Bit-tramp: Microsoft Press conference, Our thoughts

Bit-tramp writes: "We have just got done watching Microsoft’s E3 conference, and well – we have some very strong thoughts on it. We saw the first gameplay footage of Metal Gear Solid: Rising, Gears of war 3, Halo: Reach and.. well that was more or less it till we saw Forza 4 in the middle of the Kinect games. For what we really think Microsoft’s E3 press conference this year, follow the link through!"

and alienate their current audience, biggest mistake sony could do ill turn to PC gaming.

dreadful e3 by microsoft, absolutely no games just dis-kinect

Will-UK5850d ago (Edited 5850d ago )

Not even the most extreme 360 fanboys can say it was a good show

Edit: Actully ill probally get proven wrong below its n4g home of fanboys lol

Milky Joe5850d ago

Oh yes they can.

They'd just be lying =P

LaChance5850d ago (Edited 5850d ago )

I give their show a C.

Kinect was cool, if its not too expensive I see myself getting one eventually, the dance game was the best. Makes me wonder what the hell did that Cirque de Soleil show was for...all they had to do was show Kinect like did right now, oh well.

Gears 3: excellent

Reach: Very good

Kingdom: Looks interesting.

Fable 3: looks very good too.

Sadly thats it. Horrible show IMO at least for core gamers. Not a single new game except for Kingdom but no gameplay.

At least it wasnt worse than the Ninty conferences. What was MS thinking ? Coming to E3 with no games = FAIL.

Cevapi885850d ago

imagine if Sony had held off announcing all of the exclusives they have already revealed for e3......DAMN MS would be in tears....i hope they have new IPs in the works and a lot of GAMEPLAY videos....and if they are going to focus on Move, give us games that we will care about, games that will make us go whoaaa, now that looks like something i can do with a motion controller....SOCOM has me excited, just keep it going in that direction...that is all i ask

knight6265850d ago

wow this xbox conferenence was boring not sure wat was more boring this or james cameron talking about avatar nothing shocked me mayb the new design for the xbox but that didnt even impress the crowed until the heard they getting on for free.

HolyOrangeCows5850d ago

After the first 3 or so games shown, I was bored as heck.

The Wood5850d ago

La chance surprises me.

Ill judge MS after the whole shows over but as it stands they've not done much although the games they did show may be great games i was expecting a touch more.

snoopy rocks people

I am curious to the opinions of those who disagreed with you Jamie Foxx.....

Sure, it would have been a casual players dream...with the tiger thing and the workout game for Kinect....

but for the hardcore people? What was there?...yes there was reach, Gears 3, and CoD....but come on no hardcore player can honestly say that was a good conference...only the casual player can.

boodybandit5850d ago

The only problem is E3 isn't geared towards the casual gamer.
I don't get what MS was thinking. They have to have more than that, don't they?

wiggles5850d ago

I don't know haha. I was really disappointed with what they came out of the gate with...

I mean this whole week Sony has been dropping bombs...and I thought Microsoft would be the silent one in the corner holding something huge up their sleeve....

I guess not...I really hope Sony brings the pain, or at least Nintendo has something better, that conference was painful...we should ask MS to give US the Xbox360 slims for having to watch the damn thing lol..

I mean hell I stopped watching for 10 minutes and I really didn't miss anything other then the fact that Kinect can listen to your voice and that you can call someone...

Graey5850d ago

I would go so far as to say the casuals can not as well.

vhero5850d ago

Worst show ever for MS I think as only had 1 highlight and that was the redesign and no exceptional surprises like last year. Shame really.. We all knew they would show Kinetic stuff but to be fair they still got an entire press conference for that alone so why show it at that one??

boodybandit5850d ago

I came away thinking MS is on the verge of abandoning the hardcore audience like Nintendo did. Other than the usual suspects, where were the GAMES MS? The only way Sony wont have a better show is if they only focus on Move or don't show up!

Sony announced more games before E3 than MS showed today!

I am officially disgusted and I never thought I would say that about a MS press conference. The mind blowing surprise announcement to end the show was redesigned 360 that still has a disc tray and for all we know an external power supply. At least it's piano black, I guess.

Ps_alm3k5850d ago

We already have 5-6 tittle from sony that are already being close to release date; like socom4, killzone 3, gran turismo etc, that are being release in between now and a year.

So Jamie? did they alienate the current audience?

on top of that, these *Core games* are being used by the move controller,
So the real question is... Can the move controller work with those games??

My opinions says yes, therefore go look at ign sococm with move hands on.

PirateThom5850d ago

I think it was pretty embarrassing more than anything. Not bad, since the presentation was good... but it was obviously focused on a casual audience, the audience who DON'T watch E3 (and I will reiterate this every time an E3 conference doesn't have enough gaming content).

Omega45850d ago

It was broadcast in Time Square btw

PirateThom5850d ago (Edited 5850d ago )

I don't live in Time Square.

You can show whatever you want on a big screen, doesn't mean people will watch or that it belongs there.

D4RkNIKON5850d ago

oh that's why they didn't feel the need to impress real gamers.

mgsfan5850d ago

those where some of the most boring hours of my life i mean dam it started off good but when they went on for like 1/2 an hour with no games then f'in skittles comes on ...... i nerly gave up

Graey5850d ago

HAHAHA Priceless....skittles...LMFAO

UP5850d ago

can someone explain the skittles thing to me i did not se the press conference.

Al Bundy5850d ago

This was the worst E3 conference I've ever seen in my life. Where was the huge megaton bomb that we were promised? Was it the timed exclusive COD map pack deal? Fail!!!

RememberThe3575850d ago

This about how Nintendo would have done it. Boring and anticlimactic.

JEDI WOLVERINE5850d ago (Edited 5850d ago )

This still holds out against competition from MS and Ninty

Omega Zues5850d ago

You missed out on the entire Skittles part.

That will give me nightmares for years to come.

Timed exclusivity for all CoD DLC for the next 3 years. WOWWWW! FANCY!

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio51d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing51d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9251d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit51d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing51d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9251d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay53d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn254d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers54d ago (Edited 54d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn253d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown53d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos54d ago (Edited 54d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay53d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay53d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac53d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger54d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300054d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde54d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood53d ago (Edited 53d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde53d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_52d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
