Its not looking good for the 360 hardware wise. It has the software as we all know... If they put the new 65nm chipset in there, everyone will be happy, hopefully.

Things have been looking bleak for M$ for a while now, especially since E3 '07.

Really though, will any of this matter come September? The Halo Effect doesn't just influence software sales, it will also affect hardware sales on a large scale. I'm confident M$ won't be announcing any losses come this fall.

I really don't care the PS3 can mop the floor with the 360 from now till the end of August, but then the real fight starts, considering either one of them could walk away with another 5 million console sales we'll just have to see.

So saying that the repairs and Peter Moore are the major factors here when my logic says the Wii and the PS3 are the major reason. Just my point of view.

The 360's holiday 2007 is about to crazy. HALO 3, GTA4, MADDEN 08, MASS EFFECT, BIO SHOCK, BLUE DRAGON and others will make sure of that.

Microsoft knew it was headed for trouble with this warranty and they were working on a solution. Why would they spend millions on marketing the 360 when they knew of this problem? It doesn’t make sense, so they didn’t.

Now they’ve got this problem fixed, they have the best software lineup for the rest of the year, they were able to charge the warranty costs into the last fiscal year and everything is set for a price drop and aggressive marketing campaign.

You don't win a console war in April, you win it in November & December.

I agree Msoft has time. I'm sure they'll announce the new chip, and I also think after the halo3 storm they'll announce a price drop right in time for the holidays nov, I say....

Enough said, whoever wrote the article is just making news; it's their jobs as journalists.

They really do have to fully adress the hardware problem though, prolonging the warranty isn't going to cut it. This isn't the PC operating system market, they don't have a monopoly and consistently releasing shoddy merchandise will come full swing if this isn't fixed soon.
MS has to know they are quickly losing their grip on the lead this gen, Sony and nintendo will run with the 360's issues and kick microsoft when they're down.
If MS waits another 6 months to fully fix the TROD for good the PR damage will be permanent.

This kind of drop is expected as the console is reaching maturity and there is increased competition in the marketplace. I imagine we will see a surge in 360 sales as the AAA titles are released later in the year and we approach the holiday season. Original IP's of good quality always push console sales. My only concern is that the release of Halo 3 will shake out the rest of the 360 consoles that have issues resulting in the RRoD. Gamers will be playing Halo 3 more than any other game on 360 to date and for longer periods of time. I believe this to be the real reason behind the timing of the extended warranty by MS. It would be a PR mess to announce it after the launch of halo 3 if there is in fact a surge in RRod failures.

MS lost the initiative. With the massive problems they have, they will need to re-launch when they release with the 65nm chip and prove that it is more reliable - otherwise the momentum will continue downwards. Just the way the market works. They most probably lost this generation already due to the RROD and disk scratches. They should really focus on making a very very reliable 65nm XB360, swallow the fact that sales will be less than before - but try to salvage their reputation. If the 65nm is crap too, then the prediction will be that the 720 will be a flop due to consumer distrust. All they can do for this generation is to try and salvage respectability.

Its obvious there are PS3 fanboys still looking to debunk MS's earnings news or trying to dumb down its importance so they can gather and comfort themselfs and vent now because once the 360 price drops with its game line-up and 3 year warrenty the PS3 will be in last place this whole generation and it scares the sh*t out of them for some reason.

Betting a price drop in the very near future. Timed just before Halo 3 release!

He didn't jump ship ,it was for personal reasons that the decision was made.Closer to family being one of these.

Do you guys really think more software will help XBOX 360 back from its sales. Look at it now, absolutely great software available and great lineup too but, not happening. Price cut might help abit, but it's their market perception of their hardware. A very fragile products, Mainstream users will tried to stay clear from it. Even though with 3 years warranty, Users still trying to avoid constant dealing with costumer services. Microsoft has to find a way to gain back users confidence. 3 year warranty is not good enough. I don't think recall will help any how if anything make it worse. They need to launch a new SKU and disown the current one, somehow like DS Lite. A redesign with new look and 65nm cheap and using strong marketting campaign to inform users about the new better and faster chip as well as sleeker/slimmer look will help and along with 3 year warranty. That will bring back user's confidence.

Microsoft needs to: 1) Let the public know that they've fixed the problem. 2) Announce a price drop. 3) Wait for its amazing fall lineup, which includes Halo 3.

