E3: Who dominated E3 2010?

While E3 rages on for the rest of the week CEOs, VPs and senior development team chiefs from the three big games companies can now relax a little.

No one dominated. They were all pretty underwhelming imo although Sony had the most interesting game showings in LBP 2 and Twisted Metal.

Venatus-Deus5810d ago

I'll be able to answer than once I've seen/played with a 3DS. If its as good as I hope then Nintendo dominated because the just sold another 50-100 million of DS's again.

We play games... Companies play sales.

Just my opinion...

StanLee5810d ago (Edited 5810d ago )

Surprisingly, I think Nintendo won outright. They had a great show. What won me over was the support for the 3DS. They have great developers on board and the early software that will be available for the handheld looks amazing. Sony was second simply by having so much software offerings. Microsoft disappointed because of the huge focus on Kinect. If that was going to be the case, why have a separate showing the day before for the peripheral?

GWAVE5810d ago

I think Nintendo had the most "wow" factor. I mean, they really impressed me both on the Wii front and on the DS (and 3DS) front.

Sony simply showed off solid games, although I still don't think Move is all that special. Nintendo won the show, but I think Sony showed off more memorable games.

jonboi245810d ago

For me I have to say Nintendo won it. They stole my heart with all the nostalgic games and blow my mind with the 3DS support. But for me Sony was a close second. There was to much talking of things gamers would not care about, like the Coca-Cola deal. Move pretty much proved its better at games than all the other motion controls. Kevin 'Epic' Butler, VP of Inspirational and Epic monologues, owned E3. Other than Portal 2(day one buy) they're really wasn't much unexpected game announcements. Seriously as awesome as Twisted Metal is who didn't see that coming? Though in the eyes of casual gamers and the non-gaming media MS will probably be made to look better than Sony and maybe even Nintendo, though they really sucked and wasted two days of complete Kinect casual shit. Really E3 isn't the place to show this shit, they should showed this all at CES and showed more core games at E3.

Japanese game systems FTW!

Daver5810d ago

Its either Nintendo or Sony who won that E3 and very close to each other. Both companies showed good stuff.

Nintendo with the new games even if its still the same franchises. Zelda looks fun but it seems wii is not putting it as its best even with this ''interference' 9; problem. No need to hide this to ourselves but from what we have seen the controller was not following his movements at all. They showed nice games like Donkey kong who was a surprise and the new kirby who looks very fun in my opinion.

Sony showed a lot of games too, some footage of killzone 3, infamous 2, little big planet 2, release date of GT5.
They showed a lot about MOves and 3D who i think will be awesome. Kevin Butler on stage made us laugh and brought a fresh breath.
They gave us 2 nice surprises too Portal 2 and Twisted metal. Cant wait to try twisted metal loll

So both companies did very well, even if i wish Nintendo would have brought us some new IPs.

I agree about LBP2 and Twisted Metal, they were my personal favs.

Dude4205810d ago

Sony's conf. was alright, only the last 20 minutes were interesting because of their exclusive line up. They could of saved so much time by not focusing so much on Move and Multiplat videos that were already shown. Ninty IMO won it.

Gamingisfornerds5810d ago (Edited 5810d ago )

Nintendo just hasn't got any games I'm interested in. Both Sony and MS showed nothing new I'm excited about, but the 'usual suspects':

Killzone 3, Halo Reach, Portal, Gears 3 all look killer! Kevin butler was funny, but other than that, it was all a bit meh.

Kinect looks like sh*t, Move wasn't all that impressive either. MS conference had too much Kinect crap going on, Sony had too much boring bla bla.

Overal though, we did get to see some cool games. But no conference on its own was particularly compelling.

ShadowCK5810d ago

Nintendo has no compelling games whatsoever. The only game of worthy value was Zelda and we all now it's going to have same predictable gameplay and story. Face it, most of the Zelda stories are crap and the controls are essentially the same as in Ocarina of Time - Lock-on, targeting, strafing, slashing. It's not fun, especially when the AI is going to be smart as a bunch of bricks and pose no real threat whatsoever. The rest of the games Nintendo showed off made me want to puke when I looked at each of it's graphics and gameplay.

Sony offered a small amount of games. The only compelling ones were Killzone 3, Infamous 2 and Littlebigplanet 2. They are all sequels and they are looked awful. Killzone 3 had little to no AA, so jaggies everywhere, texture pop-ins, frame rate and screen tearing. Textures looked worse than Killzone 2. This is the same for all of the other games which was showed. Sony has to be helped by Sony by developers such as Value and EA which demonstrates a clear sign of desperation.

Sony and Nintendo failed badly. Theres no question to that and whatever you guys think are not true. Nothing impressive and none of them bested Microsoft at E3.

Biggest5810d ago

Not much of what you said makes sense. Granted, the Zelda demo was rough. Hopefully they'll get Motion+ to work better by release. Kirby looks fresh. Donkey Kong looks fun. And they have even more support for the 3DS (which is kinda disappointing on the Wii side of things. The handhelds get more love).

