Blue Dragon Review

So much has changed for the Xbox brand since February 24, 2005. That was the day when the world first learned that Japanese gaming legend Hironobu Sakaguchi (creator of Final Fantasy and formerly one of Square Enix's most successful producers) would be making two next generation games for Microsoft. Currently these are role-playing games (RPGs) meant for the Xbox 360, and one of them has finally been released to the delight of English-literate gamers in the East.

That game is Blue Dragon and this version is the 2nd Asian region release, now packed with full English text/subtitles as well as Japanese and Korean voiceovers. As it turned out, Blue Dragon is a heavyweight joint collaboration between Microsoft (publisher), Mistwalker (Sakaguchi's studio), Artoon (game development and coding), Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball Z creator and character designer) and Nobuo Uematsu (musician responsible for Final Fantasy soundtracks). With their combined efforts, I myself had pretty high expectations for this game and for two years I have waited. Let's not forget that Sakaguchi and Toriyama worked together in the classic Chrono Trigger.

I don't know if I'm going to buy the game yet, but definitely plan on renting it. It's good to see a very positive review of the game. Hopefully it's as good as this review implies; if so, then I will most definitely buy.

Yea, I'm really interested in Lost Odyssey but I'm really not looking forward to this game at all. The game looks kind of bland to me & I don't like the art style. I don't mind the traditional gameplay but nothing about the game really seems engaging :-(

Download the playable demo on XBL, so you can see for yourself.

Thump19676879d ago

Been waiting on this one already PD off and let the games begin

Marceles6879d ago (Edited 6879d ago )

Hmmm the game looks good, but I don't think I can completely trust an Xbox dedicated site. I'll wait for IGN or Famitsu to review it before I buy...

edit: never mind, Famitsu gave it a 37/40. Looks like I'll be getting it

JasonXE6879d ago

just because its a xbox dedicated site doesn't mean there going to screw around with the opinion of the game (except if its halo or pro console like sony protection group). Example: xe360.com, i just gave Project Sylpheed a 6.9/10 and Vampire Rain which i need to post a 0 or 1...gotta think about it.

The graphics in this game are AMAZING. Looks like a pixar movie. Must buy.

Xeoset6879d ago

Another Review that gave it a 9+/10

This time a 9.4!

Isn't it out in a week? Might pick it up for my birthday if it is.

Xeoset6879d ago

24th for Europe!
Same day as Bioshock and the Xbox 360 Elite though...I wanted both of them aswell. Dammit.

I've been wanted to revisit the game in the back of my mind for years and this is big. There's still a good handful of 360 games locked to the system I'd love to see now that the seal is broken on decompiling these games.

What these games need are remasters and to modern platforms. They're all unfortunately stuck on the 360.

MrBaskerville236d ago

They are available on series x as well. But would be nice to get them out even wider.

babadivad235d ago

You can play them on console. I have them loaded on my machine.

MrNinosan235d ago

Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon and FFXIII Trilogy is actually the only reason I still have my Series X.

Terry_B236d ago

Hey Phil..Why didn't remasters and pc ports happen many years ago already?

ABizzel1235d ago

Because Phil and team seem to enjoy going to websites and forums to see what fans are discussing and wanting, to earn good faith points with post like this while they continue to offer the bare minimum.

TheEroica235d ago (Edited 235d ago )

Remastered and remake games are lame... A gigantic "we don't know how to evolve original thoughts" from dev teams cashing in on old ip.... Make new stuff or gtfo.

neutralgamer1992235d ago (Edited 235d ago )

no remasters and remakes provide those games to new audiences and improve the look/gameplay

Michiel1989235d ago

you can't revive what never lived

-Foxtrot236d ago

Then…remaster / remake them

🤷🏻‍♂️

After renewed interest you can get Mistwalker to do a sequel to Lost Odyssey

jambola235d ago

Poor Microsoft could never scrape together funds to make that happen

babadivad235d ago

Is Mistwalker still a studio?

One of the best of that era. Great game, great adventure!

Kurisu991d ago

I bought this game a couple of days ago, along with Lost Odyssey, while they're on sale in the Xbox Store. I never had a 360 back in the day so I missed out on these games, so I'm glad that I'll finally be able to try them out soon on my Series S.

raWfodog991d ago

Yep, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and Gears of War were my favorite 360 games back when they first released.

Seraphim991d ago

no doubt. To this day it baffles me when this game gets hate. Sure it wasn't as epic as Lost Odyssey, but in it's own right it was a great game.

MrNinosan991d ago

Lost Odyssey is one of the best jrpgs of that era but got killed because it was bought up and released on the "wrong" console.

repsahj990d ago

Is there a chance that Lost Odyssey will be released on PS5? I really want to play it and Blue Dragon, too.

autobotdan990d ago

Both games are owned by Microsoft

andy85991d ago

Great game. The 360 had some really good turn based games back in the day. Absolutely loved Lost Odyssey too. I think they are both Sakaguchi creations.

ZwVw991d ago

Correction. Both Blue Dragon & Lost Odyssey (as well as Infinite Undiscovery) started off as in-house developed projects that went third party after MS killed off their Japanese development studios.

andy85991d ago

Doesn't really have anything to do with what I said though 😂 Sakaguchi wrote them both

Hofstaderman991d ago

This game together with Lost Odyssey, The Last Remenant and Tales of Vesperia convinced me to buy a 360. This game made my 2007 which ended off with mass effect.

CrimsonWing69991d ago

Honestly, a fantastic game, especially if you were a fan of old-school JRPGs. I hate that this genre rarely can come back to these roots.
