Now this is just an estimate but I don't see how people lining up in a long line translates into sales for a PS3 (most expensive console this gen) in a country with a vastly smaller per household yearly income like China. So lining up to see it for free might be about as close as they get to it anytime soon. Especially since Mexico is a 3rd World country economically and the people there make about 70% more per year than the people of China.

From what we have seen, its looks like its a better deal than buying a 360. I have played the 360 games, and seen gameplay of teh upcomming ones, it just doesnt do anyhting for me, the PS3 games just look better and the gameplay seems better to me.

in motorstorm looks better and more fun than any racer for the 360. PGR3 looks good, but the gameplay is weak, its not differnt than the previous ones, just shinier graphics. Motorstorm, you got all this physics going on, the terrain changes dust kicking up, things falling off of the vehicles, which makes an impact on how the outcome of the game is, PGR3, just race around. Warhawk is going to be awesome, with the tilt controller, awesome physics, its must have. heavenly sword, already looks insane, Reistance looks better than gears of war to me. Gears of War is just really dark, so they get away with a lot becaus making it so dark, just like doom 3. Tekken 6 will be the flagship of fighters, just take a look at tekken dark ressurection, that game looks as good as tekken 5, imagine when they show the final version of tekken 6 on ps3. Call of Duty 3 i heard will use the tilt sensing controller. Ps3 has too much going for itself to make me think of wanting the 360.
Take a look at SC:DA HD gameplay on the 360, its cleary having a lot of trouble running that game, there are places where the building jsut gets deleted, then you can see it being rcreated, the 360 is already struggling and it hasnt even been a year yet. You guys will be buying a PS3, trust me.

smakdown VS RAW is being delayed because the devs simply do not ahve enough time so it will come out later than the other consoles and who said that the ps3 is hard to develop for, some of the developers said that it is harder to develop games on ps3 than 360 but they say the ps3 is much easier to develop fo than the ps2. so from the way i see it is that both consoles( ps3 and 360) are easy to develop for but one is slightly easier than the other.

You want proof huh. Take a look at the HD gameplay video of it on gametrailers.com. YOu will have your proof. The buildings disappears and reappears, there is another one when Sam is walkking, and the top corner of a building just gets deleted, blacked out, then you can see it being recreated.

Ps3 is garenteed to be quality product just like psp before it. It will destroy you silly xflop 360 garenteed. It is more like paper shredder 1.5. I cant wait to get ahold of the tilt sensing functionality of the ps3 controller. Sony currently has the de facto standard. I love Ken Kutaragi, he is a god to me. I dont do anything but bash the 360 because I am a pathetic fanboy with nothing better to do then through out insults because I have to wait for November so I can wait in line all night in front of best buy. See, now you are going to far Jin. Prey is a PC port that recieved a 9.0 OUTSTANDING review. And in the comparisson it out performed a low end and middle end computer and it was a tad less detailed than the high end pc using the 7900 graphics card which cost 500 to 600 dollars. lol.... And the developers of Prey said "due to lack of texture ram and memory access, Prey couldn't be done properly on the ps3". So even though a cutting edge computer has a slight edge with a Port to the 360, at least the 360 can run it better than most pc's. Ps3 couldn't run it at all. Nuff Said.

P.S. much of the difference in detail in the comparissons was due to the dvi connected pc and the componant connected 360. Once they release a dvi connector for the 360, the video signal will be cleaner and sharper.

P.S.S The nature of a Port from one platform to another makes it to where the platform it was initially intended for should out perform the Port. But with that said. The PC to 360 ports have came very close to the PC high end counter parts. And in some cases as in Call of Duty 2, out performed the PC version. Now Gears of War is a game that should utilize the 360 in ways a High end PC can't match. 3 cores and a custom graphics card that has features yet to be implemented in PC's yet....And from the trailer in the movie theatre...it is going to be exciting to witness hands on. I know sony fans have to be pissed that we get an exclusve title from EPIC and they get a PC port in Unreal. lol....And not only is it a port. But damn, how many unreals have they made? And its bound to come to the 360. But if it don't. I have a cutting edge PC that will spank the low texture ram, low memory, PS3.

They are designed differntly, it doesnt mean that a game like Prey cant be done on a PS3.

Central Processing Unit (CPU) performance.

The Xbox 360 CPU architecture has three times the general purpose processing power of the Cell.

Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) performance

The Xbox 360 GPU design is more flexible and it has more processing power than the PS3 GPU.

Memory System Bandwidth

The memory system bandwidth in Xbox 360 exceeds the PS3's by five times.

When you break down the numbers, Xbox 360 has provably more performance than PS3. Keep in mind that Sony has a track record of over promising and under delivering on technical performance. The truth is that both systems pack a lot of power for high definition games and entertainment.

However, hardware performance, while important, is only a third of the puzzle. Xbox 360 is a fusion of hardware, software and services. Without the software and services to power it, even the most powerful hardware becomes inconsequential. Xbox 360 games—by leveraging cutting-edge hardware, software, and services—will outperform the PlayStation 3.

The PS3 has 22.4 GB/s of GDDR3 bandwidth and 25.6 GB/s of RDRAM bandwidth for a total system bandwidth of 48 GB/s.

The Xbox 360 has 22.4 GB/s of GDDR3 bandwidth and a 256 GB/s of EDRAM bandwidth for a total of 278.4 GB/s total system bandwidth.

Why does the Xbox 360 have such an extreme amount of bandwidth? Even the simplest calculations show that a large amount of bandwidth is consumed by the frame buffer. For example, with simple color rendering and Z testing at 550 MHz the frame buffer alone requires 52.8 GB/s at 8 pixels per clock. The PS3's memory bandwidth is insufficient to maintain its GPU's peak rendering speed, even without texture and vertex fetches.

The PS3 uses Z and color compression to try to compensate for the lack of memory bandwidth. The problem with Z and color compression is that the compression breaks down quickly when rendering complex next-generation 3D scenes.

HDR, alpha-blending, and anti-aliasing require even more memory bandwidth. This is why Xbox 360 has 256 GB/s bandwidth reserved just for the frame buffer. This allows the Xbox 360 GPU to do Z testing, HDR, and alpha blended color rendering with 4X MSAA at full rate and still have the entire main bus bandwidth of 22.4 GB/s left over for textures and vertices.

What do you think of the PS3's Cell architecture? How much harder is it for developers to write asymmetric multiprocessing code that will run on the PPE and the SPE's? How difficult will it be to port code that is tuned for the Cell over to the 360 while maintaining good performance? Do you think Sony made the architecture complex deliberately to make porting that way harder, or were they just trying to get maximum performance out of their system?

I don't think the Cell is as well designed for game development as Sony would have you believe. Some aspects of the SPEs, such as the lack of branch prediction, make them particularly unsuited to running most game code, which contains a lot of branches. They appear to be designed more for serialized streaming math code, more common in video codecs and audio processing, the traditional domain of digital signal processing chips. The memory architecture of the SPEs, specifically their lack of automatic cache coherency in favor of DMA transactions, seems like a lot of overhead is needed to feed work units to the SPEs and copy the results back to system memory.

The PPE appears to be essentially identical to one of the Xbox 360 cores, except without the VMX128 enhancements and with half the cache. However, a much greater assortment of work has to be crammed into this single core—all of the game loop, all of the rendering commands, and the system allegedly takes over some time as well. Only the second and third cores on Xbox 360 use a small timeslice to provide cool stuff like the Guide, music playback, Dolby Digital encoding, and more things that we can add in the future to all games, past and present.

I think porting from Xbox 360 to PS3 will be reasonably difficult, since the Xbox 360 has a lot more general purpose processing power that can be flexibly reallocated, and all of the Xbox 360 CPU cores have equal access to all memory. The asymmetric nature of the Cell could easily lead to situations where the game has too little of one type of processing power and too much of another. And the content might suffer as well, since you'll never see a PS3 title with more than 256MB of textures at any given time, due to the split graphics and system memory banks. When we announced 512MB of unified memory on Xbox 360, I think all of our game developers (and the artists too) did a little happy dance. It's easier to use and gives developers much more flexibility in how they allocate memory for various resources.

If you look at the link you can see a diagram of the Ps3 arhitechture and understand why they can only display max 256 ram for graphics at any given time. Thats why the Devs of Prey said that Prey could not be properly done on the ps3. Its sad but its true. Why Sony? Why did you do this to us? Why did you put blu ray in, which raised the costs, and slack on the graphics tech? We wan't next gen graphics. Not just next gen movies. Sony blew it big time. Even graphics cards for PC's have more than 256 ram allocated for graphics.