Sony offered a small amount of games. . . That have apples in them maybe. They showed a TON of games. They showed dozens of games for the PSP. They showed dozens of games for the PS3. Yes, some of them were multiplatform games. But with the multiplat thing being an issue for the PS3 for quite a while, having new partnerships means you have to make news of it. When the 360 was trying to buy every multiplat game the PS3 suffered. Now that the devs see which system has the most potential they have decided to add more. People complained about the wasted BluRay space on multiplats. Now they're adding full games as extra features. If that isn't great news I don't know what is. I've said many a time (usually after someone says "But the 360 can make games like RDR. PS3 isn't special!") that there was always a way for the PS3 version to be better. Now with DeadSpace 2 having DeadSpace: Extraction on the same disk, we see that happening.

I won't comment on Microsoft. I didn't like them before E3. Now I REALLY don't like them. I am not and will never be a casual gamer. I use a gym to stay in shape. I know how to find a club if I want to dance. I have a dog. I can jump in place just fine without spending extra money to do so.

outrageous5810d ago (Edited 5810d ago )

They all had high points and and low points, in the end it was mediocre.

Ninetendo had the worst keep secret. The 3DS. Another expensive handheld. how many DS's are there?. Still, it'll sell millions but my guess it still suffers from the whole one hundred games on R4 piracy. It cost as much as a console.
Wii: Games look WORSE now than when the Wii launched. Worst graphics ever, worse than the Nintendo Gamecube. It terms of games releasing this year, the Wii won hands down. A lot to choose from. Did I mention how bad the graphics are.

Sony: Well KZ 3 looked good but not much different than KZ 2. The jetpack, when in motion was no different than a Mech. Still it looked ok. Will be 3D and Move compatible. That could be BIG.

At times I thought I was in the church of PS3, seriously, Jack Tretton would start preaching and I would scratch my head. Kevin Butler was funny at first but it went on and on. The Move game Sorcery looked great and could be a potential killer app. Jack said they wanted to show new apps for Move and then EA demo's Tiger woods??? ( is that new ) for an agonizing 10-15 mins. Many TV ads. many game announcements but the shock was $400 bundle with Move sports type of game. Wow, that's too high. Wii cost $200.

Valve was a nice surprise. Jaffe showed his game ( finally ) and it is Twisted Metal. I thought the graphics were average at best. GT in November, LBP2 looks good. Some New games with exclusive old games thrown in from EA. I liked the end better that the beginning. The price will be debated for a while I think.

Microsoft: Had a mediocre presentation. Exclusive from Crytek, gears 3 looked great, MGS looked great, fable looked good, black ops looked good. Halo of course, looked like Halo.

Kinect looked very casual oriented, no surprise, it's demographic is the Wii nation. Strangely no Milo? No killer app but the dance game from MTV and Ubisoft fitness thing could be big sellers. New xbox looks great but the price is $299. How much will Kinect cost. M$ not telling till launch November. No bundle announced either. WTF

Hoping for some late week surprises from all of them. Friday should be interesting.

King_of _the_Casuals5810d ago (Edited 5810d ago )

I must also agree that Nintendo stole the show. Both Sony and MS underwhelmed this year. Sony probably 2nd and MS a close 3rd. There presentations were pretty much mirror images of each other...Kinect vs Move, Already Announced Awesome MS Games vs Already Announces Awesome PS Games, a bunch of 3rd party games vs a bunch of 3rd party games, ESPN vs PSN Network. The only thing that would give Sony the edge would be they atleast announces/showed a new game...Twisted Metal.

menoyou5810d ago

Sony and Nintendo beat the pants off Microsoft, that's for sure. I think Sony did slightly better than Nintendo, who also did good.

sony won edging out nintendo. it was very, very close.

Shadow Flare5810d ago

kirby, donkey kong, kid icarus, starfox, zelda, goldeneye didn't excite me as i've never played them before, so the only thing nintendo announced that interested me was 3DS. So for me, Sony easily won

NexGen5810d ago

Thanks! You just made me feel old. To top it all off, I still consider most of those titles (besides Zelda) to be Nintendo's newer offerings.

Let me find my hearing aid.

PCnPS3Gamer5810d ago

my first console was a super nintendo. while ur looking wanna find me my hearing aid....ot : sony won the support for move combined with 3d is staggering not to mention how cool it is that bluray is so big they can fit move game and original game on one disc....devs are prob lovin sony and theyre motion gaming right now so flexible....

twisted metal yeeee. socom 4 looked awesome graphics looked like they improved alot. from the last vid i saw....killzone 3 looked uncharted 2/killzone 2 epic. wish i could have seen what it looked like in 3d.

the fight + move + 3d + me drunk = pure awesomness

little disappointed in moves pricing but atleast it seems to be a good solid device with tons of dev saupport a games. also i want a new ps3 with wireless N wifi. wireless g is teh balls.

jonboi245810d ago

@3.2.2
lol i loved how when they mentioned that the move controller was 49.99 everyone cheered and then announced the navigation add on was 29.99 the place just died. everyone was probably oh shit this is nintendo all over again.

@3.2
completely understand that your not interested in nintendo's offering seeing as the appeal to them at least at this point without having played them, is nostalgia. but sony did a good job, though too much unnecessary talking. and no last guardian and agent.

