Embarrassing, Microsoft

And there we were, then. Dressed in white ponchos with broad shoulders. Surrounded by jungle effects, Hollywood celebrities and acrobatic players from Cirque de Soleil. In the middle of the floor, with stands on three sides. When Microsoft showed this motion-based, controller-solving Kinect technology (formerly Natal) they denied the gaming journalists from around the world to actually be journalists. We were instead participants in the show - several of us were even gone out and played with the acrobats.

I have never felt so embarrassed at a press event ever.

MS must learn that gamers want games not circus atractions or movie stars and singers .

Gothdom5726d ago

I think MS lost touch of either reality or their consumers.

captain-obvious5726d ago

this event was shit
they have to make up for it after 5 hours

ryuzu5726d ago (Edited 5726d ago )

Well this is MS trying to compete with the somwhat obscure Sony marketing of years past.

Looks like they aren't making a good job of it either :/

Still, if you've got no games to show (choreographed movement to game video in a realtime motion game - wtf!) then I guess creating a noise with some non-gaming stuff gets a few people looking your way.

r.

El Botto5726d ago

lmao welcome to 2007, monkeys.

360 is standing on its last legs. For over a year we heard the bots excuse about Natal. We told them: "you have no games. Youre playing 2005 games on your consoles"

To which they replied: "Alan wake & Natal."

Alan never woke up, it flopped. And Natal is heading the same way fast.

Whats the latest excuse now? They been playing air for the last 2 years. They still be playing air 3 years from now.

sikbeta5726d ago

@scofios

That's the Exact same thing I was thinking, Cirque De Soleil was just an attraction or a distraction seeing how MS used it as a Way to impress people with The Whole Show rather than with natal/kinect

ATLGAMER5726d ago

The first 2-3 years MS has been on it...the last few years they have been slacking

UltraNova5726d ago

Jesus its like Hell's gates are open and Satan along with his demons are free to unleash havoc and eternal pain on Microsoft!

LOL Ok I may have exaggerated a bit...:p

Is it just me or do all these negative impressions and criticism are somewhat reminding you of the global media assault on Sony and its PS3 way back 2006/7?

ThanatosDMC5725d ago

The circus and the jungle and everything else was to create distractions so that they dont see how bad Kinect really was. Too bad that someone recorded a vid of it though and it's all over the net.

Are you really going to let something like this ruin the fun this might bring to you who cares it's just a little lag. stop being picky nerds about crap like this. If there was some sort of party with kinect set up would you really come out and talk about the lag and how we shouldn't be playing this WOULD YOU? cut the crap and enjoy games

Somehow it would seem that microsofts idea of product promotion lies in the ability of the media to push it to the consumers. Looking back through the years, MS games have received loads of compliments from the mass media and these games sell very well.

However when a game doesn't get the kind of media push, it appears it doesn't do as well. Now people speculate check money affects the quality of journalism. Could this be true?

With this cirque de soleil event, it appears that MS may have been banking on amusing the experiences of the journalists with a one-of-a-kind event in hopes of bringing to light a positive outlook of kinect.

I say this only because Sony is the complete opposite in their method of product pushing,. Most of sonys devices and games are announced early or shown to public (not necessarily just journalists and not necessarily behind closed doors), with the exception of Gt5 (with it's various demo builds) but at least that game has been playable in some form at many public expositions. Also a lot of journalistic opinion of Sony products have mostly been hit-or-miss, with really positive products also gathering very positive consumer ratings, while negative items genuinely leave a sour impression.

Heisenberg5726d ago

MS has given up on us.... It's easier and cheaper to satisfy and trick kids and housewives. I saw this transition coming a mile a way... Nintendo's situation looked too damn sweet for MS to ignore.

avengers19785725d ago

HA, HA, HA, did MS xbox just give up, or is it me.

SpLinT5725d ago

how are they giving up? Looks to me like they are trying their best to take the millions of Wii owners (you know, the #1 console with motion controls) .

WLPowell5725d ago

You're not going to win over the nintendo crowd with a Microsoft manufactured version of an eyetoy-like device sans Mario. I know this retarded direction totally makes sense to you just because Microsoft is doing it, but it would be surprising (to say the least)if this does well at all. (I have xbot friends who are PISSED, and seriously contemplating jumping ship... for life)

kanedaakira5725d ago

Did anybody notice during the Kinetimals presentation where the girl is petting the tiger thingy-creature. She has her hands cupped under with her palms facing upwards but on screen her hands appear totally different (with her palms facing downwards) - Just an observation of mine. If anybody wants to gif that up it would be cool.