Matt Lee: The specific design of the Xbox 360 CPU came out of predictions about the expected workload of the CPU and also the performance trends in the CPU industry. Advances in single core performance slowed down recently, and further performance improvements in that area typically come at great expense in complexity, die area, and power consumption. A multiple core design is the way to easily add more performance without increasing complexity of the cores. Three cores fit the rectangular die very well—the chip has 4 quadrants, with the L2 cache in one quadrant and the three cores in the other 3 quadrants.

The Xenon CPU has a PowerPC lineage and supports the Altivec instruction set. Did Microsoft add any specific extensions to these instructions? How useful has Altivec been for developers? Do the development libraries make any special use of it?

Yes, our vector unit is enhanced beyond the basic Altivec/VMX instruction set and capabilities, and we call it VMX128. We increased the vector register count to 128 registers (from 32), and added a few new instructions designed for games. We have a dot product instruction that can complete one 3- or 4-element dot product each clock cycle, unaligned vector load/store instructions, and a set of instructions for loading and storing to Direct3D compressed vector types, such as float16 (halfs), 2:10:10:10 vectors (DEC3N), and 8:8:8:8 byte vectors. These instructions accelerate common math and memory operations found specifically in games. And most Altivec/VMX instructions still exist on the VMX128 vector units as well, unchanged from their operation on previous PowerPC cores.

I never said that. I only quote what the Pro's say in regards to the system comparissons. Developers, ect.... Matt Lee and others have to be held accountable for anything they say. They aren't fanboys hiding behind a computer screen. They are public figures who are respected in their field of choice. Thats why you won't hear any ps3 developers flat out say the ps3 is better for games. You will only hear them say its more powerful in pushing numbers, or its more powerful for our target audience, or the blu ray was a master stroke. All I can say is...more love for the Chinese. They've been held back by their government's restrictions for a hell of a long time (and luckily those restrictions have been disappearing one by one). I feel the 360 is a great system that appeals to certain types of gamers, but if you buy one just to spite Sony/PS3 than I think you made a bad decision. If you like the games 360 has then why not buy it. I feel I made a mistake in getting a 360 because I got one to play Next-gen games A.S.A.P.

Now I feel I should have waited because the games I like are on PS3. Origional games like Heavenly Sword, MGS4, GT, RFOM, and especially FFXIII are what I want.

I am in no way bashing M$ or 360 but the games on 360 just don't appeal to me and to be fair, that's just my opinion and I DID give M$ a fair chance to earn my money and my time. I think 360 is suffering from a lot of overhyping from 360 fanboys, because they seem to hype EVERY game on the system. An exapmle of that is GRAW which is a great game but some people will/have overhyped it into something it never was or intended to be. Let's just hope that us gamers learn to accept games for what they are with out all the crazy overhyping (like GOW is getting, It's getting to the point where the game with never live up to the hype). Can't we just enjoy the games for what they are and give our honest reviews without adding all the crazy fanboy extra's to the converstaion?

Don't attack me but in post 64 you say GOW has been hyped so much it can't be lived up too?, hype is not making GOW, people have played it and most see gameplay all the time, GOW earned the hype and made the hype not the other way around. Guys...WHAT developers have said the PS3 is hard to develope for? I haven't seen ANY OF THEM. Most of them say it's the easiest to develope for. Epic is saying so. EA is saying so. Incognito, of course, is saying so. Ubisoft is saying so. COME FRICKIN' ON! The 360 is freakin' great, but due to no hard drive on one of them, no blue-ray, and just a bad processor, it can't put as many things on screen or put as much texture into a game as the PS3. Why is everyone arguing this? You're all so close-minded!

But me, I back everything I say with links that support my claims. It gives more weight to my points. Many of you have factless, baseless points. It just so happens its Sony fan boys. My friends are, for the most part, turned off by the 360. Their comments mirror mine in that while it's a pretty good system, the games just don't live up to the hype. The real question of course is who's hype?

Microsoft is responsible for some of it considering how much it's supposed to be "the center of your living room" and "connect all of your digital devices together on one system." While that does sound good, it also sounds like every other ad campaign out there. It did live up to its promises, but the problem is that people want to connect their devices to their PCs, not their game consoles. The game console is supposed to be a stand-alone product, a master of all trades so to speak. While it's nice that the 360 can stream movies and music from your computer over broadband home network, not everyone has broadband yet. And even the ones that do would rather watch and listen to all that content on their 360. I know I would. There's only so many USB ports, and so many things to plug into it.

