We’ve had point and click adventures, first-person shooters, 3D space sims and even an MMO. But a sprawling, galaxy-spanning, single-player RPG/adventure hybrid? That never happened before Star Control II, one of the most fondly-remembered PC games of the early 90s.
OX: " Imagine the infinitesimal chance of stumbling across sentient humanoid alien life in this vast universe, then imagine the probability it would look exactly like a sexy human lady, except blue or green. Discover the alien races that by staggering coincidence looked like beautiful human women in the following video. "
Carl Williams writes, "Okay, who remembers the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer console? The one from the early to mid-90’s that was going to revolutionize gaming with all kinds of things that didn’t come true. One thing did come true on Trip Hawkens’ little console that he got everyone else to manufacture- we got one hell of a great game in Star Control II, brought over by Crystal Dynamics (the people behind many 3DO classics). This was space exploration/battles at its best and it was only on the 3DO (as far as consoles are concerned). Eventually the 3DO port was opened to the community and ported BACK to PC and called “The Ur-Quan Masters”. This port is now available in HD thanks to even more dedicated fans."

Kotaku - "A couple of weeks ago, I headed up a massive, crowdsourced list of the best PC games of all time. This week, we added what will probably be our final update. I didn't expect that the list become as massive as it did, nor did I expect that a couple of games would emerge as clear favorites."
Umm, lots of gamers would argue (me included) that Star Control II was in fact the better game. But hey! the fact that this list was even tried is good news.
I'm truly amazed at the depth of the game, and astounded I missed it the first time around.
I'm glad it's now Open Sourced, and if you liked the Planet Mining aspect of Mass Effect, you should try it out.
if we could have the MELEE part of the game on xsbox live or PSN as online multiplayer ...
I spent many many hours doing the campaign too ... love it !!!
