interesting point. I strongly believe we are very close to entering the next generation of consoles. Move/Kinect are designed to slightly extend the current cycle for another year. In fall 2011, new consoles will hit from all 3 manufacturers. 3D will be integral to these consoles and how each company implements it will make all the difference.

JackBNimble5818d ago

I doubt that very much, the PS3 isn't even 4 years old yet, and MS just dumped millions into kinect. Do you really think it's the end of this gen? not likely.

Rumor5818d ago (Edited 5818d ago )

fixed

Misterhbk5818d ago

this cycle isn't even close to being done. Maybe for the wii, but not for the 360 or the ps3.

how many people are playing on HDTV's??? That number is less than the people playing on standard tv's. Which means people of this gen aren't even fully taking advantage of what the consoles are currently capable of doing. Why upgrade their hardware for a whole new gen when the current consoles still have so much more to give. I believe we've only scratched the surface with what these consoles will be able to do, and developers are constantly saying the exact same thing. The PS3 itself was made for the "future" It's a console Sony plans to last at least 10 years, and with the technology it totes, there's no question as to whether it can or not. So don't get so excited for the next gen yet.

candystop5818d ago

Move maybe but Kinect will be around for awhile especially since they are working on a 2nd one already.

sikbeta5818d ago

@frankymv

What! Simply NO! PS3 is in its 4 Year and this Gen will last longer than previous generations, also all Third Party Devs lost Money and need to Recoup all that money...

3d, HDTV’S, Blue ray, CD, DVD, television and PS3 what do they have in common??? When there where shown for the first time everyone said they would fail, they said it was unnecessary technology and it was expensive and that no own would buy it because it was a waste of money, didn’t they said the same thing about the television, who would want to watch TV when there is radio? “Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it"…

Boody-Bandit5818d ago (Edited 5818d ago )

EXACTLY!
This is the point I have been trying to make to people since Sony announced 3D for gaming, BluRay and DD movies.

There is no way ALL electronic and broadcast companies would be jumping on the 3D bandwagon and investing billions of dollars if they didn't feel 3D was going to be successful, profitable and here to stay. At least until an even better format is created. I just hope I live long enough to see it. Huge tech head and electronics geek here. I am more into electronics than I am even into gaming and I am a HARDCORE gamer. I make most of my electronics purchases and home renovations around gaming. Yes I have an illness but I am not seeking a cure for it!

hoops5818d ago

3D gaming for consoles will explode and be huge next generation. As of now the cost is too high for 3d console gaming

raztad5818d ago

what do you mean by "cost is too high for 3d console gaming"?

iceman28855818d ago

That many people recently bought their HDTV (even if it was 3-5 years ago, it is considered recent since a TV is a long time investment).

Since a lot of people just recently upgraded to HDTV's they are less likely to fork out another couple thousand dollars for new tech 3D capable HDTV because they are first gen and much more expensive than a run of the mill HDTV. This is not to mention that the 3D glasses required to watch 3D TVs aren't cheap.

I'd classify myself in this group, I just bought my TV 2 years ago and it got $2,000 at the time (now it's much cheaper, which goes to the thought that people will wait until 3D TV's fall in price with time). I don't know about you, but when I dump $2000 into something, I'm gonna use it for more than 2 years before I go out and fork over another $3000 for a new TV.

So I'm guessing that's what they mean by the cost is too high, because you have to factor in the cost of the TV.

Esena5818d ago

I am assuming he means that "the cost is too high for 3d console gaming"...

3D gaming is way to expensive to be a mass selling point. Sony should know better from when their console was $600...

People like affordable gaming over high-end, expensive, gaming.

hoops5818d ago (Edited 5818d ago )

Iceman2885 gets bubbles. You nailed it dude.
The cost of a new HDTV tht is 3D compatibl is $2500-$3000+...Then you need the glasses which are $150+ a pop.
HD TV adoption has just passed the 50% mark IN NORTH AMERICA and its less in Europe. The greatest increases of HDTV's bought were done in the last 1-2 years when prices saw the greatest decline during those years for upcoming technology and the Recession. Those same people who bought those sets are most likely NOT going to spend $3000 on a new one just for 3D especially when the content is not there as of yet. Someone who purchased a new $2000 LED 58 Inch HDTV will not go out and buy a 42" LED 3D HDTV for $2500.
When you factor in the glasses. Its a small fortune during these economic times. Its not going to be big this generation based on that. Price is a huge factor.
Now look at the games? The games that will look AWESOME in 3D will be of the basic PSN, XBL variety with basic graphics. KZ3 in the tests so far (iT'S STILL ALPHA) ran at lower resolution and no AA at all. Because frame rates are cut in half AND to get the full EFFECT a game must run at a minimum of 60fps in 2d. If not then graphic and resolution compremises will have to occur.
The PC 3D setup is gfar cheaper as of now and offers actual full 1080p 3D gaming at 40fps+

Dellis5818d ago

3DS like tech on televisions is what needs to happen, who will do it first???

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8525d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele24d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk24d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay24d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10125d ago (Edited 25d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit24d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg24d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10124d ago (Edited 24d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14924d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle37d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker38d ago (Edited 38d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit37d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog38d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_38d ago (Edited 38d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog38d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad38d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_38d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage38d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda37d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