Sony played a significant role too in that it laid down a pretty big gauntlet with the E3 05 videos, which is the most controversial event in probably gaming history. The problem isn't just that Sony has to live up to those videos, but that Microsoft has to as well since they raised the expectations of EVERYONE in the gaming community. Based on recent events, it seems that the developer concept renders just might be possible on the PS3. And while Microsoft refuses to take the strategy of showing the potential of their console (and instead rely almost entirely on gameplay footage, even when that footage is sub-par) everything their developers release will be compared to footage from the PS3 developers. All that matters is what is shown to the public, and not necessarily the context.

Microsoft seems to be seeing this for themselves, which is probably why they forced the developers of Forza Motorsport 2 to show a CG video instead of gameplay footage. But for them to show CG at this late stage might prove to be a mistake because it'll put them in Sony's shoes. Already, there's quite a bit of grumbling from magazine readers that the games they buy don't always look as good as the screenshots (I won't say for what games, but there's a few major ones). Sony will most likely force all of its 1st and 2nd party developers to rely on in-engine and in-game footage for trailers up through launch. Microsoft's strategy is a bit divided however, and not because they're not smart (Microsoft is actually very clever), it's that this time around they don't have a technologically superior system. They know this. They've known it since the first specs were released over a year ago. The problem lies in how to market a product that's good, but not nearly as good as the competition. And rest assured, Sony is going to repeat a lot of things from the Dreamcast era, though the challenge for them this time is to live up to their dreams and aspirations in a much shorter time frame, and to do it better than everyone else in order to justify the higher admission price.

The PS3 has 22.4 GB/s of GDDR3 bandwidth and 25.6 GB/s of RDRAM bandwidth for a total system bandwidth of 48 GB/s.

The Xbox 360 has 22.4 GB/s of GDDR3 bandwidth and a 256 GB/s of EDRAM bandwidth for a total of 278.4 GB/s total system bandwidth.

Why does the Xbox 360 have such an extreme amount of bandwidth? Even the simplest calculations show that a large amount of bandwidth is consumed by the frame buffer. For example, with simple color rendering and Z testing at 550 MHz the frame buffer alone requires 52.8 GB/s at 8 pixels per clock. The PS3's memory bandwidth is insufficient to maintain its GPU's peak rendering speed, even without texture and vertex fetches.

The PS3 uses Z and color compression to try to compensate for the lack of memory bandwidth. The problem with Z and color compression is that the compression breaks down quickly when rendering complex next-generation 3D scenes.

HDR, alpha-blending, and anti-aliasing require even more memory bandwidth. This is why Xbox 360 has 256 GB/s bandwidth reserved just for the frame buffer. This allows the Xbox 360 GPU to do Z testing, HDR, and alpha blended color rendering with 4X MSAA at full rate and still have the entire main bus bandwidth of 22.4 GB/s left over for textures and vertices.

When you break down the numbers, Xbox 360 has provably more performance than PS3. Keep in mind that Sony has a track record of over promising and under delivering on technical performance. The truth is that both systems pack a lot of power for high definition games and entertainment.

However, hardware performance, while important, is only a third of the puzzle. Xbox 360 is a fusion of hardware, software and services. Without the software and services to power it, even the most powerful hardware becomes inconsequential. Xbox 360 games—by leveraging cutting-edge hardware, software, and services—will outperform the PlayStation 3.

What do you think of the PS3's Cell architecture? How much harder is it for developers to write asymmetric multiprocessing code that will run on the PPE and the SPE's? How difficult will it be to port code that is tuned for the Cell over to the 360 while maintaining good performance? Do you think Sony made the architecture complex deliberately to make porting that way harder, or were they just trying to get maximum performance out of their system?

I don't think the Cell is as well designed for game development as Sony would have you believe. Some aspects of the SPEs, such as the lack of branch prediction, make them particularly unsuited to running most game code, which contains a lot of branches. They appear to be designed more for serialized streaming math code, more common in video codecs and audio processing, the traditional domain of digital signal processing chips. The memory architecture of the SPEs, specifically their lack of automatic cache coherency in favor of DMA transactions, seems like a lot of overhead is needed to feed work units to the SPEs and copy the results back to system memory.

