Rumor: Valve’s E3 surprise is Source Engine 2

VG247: A source close to VG247 has revealed that Valve’s “surprise” at E3 will be the unveiling of Source Engine 2.

jay25795d ago

It better be a much better engine.

Eamon5795d ago

It should be. The Source engine was a huge leap from their old one.

Corrwin5795d ago

Their old one for Half Life was modified Quake 1 engine... Anything was better than that!

In terms of features though, Source didn't have anything other engines didn't already have (aside from maybe facial expressions) - In fact it was a step backwards in some places: No real-time reflections (like in a mirror or water surface), they invested a great deal in multiple camera angles, but we didn't see much of it until Portal.

Conloles5795d ago

Hell yes this will be awesome, cant wait to see the full power unleashed on PC

meetajhu5795d ago

I think this is the reply Valve is got for PS3 owners. An optimized engine to run on PS3 which the Source was not able to do properly. Innovation starts from Playstation brand! I remember buying Half-life 1 for ps2 with better graphics.

Olly5795d ago

Gabe sounds pretty much like he doesn't like the PS3 as a platform and what it 'stands for' from what he's said.
I wouldn't go thinking this is the answer just yet, though it may have been developed as a cross-platform engine. Actually, now I think about it you sound about right. Maybe they made sure they made an engine they knew would work for the PS3 since they released the first two episodes on the PS3 and kinda need to release the third.

Eh, we'll see XD.

gtamike5795d ago

It's Half Life 2 running on project natal, cause there was a leaked video about 3 months ago. (someone playing)

Inside_out5795d ago (Edited 5795d ago )

Well, whatever engine they make, it will be PC architecture...Cell Processor is a thing of the past...Sony has already said it will not use the cell in the next PS....still...Valve would be crazy to ignore 35 million gamers on PS3...they would make good customers on their bread and butter Steam enterprise... ;~D

zaz125795d ago

WOW this fanboy does not know anything

DeadlyFire5795d ago

Sony has said no such thing. IBM says they are done with advancing Cell technology. There is a new line up of Cell chips for 2010 and then IBM is out.

They could easily setup Source 2 engine for PC, X360 and PS3.

ProjectVulcan5795d ago (Edited 5795d ago )

Source is a good, efficient flexible engine on PC. It doesnt seem to work well on the consoles though. The likes of left 4 dead on 360 miss out on a lot of the Pc visual effects, and run without anti aliasing etc. However, you can get all that on an exceptionally low end Pc graphics card, technically slower than 360's GPU. Even a radeon 4550 runs a lot of source games better than 360 (its not even what i would call a gaming card per se, its a HTPC product) although source can be quite CPU bound, which might explain this.

I think if valve realy want to exploit the consoles further this generation, they need some serious modification of source. Either a version of the engine heavily optimised for console, or a complete new package with more console bias

SKCShifty5795d ago

What am i suppose to do with a engine? i wanna play a game like Half a friggin Life 3 not no damn engine.

TheIneffableBob5795d ago

Obviously a game will be built with the engine.

kaos_fish II5795d ago

Yeah, but knowing Valve, how long will it be until we see said game..?

young juice5795d ago

garrys mod 11(12)?

but you wouldnt know about that since your pc cant even handle the oldest, funnest most pc friendly engine in the world

Harry1905795d ago

like something that would be announced at GDC rather than E3.

TheIneffableBob5795d ago

The primary announcement will be a game, probably Half-Life 3, and that game will be built on Source Engine 2, so I think E3 is fine for this kind of announcement.

Jacobite5795d ago

they would be needing new engine by now

Valve only wants to make HalfLife if they push medium forward but what could it push forward next?

If Half-Life 3 ever happens, what big innovation would justify it in Gabe Newell's eyes?

-Foxtrot351d ago

Innovation doesn’t always have to be a VR game, look at one of the rumours for HL3 that someone was saying earlier last week

"Procedural generation (ie. L4D Director) and advanced AI will be pushed by HLX. "

"“The 'procedural generation' in HLX does not relate to terrain or roguelike-ish mechanics but something like the Left4Dead director made "significantly more powerful". Doors, physics props, enemies, enemy types items, NPCs of any kind will be influenced by said director"

That to me is pretty significant if it's done well, that along with better enemy AI, physics and the like are what games should be evolving more but they always choose graphics mostly. The fact that it keeps circling back to only VR is the way forward when it comes to Valve is silly in my opinion.

VR can be a choice but it shouldn't be "VR only because VR is the only innovation we have left"

Levii_92351d ago

No, and they already did that.

gold_drake350d ago

ew no

there are other ways im sure

Vits351d ago

Just go back to what made Half-Life 2 special: the physics.

At the time, it was groundbreaking and arguably influenced a wave of other games that started to experiment with more interactive and dynamic environments. For a while, physics-based gameplay became a trend. But if you've played any first-person shooters in the last decade, you've probably noticed that most developers have either abandoned those ideas entirely or significantly toned them down. The focus shifted away from immersive world interaction toward faster pacing, scripted set pieces, and visual spectacle.

