Why a 360 Slim is a bad idea

With E3 just around the corner, there has been a lot of rumors on the internet that Microsoft may be announcing an Xbox 360 Slim during their press conference. There are several reasons why a 360 Slim wouldn't be a good idea, however, and Microsoft would be making a mistake if they announced one at E3 this year.

1) MS will screw up the hardware

Since MS lost gazillion amount of money on RROD and did in some ways irreparable damage to the brand name, do you think they will screw up again? This companies have billions of dollars and they will hire in the experts to deal with this, what is that $300k/annually per person. A drop in the bucket!

There is no doubt in my mind that MS will make every effort to prevent such problems again because every company value profit the most.

2) The current hard drive will not fit inside a Xbox 360 slim.

What about sliding it on top of the machine or on the back with an angle design... There are so many different design ideas that I hardly think this is enough to deter someone from making a refresh especially when there is money to be made/saved.

With that said, usually leaks happen very early on and somebody will post a picture of something, but so far nada, zip, zilch.... I doubt there will be one and this is just another pipe dream.

gaffyh5828d ago

Those reasons could be true, but imo they are also reasons why a 360 slim would be a good idea for MS. e.g.
1. They can improve the hardware this time with proper testing and cooling.
2. They can rip off their consumers who want to upgrade to a slim by forcing them to buy a new proprietary HDD.

^ And they probably will do it, but don't expect it to be "slim," it could be smaller, but it won't be slimmer if they are keeping the HDD external especially.

The Wood5828d ago

did somebody hack ur account..:)

any change is good. I mean why cant MS use a slot drive. Its possible im just not sure how 'slim' it would actually be

Hallmark Moment5828d ago (Edited 5828d ago )

It's only a bad idea if the redsign revitalizes the competition but it's ok for your console of choice To have one :/ RROD? Lol Microsoft will have somebody like Toshiba or Samsung build the parts and even the design. Basically fanboy and the article logic says there would be a repeat for sure yet no one in their right mind would have assumed Sony would have launched a faulty PS2 Slim after PS2 hardware failures

Inside_out5828d ago Show
tplarkin75828d ago

It always pays to slim-down a console.

pixelsword5827d ago (Edited 5827d ago )

better hardware is the goal of a slim, but I don't know how or if it will impact sales. The PS3 already is leading sales worldwide despite it being more expensive, and the slim won't likely improve number crunching or critical performance, so although it will be nice for those who went without can now get a 360 with better hardware quality, it may not be a gamechanger.

I do want my brother to get a 360 for his kid, so this may be the final nail in the coffin for convincing him; so even my words are undermined easily... who knows? All I can say is good luck to MS I guess.

AAACE55827d ago (Edited 5827d ago )

Does he even own a 360 or is he a fanboy?

OK, he said a slimmer one will create lots of problems again. He said the Ps2 slim had overheating problems and Disc Read Errors. I went through 5 Ps2's because of the DRE problem. It finally stopped when I got a Ps2 slim! The newer chipset combined with the game install feature keeps the 360 running cooler and quieter. I am no longer worried about my console failing.

Another way you know he's uninformed is he said old HDD's won't work with a slim! This is true, but he said they will probably end up using "Old Fashioned Memory Cards". He must not have heard that you can now use flash drives now, which is basically a HDD!

Whoever posted this on here should have actually read through the article instead of just getting excited to post something negative!

edgeofblade5827d ago

My worry about a slim is that Microsoft will be rolling the dice yet again on a console that took years to fix. It's not worth the risk, in my honest opinion.

Also, the question of where a hard drive fits is an important consideration. Will it be a lopsided design or, heaven forbid, a tethered hard drive dock?

sikbeta5827d ago

IF MS make sure there will be no overheating problems and none of those things that can screw your console, is not a bad idea...

Is if a 360 slim suffers "RRoD" its going to hurt if not kill the brand. Likewise if the redesign includes a new HDD, a lot of people aren't going to be happy they can't just slap on the old ones.

FragMnTagM5828d ago

Also, have you ever heard of a USB cable? MS already has a transfer cable to fix your second imaginary issue. Good stealth troll attempt.

Biggest5828d ago

What about the current hard drives that people have already purchased is the question. So what that you can transfer the info. What happens with the $423.11 you already paid for a 10 gig hard drive?

poopface15828d ago

you know, the thing they enabled with an update to replace memory cards.

Godmars2905828d ago (Edited 5828d ago )

Just like they expected the contractor who made their DVDs drives to include the cheap pads that kept disks from being damaged. All that has to happen is for something to go wrong in the design process, they get parts from the wrong place, and its disaster.

And please tell this humble troll - *rolleyes* - what is someone suppose to do with their old styled 160GB HHD which they just bought as upgrade for a 20GB after they've transfered their info into a new slim-styled 160GB HHD. Sure bet that GS wont be accepting that many for trade on top of fat 360s.

edgeofblade5827d ago (Edited 5827d ago )

See, I find the "new-style" hard drive to be likely. Apple, Sony, Nintendo... they usually talk about how users aren't "expected" to upgrade, but they know there will be a loyal contingent that will.

As it pertains to Microsoft, they might tow the same line, but miss out on the subtleties of that core audience that wants the upgrade. This likely hard drive scenario will likely break that, unless they make it like the PS3.

I'm going to go with the unpopular "Microsoft is not an idiot" position, and suggest that, IF Microsoft decides to Slim-ize the 360, it will have a user-replaceable, non-proprietary-housing hard drive.

And that will be the primary selling point... a selling point that won't be backwards compatible to 360 Fat.

Zezo5828d ago

...they can't even make a reg 360 without overheating, for them to make a slim would be like a miracle. Mind boggling.

GameOn5828d ago

Well i guess we will see if MS can pull off miracles soon.

southernbanana5828d ago (Edited 5828d ago )

Microsoft replaced my launch Xbox 360 at their cost when it decided to die on me. I'm also on my second PS3 because my Phat model died on me. I bought a PS3 slim at my cost. I went through two PS2s at my cost due to the DVD drives. I like my PS3 but I am so tired of people who only own one console bringing up the Xbox PROD all the time. Microsoft did what they could to help the consumer even if it was to avoid a massive recall. Back on topic.... A slim is always a good idea no matter who manufactures the hardware!

steve30x5828d ago

Im still on my first 60GB PS3 that I got four years ago. I am on my second Xbox 360 though and I hope my current Xbox 360 dont die for a while yet.

steve30x5827d ago

I dont understand why some people found it necessary to disagree with my last comment. There is absolutely nothing there you can disagree with.

CaptainMarvelQ85828d ago

get rid of the huge Power Brick

Redlogic5828d ago

the only worry I would have over this, is will a smaller xbox keep more susceptible to over heating issues? I feel like if the original did, why wouldn't the slim one?

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio23d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing23d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9223d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit23d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing23d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9223d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay25d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn225d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn224d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown25d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay25d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay25d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac24d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger25d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300025d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde25d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde24d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_24d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