The PPE appears to be essentially identical to one of the Xbox 360 cores, except without the VMX128 enhancements and with half the cache. However, a much greater assortment of work has to be crammed into this single core—all of the game loop, all of the rendering commands, and the system allegedly takes over some time as well. Only the second and third cores on Xbox 360 use a small timeslice to provide cool stuff like the Guide, music playback, Dolby Digital encoding, and more things that we can add in the future to all games, past and present.

I think porting from Xbox 360 to PS3 will be reasonably difficult, since the Xbox 360 has a lot more general purpose processing power that can be flexibly reallocated, and all of the Xbox 360 CPU cores have equal access to all memory. The asymmetric nature of the Cell could easily lead to situations where the game has too little of one type of processing power and too much of another. And the content might suffer as well, since you'll never see a PS3 title with more than 256MB of textures at any given time, due to the split graphics and system memory banks. When we announced 512MB of unified memory on Xbox 360, I think all of our game developers (and the artists too) did a little happy dance. It's easier to use and gives developers much more flexibility in how they allocate memory for various resources.

Even the devs for Prey said that due to the lack of ram for textures Prey could not be ran on a ps3. Look at the diagram of the ps3. Only 256 can be used for graphics. "I recall an article IGN released short after or during E3 2005 comparing Playstation 3 and Xbox360. Microsoft analyzed their total system bandwidth in the Xbox360 and came up with some outrageous numbers compared to the Playstation 3. One of the big reasons for this total number being higher is the 256GB/s bandwidth between the daughter die and parent die in the Xenos(graphics chip). I will explain the use of the eDRAM memory later, but it is important to know that the logic performed between those two components with 256GB/s bandwidth hardly constitutes a system component where considering game processing takes place. Additionally, Microsoft added up bandwidths that weren’t relevant to major component destinations such as “to CPU” or “to GPU.” Context like that matters a lot, because bandwidth between any two elements is only as fast as the slowest memory bus in-between. The only bandwidth figures that make sense to add together are those on separate buses to the end destination.

The biggest ugly (and this really is a big one) in the Xbox360 diagram should be the location of the CPU relative to the main system memory. It has to be accessed through the GPU’s memory controller. The Xbox360 GPU’s memory has 22.4GB/s bandwidth to the system’s unified memory, and this bandwidth is split between the GPU’s needs and the CPU’s. A simple investigation would show that if the Xenon(Xbox360 CPU) was using its full 21.6GB/s bandwidth to system memory, there would be 800MB/s left for the GPU. If the GPU was using it’s full bandwidth to this memory, none would be left for anything else. Additionally, the southbridge(I/O devices) is connected through the GPU also, and all of these devices are actually destined to go to the CPU unless sound for the Xbox360 is done on the Xenos. The impact of this is considerably less since I/O devices probably won’t exceed more than a few hundred MB/s during a game, and isn’t shared by GPUs 22.4GB/s access to main memory. This bandwidth is still going through the same bus that the CPU uses to access RAM though.

Looking at the diagram of the Playstation 3, you can see that the RSX has a dedicated 22.4 GB/s to its video memory, and the Cell has a dedicated 25.6GB/s to its main memory. Additionally, if you wanted to find the bandwidth the RSX could use from the Cell’s main memory, it go through the 35GB/s link between the Cell and itself, and then go through the Cell processor’s FlexIO controller, on the EIB, to the Cells memory controller which is the gatekeeper to RAM. The slowest link in the line is the bandwidth the XDR memory controller provides which is 25.6GB/s. If the RSX uses this extra bandwidth it is being shared with the Cell. In general though, the major components in the Playstation 3 have their own memory to work with which provides maximum bandwidth.

In terms of peak performance, if both the GPU and CPU for both consoles were pushing the maximum bandwidths from their respective memory banks, the total for Xbox360 would be 22.4GB/s, and the total for the Playstation 3 would be 48GB/s. I believe this to be the most important bandwidth measure as both of these elements are the major programmable elements of a gaming machine. They will be processing game data or graphics data independently, and need fast access and high bandwidth to what they are working on.