BannedForNineYears5810d ago

I got flamed so hard on Youtube for saying what the Pope just said.
-_-
Honestly, Nintendo announced sooo many casual games.......
Think about it, that Sorcery game = less casual than "kirby, donkey kong, kid icarus, starfox, and zelda".
And Sorcery was the most casual game Sony announced!!!!
I'm not saying Zelda will be bad, it's just kind of casual in my opinion.......Especially the graphics >_<

jonboi245810d ago

dude how is zelda, donkey kong country, kirby, and kid icarus casual?

zelda is on the most hardcore gaming franchises ever. the addition of and poorly demonstrated implement of 1:1 sword fighting adds so much more strategy. you can't blindly waggle the wii-mote anymore and really have to think of how to swing and where to attack.

donkey kong country return is no casual game. this is donkey kong country returning to its roots, back to 2d platform at its best. if this is casual than donkey kong country 1-3 were casual games.

can't say much for kirby because the new gameplay formula is unfamiliar and obviously have yet to play it so really can compare it to something. kid icarus trailer really doesn't show much on how the gameplay works. star fox wasn't even shown at the conference so how it casual?

Biggest5810d ago

I think people get casual and rated less than T mixed up. I won't call any of those Nintendo games casual. But I will say that they are underwhelming for those that never played their previous iterations. I have, so I am pleased. But my son, who I am trying to school on the older games, could care less. He'll come around though. He just beat SMW, Super Metroid, DKC for the first time.

sikbeta5810d ago

For me N didn't won cos exactly the opposite as you Shadow Flare, I played all of those games years ago, even if I don't remember how much I enjoy them, it's like something I was expecting from the Core-Nintendo, so the Only WoW thing was 3DS and MGS3D

This E3 Belongs to Sony, It could be better if the guys didn't talk too much, but Twisted Metal, GT5 Release date + Awesome New trailer, Portal2 + Steam with Gabe on Stage, KB, Move working Great, Heroes on The Move, Sly Collection + 3D, a little bit of MotorStorm:Apocalypse, DS2 + Extraction, MOH + Frontline, Sorcery and KZ3 were Totally Awesome...

BannedForNineYears5810d ago

1:1? Wii? Lol?!

When I think hardcore games, I think GOW.....Sorry.... >_>

Ryuha1234h5810d ago (Edited 5810d ago )

I'm a sony fan but man I gotta be honest Nintendo really kick both Sony and MS ass this year.

HighDefinition5810d ago (Edited 5810d ago )

I dont think so, I think Sony and Nintendo just showed how established they are and how much MS isnt (through their own doings). IMO, Sony is gonna be runnin the console market and Nintendos gonna be runnin the handheld market for a long time to come (Im talking about quality not sales) I just dont know where MS fits in to all that. It would take MS 10 years to assemble the quality 1st party devs Sony and Nintendo have currently. BTW, that explains what just happened at e3.

raWfodog5810d ago

IF nintendo won (and thats a big IF), they didnt kick Sony's ass. It was the equivalent of winning by a basket. I was more impressed by the new software and features that Sony offered...and Gabe eating crow :)

Incidentally though, I am NOT interested in paying for PSN+. Wasnt doing it with LIVE and not doing it with PSN+. As long as my online multiplayer stays free, I'm golden.

HighDefinition5810d ago

I think PSN+ will be really cool especially w/ the extra`s you get, my only beef against XBL ever was not being able to play games online w/o purchasing the service. The reason being is I use my 360 maybe 5-10 times a year. But, PSN+ gives games, avatars, betas, features, discounts and all sorts of cool stuff that actually makes it worth it to have the service. W/ that said it`s cool we get 3 months to try it out first.

jonboi245810d ago (Edited 5810d ago )

i wouldn't say kicked sony's ass. both companies did what they wanted to do pretty well. nintendo relied heavily on nostalgia. if you didn't grow up with nintendo or where born prior to its nes, snes and even 64 you'd probably end up not caring for a majority of their announced gameds. 3DS totaly stole the show, where as Kevin 'Epic' Butler, VP of Awesome Monologues owned E3. sony had some awesome content to show and literally had the WTF and OMG moment of E3. sony did a good job at proving move is the best and most accurate motion controller in the market, though will have a hard time proving to non-gamers and the casual market to buy it. especially with ps3 still being the most expensive (though a lot more reasonable priced) console on the market. $400 champion bundle still expensive though unless the system is the 250gb one you really don't save any money if you were to buy a 160gb($299.99) and the move bundle($99.99) separately. and god knows how much the 3DS is gonna be and i'm guessing more than or as much as the PSPgo. so Nintendo rebuilds it reputation to core gamers and sony keeps the momentum strong and all gamers win especially if you own a wii or ps3 or in the future a 3DS.

Japanese Game Systems FTW!

dveio13d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing13d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit13d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing13d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Athlon10116d ago (Edited 16d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit15d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg15d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10115d ago (Edited 14d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14915d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Eonjay15d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn215d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn215d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown15d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay15d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay15d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac14d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger15d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300015d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde15d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde15d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".