Brewski0075726d ago

"Kinect is, based on what we saw Sunday night, Wii and EyeToy HD, neither more nor less."
I think that sums up the general press reaction to this launch. Very poor from microsoft if they're having the press come away with these thoughts.

mcslick1015725d ago (Edited 5725d ago )

I have never felt so embarrassed on a gaming site.

Just some more Fanboys bashing their nemesis. Pathetic, PlayStation 3? who the fuck wants the Wii for like twice the price? Microsoft? Who wants to pretend to be an animal (I'm impressed with the hardware but software? MS better stop being retards and stop having their rod in a contaminated pond) Wii? Again, who the fuck wants a Wii?

Looks like you fanboys better better stop play terrible games on terrible hardware. Get a decent PC, you can get one capable of playing Crysis on full at $400, and if you really wanna see good graphics, get Crysis 2 on the PC.

dizzleK5726d ago

ms NEEDS to nail the rest of the week. they're getting the most disappointment from the media i think i have ever seen, we're already hitting "giant enemy crab" level lulz here.

DaBadGuy5726d ago (Edited 5726d ago )

That damn crab haunts me to this day. Ever since they announced Cirque Du Soleil as part of the event I thought it smelled fishy and wondered what the hell it would turn out like, now I know. But no, nothing will ever reach the heights of that crab. Ah see what I did there, inadvertant pun. But seriously, Cirque Du Soleil I guess I can understand, they are world renowned and popular, ok fine. But......crabs......enemy crabs......giant enemy crabs. Every so often I look at my PS3 and imagine crab legs bursting out the side and then the thing shatters and a crab attacks me, except the crab has a Kevin Butler head and is wearing Joker makeup. That is my dream, that is my nightmare.

Microsoft Expects More Xbox Content and Services Revenue Decline Despite Game Pass Growth

During the conference call for Q2 of FY2026, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood talked about the future of the xbox business.

«partly offset by growth in Xbox Game Pass.»

I take it with a big grain of salt. They've been reporting nothing about GP, only words.

We still don't have any hardware numbers, no software units sold, no subscription numbers, no PC vs console GP, we don't have any profit numbers ... we literally have nothing but overall revenue and words.

Reaper22_18d ago

Does it really matter? Are you shareholder? Gamers have to stop acting like these companies owe us something. Its obvious everything is down. Thats completely normal in all businesses. It will be up and down again.

dveio18d ago

Yes, since they don't get tired spewing out word salad 12 months a year.

"Biggest launch", "millions of players", "growth of", "here look our revenue", "We buy ABK", "We'll bring you 1st party every quarter", "Biggest this, biggest that", "We always wanted to share games with everyone", "We're growing", "biggest launch", "millions of players", ... you get the point.

They either shut up.

Or deliver numbers like Nintendo, Playstation, hell even Tencent does.

On a sidenote:

Just years ago, Microsoft wanted to buy out a whole lot more than just Zenimax and ABK. They even wanted to push Sony out and collect Nintendo in.

You bet your butt I'm demanding numbers.

Christopher17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

In an article discussing industry matters, telling people to not worry or want better information on the industry is antithesis to the whole point of it. I'm going to try this out with all those review articles. I mean, who cares about scores, just try it out for yourself, that's the only opinion that matters.

dveio17d ago

«In an article discussing industry matters, telling people to not worry or want better information on the industry is antithesis to the whole point of it.»

Well.

That's it.

Case closed!

He might be a shareholder you can get a etorro or whatever online platform about and throw 20 bucks into Microsoft boom shareholder

BehindTheRows17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Yes, it matters. This is business! Some gamers have to stop acting like it only matters when the company they prefer wants to play ball.

Eonjay17d ago

The fact that shareholders are also in the dark im sure is also completely fine with you and Microsoft doesn't owe them anything either amirite? Not withstanding how silly and potentially inappropriate it is for someone to defend a public company from hiding sales information, you are also completely wrong.

@varora

Thank you.

For over 10 years we've been in those quarterly discussions.

Yet Nintendo and Playstation are the only manufacturers that deliver numbers, that deliver proof, that give us numerical baselines to either brag about or compliment them.

The only fraction that's been pulling doooozens of doooozens, hundreds and thousands of word salad bribberish comments out of their Xbox'clestotitis fan cloud is the die hard Xbox community.

And by doing that they're even defending that downward spiral Xbox is suffering from.

Bring the numbers buddies, or else just stfu.

Reaper22_17d ago

Nintendo and Playstation can deliver all the numbers they want. It doesnt matter much because hardware isn't the only way to make money in the industry. Maybe decades ago but not now. That's why you see sony putting more and more games on PC. They know its the games that keeps the money coming. Consoles stagnate but not the software.
The fact is that Microsoft was and is never gonna outsell them. The competition's console sales doesnt really affect Microsoft"s profit margin much if at all.. Look at how many more consoles sony sells and then go look at what they report in profit. The gap is nowhere near the gap in console sold. Hardware doesn't dictate market trends.