While the Xbox360 shared bandwidth is a big downside on the grand scheme of things considering potential, Microsoft probably allowed this due to the nature of a game loops often not involving both the CPU and GPU needing high bandwidth simultaneously. Overall, during a game loop, Xbox360 will probably use its 22.4GB/s bandwidth almost constantly due to the CPU using it heavily for a part of the game loop, and the GPU using extreme bandwidth during another part of the game loop. While a Playstation 3 game, if it uses a typical game loop design, would show half of the frame time, the CPU is using high bandwidth to its memory, the other half being mostly unused; and the same thing for the GPU’s use of video RAM. That isn’t a disadvantage of the Playstation 3’s part, but it is a lack of using its full potential. A modified game loop that kept both rendering and CPU processing high would fare far better on the Playstation 3’s bandwidth and design than the Xbox360.

In the worst case scenario for the Playstation 3, if the GPU literally only used bandwidth for half of the game loop, overtime, you could consider it’s bandwidth to be half of its peak. Same thing applied to the Cell and XDR RAM would yield 12.8GB/s bandwidth if it only used XDR half of the time. Although Playstaiton 3 not to be outdone - if the situation of a game loop is like this, the RSX might as well take the XDR RAM bandwidth while the CPU is idling and increase its total bandwidth to 48GB/s."

June 30, 2006 - Japan's development community shared anonymous thoughts on the PlayStation 3 in the latest issue of Japan's Ge-Maga. The magazine asked developers throughout the nation a number of questions regarding Sony's next generation platform. While the number of responses was not revealed, Ge-Maga is pretty well-connected (name changes aside, Ge-Maga is the oldest videogame magazine in Japan), so we're going to assume the survey reached a good portion of Japan's development community.

Of course, the big question concerned price. 90.29% of the surveyed feel the PS3 is too pricey, compared to just 9.71% who feel that it's priced just right. One developer commented, "It's more expensive than my rent."

Ge-Maga

The high price isn't all the developers are disappointed with. 56.31% disagree with Sony's choice of going with two hardware models, compared with 39.32% who agree with the move. 55.82% feel that the PS3 won't sell with the current lineup of announced titles, compared to 39.32% who feel that it will sell. "There are fears that confusion will develop amongst users and retailers," said one developer concerning the multiple SKUs.

E3 had an effect on some developers. While 48.54% stated that, following the show, their anticipation of the hardware is unchanged, 32.52% stated that they've become less confident in the platform. Only 3.39% said that they were relieved by Sony's announcements at the show.

Many developers feel that Sony may have trouble reaching its sales goals. 62.13% feel that the system won't reach 6,000,000 sales by March of next year. In comparison, 35.43% feel that Sony will reach this goal. One developer cited price and competition as reason for this prediction. Another expressed the desire to watch and see how Sony handles things from here on out.

Carmack points out that there could be diminishing returns with the Ps3, thanks to the architecture of the hardware. Although the PS3's Cell processor is powerful, it's still a single-thread processor (unlike high-end PC processors).

There's not much more technology can do to crank more speed out of a single-threaded processor. To make up for this deficiency, multiple processors are used: multithreading and parallelism is the way to go. But this isn't easy to do in games! "The returns will initially be disappointing," he explains.

It will take a long time before game developers will figure out how to get the most out of parallel processors, and in the meantime, it's going to make high-end game development more difficult -- "Not a good thing," Carmack says. There's no easy solution to this problem, no special compiler that'll take away the grunt work. "There's no silver bullet for parallel programming."

Sony's position seems to be similar to the company's stance with the PS2: Sure, it'll be hard, but the really good developers will suck it up and figure it out. But Carmack wonders aloud: wouldn't it have been better to use multi-threaded processors to begin with?

In terms of performance, I think that the PS3 and the Xbox 360 will essentially be a wash. We ran the numbers a while back and the two systems come up surprisingly close in theoretical peak performance, despite the one year difference in release dates. However, I know for a fact that we have a great advantage in software and services—our development environment and tools are years ahead of the competition, and this will ensure that Xbox 360 game developers can easily realize all of this performance and make superior games. Xbox 360 is a great system to develop on, a real pleasure—and I believe our developers agree.

Thats what keeps me going. I love to hear a good success story of an x unhappy sony fan turned 360 lover. One man at a time. The Truth is all people need and then they jump in and experience what we already know. The 360 is the best 400 dollars you will ever spend. Price/value/content/online WOW....