Microsoft will be just fine. All 3 companies will have peaks and valleys, just look at Sony. They had a disastrous start with PS3, but they'll be just fine, as will Microsoft. The best thing Microsoft has going for it is its superior, unmatched gaming lineup and gaming experience. The hardcore gamers know that the 360 is the system to have.

lol at highPS3, XBL has got more content, more arcade games to play with and a hell of alot more things to buy or download for free off it then PSN. We get trailers, demos, videos, music way before you guys. I'm happy to pay £40 a year, which = £2 something a month. Very cheap eh?

As for games, the 360 has got alot of them already and many more to come. I think a price drop would help alot with the sales. Its been 2 years already and no price cut, the first Xbox had a price cut in like 2 months. As for the 360, mine is working well, I'm sure that there will be broken 360's like there will be some broken Wii's or broken PS3's.

I own a 360(3rd one)and am currently waiting on microsoft to repair it. Now with that said, I do have to give microsoft their props because microsoft told me that the 3 year warranty begins after they complete the current repair(not from the time of my original purchase, but from current repair) also they are giving out a free month of xbox live (assuming its the gold service, I will give it to my son)...So as much as I dislike microsoft and their consoles. I will go on the record to say "this is a cool thing". However, this move will not convert me from "The Dark Side" (PS3 OWNS!)

i sold my xbox 360 back in November last year to gamestop because of the hardware problems and i got tired of sending it in and i wasn't tempted to buy any games since it was a slow period for games and i was going to wait this year and buy a better 360 with Halo 3,PGR4,GTA4,Mass Effect,NBA 2K8,and all the better games for this year so to me it was worth the wait for me not to play games for 10 months.

Microsoft slowed down its shipments. MS only shipped 700,000 that quarter. We can all take guesses as to why. But it has absolutely nothing to do with the demand for the 360.

If anything it most likely has to do with them preparing for a price drop and the new and improved chipset so there are less problems in the future with the red rings.

MS has the ability to ship out 2 million a quarter if they wanted. But more isn't better if the failure rate is above average. Obviously MS is taking its time with its shipments. Most likely spending more time testing units before they ship them. Or whatever it is they do for quality control until they can get the improved systems with price cut shipped for Halo 2 and the Holiday season coming.

We can all speculate...But the fact remains that the 360 has a healthy lead at over 11.6 million sold.

I say sold clearly because thats what MS has stated numerous times. I believe MS over journalist with agendas.

I also believe NPD's sales figures which is right in line with MS's worldwide Sold statements.

The 360 continues to sell more consoles in Europe/Canada/Australia/and the Good ole USA every month. Even with MS shipping out less units as of late.

I can guarentee you one thing for sure. The month Halo 3 launches and beyond...MS will ship massive amounts of consoles...and most likely consoles at a cheaper price and improved quality.

With that said...I believe that Most 360 gamers have had the kind of luck I have had. I have 6 xbox 360's and 1 ELite. I haven't had one go bad yet. And if one did...I am extremely comfortable and happy with MS's 3 year warranty. And I would have hated to miss out on playing Forza 2, Lost Planet, Dead Rising, Crackdown, PGR, Dead or Alive 4, Oblivion...which I beat twice with all the expansions currently not available on the ps3, Saints Row, and so on and so on. I have clocked in 100's and 100's of hours in exclusive 360 content with friends and family. I wouldn't trade the fantastic experiences I have had for the world. I love Gaming. I enjoy Gaming. And I'm glad MS has addressed what ever issue they had...slowed down the shipments...and hopefully get the price cut ready with the improved 360's.

I brought an Elite on launch day because my launch 360 died three weeks before the Elite went on shelves. I just brought the Nyko Intercooler EX. I'm suprised, the little mofo works. It a little loud, but it's doing its job extracting the heat from the console. I think MS knows that they PO'ed some of their consumers. And all the consumers want a "better" 360. I prey this 65nm chip clears the smoke out of the air. Too many good games coming out for the 360 this year.

Most people don't care about news like this. Does anyone believe a mother or father or a non-hardcore gamer which by the way is a majority of gamers even read news like this. But they also have a decent install base. There are probably several million 360's already in the pipeline and they are gearing up for a new hardware configuration.