IRetrouk17d ago

Microsoft doesn't report xbox profit, so how can we compare them.......
Console sales lead to those software sales, thats not a theory its a fact, old days, these days... doesn't matter, one company is doing much better than the other, and thats partly because of said console sales...

rlow118d ago

I really think Call of Duty underperforming, the raise in subscription prices and Hoods ridiculous expectations of 30% return. Is what led to the lower numbers.

Reaper22_17d ago

Maybe, but COD sold 8 million on xbox which counted for 40% of the sales.

IRetrouk17d ago

Not even close to being true

BehindTheRows17d ago

Show us the article/sources with these sales numbers.

Chevalier17d ago

Could you show us the profit charts while you're at it? Would love to see this 'gap' you mentioned. Should be easy to show that right?

Eonjay17d ago

This whole report is confusing to me until I remember content and service are separate. Content went down... okay we get that because COD 'bombed' but Services went up because of the price increase which mitigated most of the lost from the cancelations. Okay got it.

I wouldn't blame the results on Amy but she sure as hell had unreasonable expectations.

GamePass has put Xbox in a bad position where the absolutely need PlayStation to make their numbers. So if a big game like COD bombs... they got a problem.

The fact that their service revenue (GamePass) can't drive growth on its own is a huge red flag. That was supposed to be the whole point.

Pretty surprising on revenue and content being down. Obviously hardware being down is expected, but you'd think that the GamePass price hike, CoD, and things such horizon 5 coming to PS5 would drive things up. No wonder MS is all-in on the multiplat strategy, don't really have choice at this point. There might be another GP price hike this year.

SimulationDaily18d ago

COD is likely the issue. It appears BO7 is doing significantly worse than BO6. Game Pass is apparently growing, so the problem isn't there.

18d ago
SimulationDaily18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

@Varora: What you "hear" (from your uncle who works at Nintendo?) is irrelevant when the CFO of Microsoft says the opposite in the conference call.
Incidentally, "content and services" are down, not just services, which include Call of Duty. If you don't know how to interpret financials, don't try 😂

Kurt Russell18d ago

I noped my way out on the last price hike. Whilst Ultimate was convenient for a while being also able to Play on PC, it became too rich for my blood.

CrashMania18d ago

Wonder how the goalposts will be moved this time, it shifted from exclusives and console sales, to revenue, where now then.

Lightning7718d ago

No goal post. It was down last January also. Amy Hood predicted this was gonna happen. You gave us and downs, that's simply how it works.

ocelot0718d ago (Edited 18d ago )

Think it was down last January but I don't know why. There is probably a genuine reason for it.

DivineHand12518d ago

There is no incentive to buy into a closed ecosystem with no exclusives. I wish they would just make windows lite or steam os bootable on the Xbox so long time fans who still own the console can get some enjoyment.

Lightning7718d ago

Closed ecosystem? How's it closed?

__y2jb18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

All consoles are closed eco systems. This in itself is not a problem but a closed eco system without exclusives is pointless when there’s alternatives that have them.

NotoriousWhiz18d ago

That's why xbox's next (and final) "console" will actually be a PC.

Christopher17d ago

This is also why Microsoft has been marketing really hard for the elimination of exclusives in general. They are out of the console business and into publishing games and subscription services. They need exclusives to die so they can end the battle with console markets.

Lightning7717d ago

@yb it's games and services are are on PC, tablets, phones and TV's not just found on Console. Even it's games are on other systems.

It's not closed at all. It's games going everywhere is probably the worst idea MS did you're right about that.

Christopher17d ago

You do know that DivineHand is talking about the hardware losses, not the games, right? The hardware is a closed system. It has seen two digit declines each year for at least 3 years in a row.

derek18d ago

And Microsoft wants to release another super expensive console next gen? Bizzaro world economics over there. Phillip Bartholomew Spencer will be promoted on the strength of these loses. Lol

TriniOutsider18d ago

Their next console has to be released. I could only imagine how much R&D they've already put into their next platform.

derek18d ago

Sunk-cost fallacy in action.

__y2jb18d ago

Yes let’s release so we can lose even more money!

Eonjay18d ago

Its a PC.. I don't think they spent a lot of money to R&D the idea of releasing a prebuilt PC. And they are not subsidizing it so by that token I don't see any reason why they wouldn't release it unless they pivot from hardware altogether.

NotoriousWhiz18d ago

They're just releasing a PC. And they don't intend to subsidize the cost so it's going to priced like any other PC and probably expected to ship PC-like numbers and not the many millions that consoles sell. After that, they'll eventually go third party and xbox hardware will be a thing of the past. Sega says hi.