Yeah, to this day I still wonder how the RSX (at 550 mhz) can manage to do 1.8 Teraflops. I think the 7900 series cards max out at around 1.2 teraflops. GPUs in PCs are underutilized anyway due to the low bandwidth of PCI and AGP (even PCI-express isn't all that great), as well as all the other operating system related things the CPU does in the background. It's a good thing Cell has the Flex I/O connection to RSX so that it can constantly feed it with data. 35 GB/s. That's just overkill, hehe.

The Xbox 360 has a lot more general purpose processing power that can be flexibly reallocated, and all of the Xbox 360 CPU cores have equal access to all memory. The asymmetric nature of the Cell could easily lead to situations where the game has too little of one type of processing power and too much of another. they keep using one chip for the whole thing when both systems have power left over to do more.these systems aren't pcs using one chip.they have multiple chips.they need to start thinking parallel.do i use one horse to hall something or use multiple horses to hall something to make it easier?

There is no data from Sony or anyone that says that the ps3 can allocate 512 megs of ram for Graphics. Why? Because its not possible. Sorry if that dissappoints some of you. But its true. Only 256 megs of ram can be allocated for textures at any give time. And the floating point teraflop performance isn't for graphics...its for cg animation. So yes...the ps3 will be superior for CG cut scenes. But As 3d realms have stated. They just don't have enough texture ram for highly detailed games. I'm sure the games will still look decent with Nvidias last gen 6800 card that they put in the ps3. But no where near the 360's detail or a cutting edge PC's graphical detail.

The Final specs have been released. lol...Unless developers have been lying. At E3 2005 Epic said they they had been working with dev kits for 2 months prior. So that means devs have had kits for over a year. Developers share info with eachother. lol....And on top of that Nvidia said themselves that the specs of the Rsx is like the 6800 pc card but with twice the transistors. 300 million. The 360 has 330 million transistors in the ATI custom card in the 360. So if we go just off of that. Well, you see the number difference. And thats straight from Nvidia's mouth. lol.....MS has never claimed to do more floating point than the ps3. Ps3 does more floating point operations. But what devs have said is that is optimal for CG animation and not game code. The games will speak for themselves. I can't wait for people to see hand on at your local walmart or EB games. lol...lol....lol

Yeah, those are 3 great games coming soon. Dead Rising and Saints row this month. WOW...And the GOW trailer at the movie theatre is AMAZING. I have seen it twice now with two different movies. I just saw it again when I saw Miami vice the movie. The crowd was electric when the trailer was running. People are really excited that a console can make a game like that.

In October 2003, Atari announced that Unreal Tournament 2004 had been delayed...until 2004. Though it was originally slated for a February release, the latest installment in Epic Games' wildly popular PC shooter didn't make it to market until mid-March.

Now it appears that this year, Unreal fans will be feeling a sense of déjà vu vis-à-vis the latest installment in the series. Today, representatives for Midway Games, which took over Unreal publishing duties from Atari in July 2004, announced that Unreal Tournament 2007 will not be released in time for the 2006 holiday season.

"Right now, UT 2007 (PC) is slated to hit in the first half of 2007," the spokesperson told GameSpot. When it was announced in May 2005, the game had a broad "2006" release date. Since then, it has moved to a broader "winter" release window, which traditionally extends into the first few months of the following year. The new release window means the game could conceivably not ship until June 2007.

While frustrating for those hoping for an egg-nog-fueled yuletide fragfest, the delay will hopefully allow Epic to fine-tune UT 2007's gameplay much like it did with its predecessor. When UT 2004 finally did ship, it was one of the most critically acclaimed PC titles of the year. Since then, it has become one of the most popular PC shooters on the market and has been a prime draw at many gaming tournaments.

As for the PlayStation 3 version of Unreal Tournament 2007, its ship date remains undetermined. Interestingly, though, Midway's response did not mention the PlayStation 3 version by name. "The next gen version(s) [of UT2007] have yet to be tagged with an exact ship date yet." Earlier this year, PSM magazine had claimed that UT 2007 would be a launch title for the PS3, which goes on sale in the US on November 17.

When asked if the mention of multiple next-gen editions meant UT 2007 might be coming to the Xbox 360, the rep demurred, saying, "Nothing is yet confirmed ... [but] I would say that your assumption is relatively plausible." At the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2006, Midway CEO David Zucker said the game was being released for "for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3," but the company has subsequently refused to confirm the game is coming to Microsoft's platform.