And while you're at it, ship it with a robust modding tool. That’s another thing most developers have completely given up on. It could offer a much-needed alternative to the current AAA landscape, which feels increasingly trapped in a cycle of cinematic universes and safe, homogenized content. In a world of "Marvelized" blockbusters, a game that draws inspiration from the experimental spirit of the late 1990 and mid-2000s wouldn’t just be nostalgic,it would be genuinely fresh. Ironically, looking back might be the most forward-thinking move a studio could make right now.

Chocoburger351d ago

Here's something innovative, finish the God damn story. Wow, a concept! Locking a series behind forced innovation is stupid, and stupidity is not innovation.

ZycoFox351d ago

They can have the game be slightly less linear but not too open. HL2 had parts like that, then Episode 2 did it a bit more.

That and expand upon the physics & AI system and further increase the graphics over Alyx and that's pretty much all they gotta do. I hope they release a separate multiplayer part after if not immediately as well, like they did shortly after HL2 released.

Lamusiqa350d ago

1. Dynamic AI for NPC - Supporting character AI that responds to your voice in real-time. Imagine getting pinned down and then just say "Alyx, throw a smoke grenade and give me covering fire!" and then she does it after responding "OK!". How about having a conversation with Alyx?

2. FOV graphical render using NVMe SSD - A graphics rendering feature that is built-in the game engine so that your GPU and CPU only renders what player is seeing. Current graphics engine renders the world beyond the FOV because of hardware limitations in immediate rendering as you pan your camera/view. Having a graphics rendering system that renders graphics instantly and only what you're seeing allows for richer, more detailed worlds or less RAM usage.

Don't do this.

I've waited 100 years

_SilverHawk_354d ago

hopefully its a vr game or has the option to play in vr

TheColbertinator354d ago

The second option hopefully. I haven't played Alyx VR since the VR goggles hurt my eyes.

LordoftheCritics354d ago

Alyx VR was incredible.

Still unmatched

-Foxtrot354d ago

VR as an option - Totally fine.

VR Only - No thanks

I've been a Half Life fan since the original and have waited since 2007 for a sequel, it was already a kick to the nuts to have Half Life Alyx, a game which changes the ending of Episode 2 and will clearly be required to understand the story going forward in HL3, be a VR only title so I don't want a proper, full on sequel to be VR only aswell, it would be highly unfair to the HL fans who either don't like VR, can't afford it or can't do it for whatever reason.

Luckily going off the rumours, HL3 is a more traditional game.

FPS_D3TH353d ago (Edited 353d ago )

Sybau! Lol jk but please only the option. I’m still not buying vr today lol

Amplitude353d ago

It'll probably be VR exclusive with full body tracking sensors and a treadmill required to play

Now we know, why GTA VI got delayed.
Gabe Effect.

ZycoFox354d ago

I wonder if the rumours are true - that it has a highly destructible environment and very reactive with hot/cold with realism placed on wind and other physics, I guess it makes sense, HL2 was very impressive at the time and it carried over into GMOD. That's what I really liked about it, everything built into the engine.

The only thing that might slightly disappoint me is if they don't upgrade the graphics more. I like that Source and Source 2 has such a clean look, I just hope they push it so it's more like Source 2.5 if they haven't budged it up to Source 3. Being (supposedly) the game to finish the original story I hope they go all out if they can while maintaining high frame rates with modern hardware.

badz149353d ago

Source 3? Bold of you to assume Gaben knows how to count to 3

PRIMORDUS354d ago

If this is true I'm going to guess it would be still using the Source 2 engine.

SimpleDad353d ago

I hope!!! Dude... let's go! Can't wait!

RaidenBlack353d ago

We haven't seen the best of Source 2, yet.
No really.
Checked some threads, many features are still WiP.

Plagasx353d ago

GTA 6 and Half Life 3 releasing in the same year?? IMPOSSIBLE.

FPS_D3TH353d ago

6 hours too soon bro. GTA delayed to next year

Profchaos353d ago

It just seems so impossible that after so many years and so many false leaks and rumours this might be it.

I don't know how to feel about this the game has so much weight on it in terms of expectations now half life alyx was amazing so I think they can do it but they would be feeling the pressure

Half-Life 3 Is A Call For More Series To End

If Half-Life ends with 3, it should be a call for more series to wrap it up.

Oh i agree.
Especially CoD and them annual sport titles 😎

PRIMORDUS387d ago (Edited 387d ago )

Me to I want HL 3 to be the last in the series, it will probably still use the Source 2 engine but I would guess heavily modified. Then you know Valve will release some kind of collectors edition that includes all the games, then years later more remasters 😂

goken387d ago (Edited 387d ago )

Me too. At the rate valve release games, if they did HL4, it would be something like 2050 😱😱😱

goken386d ago

Not only CoD will never end, many of it’s spinoffs never seems to end either.
