

There is one hope for hardcore gamers, integrate Controller and Kinect... but microsoft say "you are the control"...
..so, no controller playing Kinect.

feelintheflow5813d ago

but I know I have read that Microsoft has said some games will be using both Kinect and controller.

eggbert5813d ago

since their entire marketing campaign is

"YOU DON'T NEED THE CONTROLLER! THIS TECHNOLOGY IS AWESOME BECAUSE ITS HANDS-FREE!"

Bigpappy5813d ago

The casuals didn't get to vote yet.

IdleLeeSiuLung5813d ago (Edited 5813d ago )

Exactly!

Of course the hardcore gamers are upset there are no games for me. The majority of the gaming press at E3 is also gaming enthusiast i.e. hard core gamers.

Ask the casuals what they think?

Bathyj5813d ago

Actually, I dont give a f*%k what the casuals think, and if you do you're trying to hard to justify this Kinect.

The day I need verification on whats good to game on from my Grandmother I'm quitting a near 30 year hobby.

If they wanted an accurate name, they should have called it
Stillborn .adj. Failing before or at the very beginning of inception.

RockmanII75813d ago

People on Facebook are loving Kinect, and while I think this is a bad move from the eyes of gamers it could be a successful move for MS. Look at the Wii, doesn't really have a lot of people compared to the PS3/360 in terms of dedicated fans, and yet it still sells like hot cakes. MS is a company and any company's main goal is to make money.

Biggest5813d ago

IdleLeeSiuLung was one of the Natal lovers that swore up and down that Microsoft was making hardcore games for it as well. Now that we don't see any at E3, which is what many of us were told to wait for, he is now a cheerleader for the casual side of things. He doesn't really care about much. He just wants to love his Microsoft. Casual players can do whatever they want. I'm just glad everyone else passed on the Natal. Can you imagine how things would have ended up had Nintendo used it? Is casualer a term?

RememberThe3575813d ago

Thank you. Bubbles. I don't give a shit what the casuals think. They're not gamers, they don't play like I play. If you guy want to go casual, go for it, but don't expect us to come along.

Syronicus5813d ago

Anybody that actually believed there would be hard core games for "natal" was simply fooling themselves into thinking the Koop aid was actually tasty...

IdleLeeSiuLung5812d ago (Edited 5812d ago )

I would love hardcore games for Kinect and holding out that it will come. With that said, Kinect is exciting to me because it enables a new interface for gaming that I dreamed about as a kid. Despite it's problems, this might be the big game changer for gaming interface.

Looking back, we had the 2 button and 1 d-pad controller from Nintendo and look at how that evolved to day, gazillion buttons and freakin 2 analogs. It works, but isn't damn near intuitive at all. So since that time, this is the first time other than the Wii that we have an interface game changer.

Sure the Wii is exciting, but it has done it's thing in the last 4 years. We know what it can do! Let's give Kinect 4 years to see what it can do.

About hardcore games, I'm sure they will come if the market is there, but it seems you and a bunch of other fanboys here are just here to hate. That is fine, as nothing you or I say here will change a darn thing. Might as well embrace the future!

By the way, even though the Wii doesn't get much love from me these days it certainly is the console I have the most fun with family and friends!

A huge title like that and this genius explains himself with 8 sentences and nothing to give confirmation to what he states except for a general concensus that people are still skeptical.

WOW is all I got to say, talk about irresponsible jouralism, it won't stop until people that write this type of flamebait are held responsible for this garbage.

This is clearly to draw website hits so that they can make some cash.

zorglub5813d ago

Cry more.

Kinect is a huge failure.

pangitkqb5813d ago

but it was the other way around after all. Way to prove me wrong Sony!

NoelV5813d ago

After watching both shows, it's crystal clear to me that it is sony who are catering to the hardcores. And i don't even have a ps3. Way to go microsoft, that e3 conference was a huge slap on the face for those who have supported your console for all these years.

All i wanted was to have something to get excited about and MS failed to deliver. Big time. I'm not in the doom-and-gloom camp but i must admit that i'm really tempted to trade in my elite for a ps3 right now. MS better announce something fast before i spot a good deal for a trade-in

Bzone245813d ago

Wow. So that's what passes as an article around here?

gameplayingfool5813d ago

Wow. Apparently this is what passes for clever negativity around here.

Moving on, Kinect went into E3 enjoying a lot of hype and lost much of it after Microsoft's presentation. I would say deservingly. That doesn't mean Kinect can't have some great titles in the future though. In contrast, Move went in looking like a cheap Wii clone and, to almost industry-wide surprise, IMPRESSED with almost true 1 to 1 motion.

Yes, I own and enjoy a 360. Can't wait for Gears 3!

Bzone245813d ago

Doesn't change the fact this is a poor excuse for an article.

tplarkin75813d ago

He says there's "consensus" and then doesn't give any sources. He belongs at the EPA or IPCC to "verify" global warming. He'd make a great "environmental scientist".

He'd smile and nod, convincingly, when asked if the snow on Kilimanjaro was melting.

Blaze9295813d ago

Well who browses the gaming web? hardcore gamers. Who is Kinect for? Casual families/gamers. Where are they? Watching USA Today, Nick @ Nite and Good Morning America? What does Microsoft think about the Consensus Around The Web? They don't care, as Kinect is not meant for that audience.