Speaking of the 360, UT 2007's delay means the sole release from Epic this year will be for the next-gen console. Gears of War, Epic's third-person sci-fi/horror shooter, is scheduled for a holiday 2006 release--for now, anyway. A "big announcement" regarding the game is expected later this week.

This July we were finally treated with several solid titles on the Xbox 360. There's the two-player classic NCAA Football 07, the awesome online play of Chromehounds, and even a decent flight-sim in Over G Fighters. But two titles would duke it out for this month's award: Battle for Middle-earth II and Prey. Not taking anything away from LOTR:BFME2, but Prey's gravity-warping gameplay tantalized us from the start. Prey, dear friends, is the winner.

The architectural benefits of the Radeon X1900 series really shine when you start to combine antialiasing with high-dynamic-range rendering. We compared images from the Radeon rendered at 1600x1200 with 4xAA and 16xAF, while the Nvidia setup could only run at 1600x1200 with 16xAF. Nvidia's cards are not able to run antialiasing with certain high-dynamic-range titles. As for the images, they speak for themselves. ATI's output is superior simply because it can apply antialiasing, thus making all of the edges smooth.

Both setups perform identically, unless there are those among us that can visually differentiate between a single percentage-point of difference. The Radeon machine walks away with an easy victory once we enabled antialiasing, since 3DMark06 does not output a result for the Nvidia setup as it cannot run the test.

Once we enabled antialiasing, ATI swept the field with 3DMark06. Nvidia's implementation cannot compete if you want both HDR rendering and antialiasing at the same time.

Keep in mind that Nvidia's GeForce 7900 GTX cannot render certain games with both antialiasing and HDRL enabled at the same time. As we showed in 3DMark06, the Radeon X1900 XTX CrossFire's ability to perform both of these functions at the same time improved image quality greatly. The list of HDRL games isn't long at the moment, but it will keep growing.

If you play on a 30" LCD that supports resolutions of up to 2560x1600, antialiasing won't be of much use if you want to maintain a decent frame rate with all of the eye candy turned on. On the other hand, if you're still using a 19" LCD with a maximum resolution of 1280x1024, you might not need two video cards. When it comes to upgrading your computer, remember to build evenly-- there's no point in spending $1200 on a pair of video cards if you're still using a $300 monitor.

Thats why the embedded ram in the ATI custom card for the 360 is so important and the unified shaders. HDR and AA are critical to overall game performance and Nvidia's top card...more powerful than the RSX...the 7900 card can't even do HDR and AA at the same time. WOW.... The Rsx is like the 6800 geforce from a year ago. lol....

The PS3 has 22.4 GB/s of GDDR3 bandwidth and 25.6 GB/s of RDRAM bandwidth for a total system bandwidth of 48 GB/s.

The Xbox 360 has 22.4 GB/s of GDDR3 bandwidth and a 256 GB/s of EDRAM bandwidth for a total of 278.4 GB/s total system bandwidth.

Why does the Xbox 360 have such an extreme amount of bandwidth? Even the simplest calculations show that a large amount of bandwidth is consumed by the frame buffer. For example, with simple color rendering and Z testing at 550 MHz the frame buffer alone requires 52.8 GB/s at 8 pixels per clock. The PS3's memory bandwidth is insufficient to maintain its GPU's peak rendering speed, even without texture and vertex fetches.

The PS3 uses Z and color compression to try to compensate for the lack of memory bandwidth. The problem with Z and color compression is that the compression breaks down quickly when rendering complex next-generation 3D scenes.

HDR, alpha-blending, and anti-aliasing require even more memory bandwidth. This is why Xbox 360 has 256 GB/s bandwidth reserved just for the frame buffer. This allows the Xbox 360 GPU to do Z testing, HDR, and alpha blended color rendering with 4X MSAA at full rate and still have the entire main bus bandwidth of 22.4 GB/s left over for textures and vertices.

Thats a big reason to why games for the 360 look better than the ps3 games. This screen shot is an example of HDR and Full screen AA in full use due to tech thats only found in ATI brand GPU's. Wow. It don't mean ps3 games will suck. In game just won't look as good as 360 ingame graphics. Couple the ps3's lack of HDR and AA with the lack of texture ram in comparisson to the 360. The facts speak. The screen shots speak. You can ignore the truth. Or accept it.