Rainstorm815813d ago (Edited 5813d ago )

although , Sony and Nintendo showed more games that geared toward that same hardcore community while still reeling in the casuals.

Most casual people dont even pay attention to E3, That why the internet concensus is going down that road but everything will boil down to Pricing and value in the end.

Natal has to be 100 or less and the 360 bundle must be less than 400 because if the 360 become more expensive than the PS3 at this point failure is inevitable.

N4G king5813d ago

and if im a casual you think i'll run and buy me one ??
hell no I'll probably hating it because my sun plays it all day long don't nothing but screaming on the damn TV
that's the image of the xbox on the minds of eryone that knows it

let alone the strong competition this thing got (the wii)
the damn console it self didn't sell as much as the wii and you expecting this to do ??

if im a casual and I see a 200$ wii which most likely half of my casual friends have and played and showed me
and at the same time I see a 300$ (minimum) 360 NATAL bundle which i know nothing about
which one you think I'll get ??

think of it

Biggest5813d ago

Yes! Let's cheer on the casuals! You guys keep harping on the "They're a business" crap as if it validates your love. Who buys games? What are the top selling games that aren't bundled with a console system? What WERE the top selling games that weren't bundled with a console system? Casuals do not buy games like core gamers do. We're the people that scour the internet looking for glimpses of stupid shit like Duke Nukem. We're the people that pay hundreds of dollars on steering wheels years in advance for Gran Turismo. We're the people that think it matters to have a better arcade stick for Street Fighter IV in our living rooms. We're the people that bought game after game after game after game March through June. Microsoft is shunning the hand that feeds them. But I can see their strategy. It's not like you fans will turn on them. You'll sit patiently and wait for them to hand you a $500 bone. Microsoft is a business. You still love them.

Moentjers5813d ago

you have any idea how many peoply are asking their 'hardcore' nephew/neigbour for information on which console to buy ?

JackBNimble5813d ago

I think most would agree that MS wants to steal the casuals from the wii but I don't think it will work for the most part.

Like Biggest said " Casuals do not buy games like core gamers do". They also don't put in the hours of gaming that the core gamer does, maybe a few hours a week if that.

Is the wii gamer really going to invest more money into a new xbox and kinect for a few wii clones? Did anyone see the Nintendo E3? Nintendo has been around for 20+ years and casuals know what to expect from them , so why would they drop the wii for the 360? It just doesn't make any sense.

I'm sure a few wii owners will buy a 360 for kinect but not many, it will be xbox gamers who will be supporting the brunt of kinect. So I think whether kinect succeeds or fails will be up to the core gamer.

Just my opinion...

Overall I think Move is more appealing then Kinect. I'm probably going to get Move. But one thing I did find interesting in the M$ conference was the dance game( I don't remember the the name). I had DDR for my ps2 and it was fun, but the dance pad did have its limitations. Kinect does seem to be the answer for DDR type games. I also remember that I use to work up quit a sweet when playing DDR, I bet the new dance game for Kinect will burn more callores then the fitness titles coming out for it.

outrageous5813d ago

Kinect is a hit already. This guy/people are obviously trying to generate hits. What Kinect does and is capable of doing is just starting. I thought the Ubisoft presentation showed a glimpse of it's potential. Expect alot more in the coming weeks and months.

M$ has a winner on there hands. Lets revisit this story when the unit launches in November. They won't be able to make em fast enough.

zorglub5813d ago

Lol denial is strong in this one.

Everybody is making fun of Kinect, read on the net before embarassing yourself.

Yeah integrate Controller and Kinect was what I always expected.

But when you throw having to stand to play it into the mix....lol, good luck.

Crusade5813d ago

No. It's merely the united nations of teh internets.

Tony-A5813d ago

Actually, that's probably NeoGAF. haha

N4G is the internet critic HQ.

Microsoft Xbox 3605813d ago

Nope. Go to any gaming forum. Kinect is already labeled a failure even by xbox loyalists.

Rainstorm815813d ago

Most gaming forums and internet sites are filled with the people that Kinect has isolated, after the fact MS realized that Sony and Nintendo showed more games that geared toward that same hardcore community while still reeling in the casuals.

I dont know how successful Kinect will be, but this isnt a good start and i need more than Forza and multimedia functionality (although fairly cool but not worth a $100+) to make me purchase the device.

Im sure the casuals are interested, but then it comes down to pricing and value.

maddhatter1235813d ago (Edited 5813d ago )

soda do you know what a consesus is? it means most people think it sucks not just here. i don't know what some of you expected the fact that no one could think of any games should of told you it wouldn't have any good ones. i can come up with games i would want on move so the people whose job it is to make games i know can come up with something and they did.

cyborg69715813d ago

Wrong even die hard ms fanbois like stuttering craig has said it. And that is shocking to me at least. And this your the controler bit is getting old. You need inputs and anolog especially. This was doomed from the start. Why do you think Sony and ninty passed on it. It's a cash grab reaching for some bigger market share of the casuals. However most causl gamers already have a wii.

Microsoft Gaming Revenue Drops 7% Year-on-Year, Content and Services Down 5%, Xbox Hardware Down 33%

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio17d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing17d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9217d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit17d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing17d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9217d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

gamedeveloper.com
Eonjay18d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn219d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn218d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown19d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay18d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay18d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac18d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger19d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300019d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde19d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde18d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_18d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