Let's mess with some numbers

Units sold: 10+ million.
Price: $400 a unit
Failure rate: ~30%

No recent news of reduced production costs for the xbox 360s out at the moment so it would be safe to assume current price is below COST PRICE. If this is so then they'll be making a loss for every console sold.

Now let's say the per unit loss is $50.

That would mean Microsoft has lost over $650 million. They would lose even more if they fully replace the faulty consoles.

Conclusion:

Things are not looking good.

Since they have not reduced the price already, after a year and a half, it would be safe to assume the xbox pricing is probably still below production cost and still making losses per unit sold.

So if they reduce the price now, they are going to make even greater losses.

This would work if they could drive out the competition but the Wii isn't going anywhere and especially not the Ps3 who has already started the price drop and good games are starting to come in.

Microsoft should just throw in the towel and focus on games development only - not consoles. Microsoft is a software after all. Sony specializes in hardware. Both companies should stick to what they know well.

Lets just have one console and many games not many consoles and many games. It's costing everybody.

MS has lost 1.2 billion this year, because of defective consoles (about 3 million).
So their is about 7 million consoles out there that have a pretty good chance of HAVING PROBLEMS.

The ps3 has been at 80k a month and at most 100k a month in the USA...and 40 to 50k a month in Japan...

The Ps3 is only selling approx...350k a quarter folks....But they are shipping millions....lol....So talk all you want about the lowest shipping month of its 2 year cycle at 700k....but when its all said and done its still massively outselling the "NEW" Ps3.

as someone that has owned every system since nintendo...minus gamecube and nintendo's units after that. I must say that, i've spent too much time on the sidelines and have decided to put in a small input. I also have PS3 and Xbox 360.

I'm on my second 360...and when i got my ps3, that is when i realised that my 360 sounds like my damn vacuum cleaner -.- but that's besides the point

Short breakdown of the followin years.

-Halo 3 comes out followed by halo 3 merchandise etc. Xbox sells LIKE CRAZY

-people begin to realise why M$ extended their warranty to 3 years as 360's overheat from chronic halo 3 playing.

-Halo 3 continues to be the only real game selling on 360.

-PS3s library of games begins to grow and it's sales increase as 360 sales begin to decrease even more due to the fact that halo 3 is just one game.

Keep in mind..sony is a company that knows how to win a console war. Microsoft is a company that knows how to throw a system out there and lose billions of dollars doing so(ex. Xbox : lost money, 360 : losing even more money)

-PS3 over the long term will become the dominant system people will once again realise why we all love sony ^_^.

-xbox will release the 720...only to lose even more money as the battle turns out to be just like PS2(ps3) vs Xbox (xbox 720)...even though 720 is a little stronger...it will lose embarassingly because it only will have one game ...Gears of War 3 LOL

Why did you think they made gears of war?...because they knew that halo was coming to an end with halo 3..so now they need another ONE exclusive to "carry" their box. Gears of War ^_^...as much hype as gears of war will get..as with halo ...it will not be able to carrry a system by itself. PS3 will continue to produce next-gen games.

-Blu-Ray will have won...xbox 720 will come with blu-ray...and a blu-ray attachment..will be available on 360 by late 08.

only time will tell...but for now...the verdict..PS3 will come out on top..i mean come on here?. You guys say PS3 is too expensive, do you realise HOW MUCH MICROSOFT IS SCAMMING YOU?.

Secondly...You do realize that the xbox 360 has a game to console ratio of 5.9. And continues to sell more games than the Wii and Ps3 combined right?

Thirdly you do realize that "EVERY" 3rd party game looks and plays better on the 360 and "EVERYONE" knows this.

Fourth, you do realize that there are more million plus selling games on the 360 than the ps3 right. Oh, thats right....The Ps3 doesn't have ONE million selling game yet. By this time last year the 360 had 5 million plus selling games. lol....

And last but not least.....You are aware that HD DVD has been outselling BLu ray over the last 2 months right? And that HD Dvd stand alone players outsell blu ray stand alone players 3 to 1 right now.

Oh, and lets not forget that the Ps3 has been out for 9 months yet its only sold 3 million consoles. WOW....And they are loosing in Japan for the first time in over 10 years. They are loosing in Japan to Nintendo 6 to 1. They are loosing in the USA to Microsoft 6 to 1. And they are loosing in Europe to Microsoft and Nintendo 3 to 1.

First off I hope you do realize(lightning and others here) that by the posts you make we can clearly see that your under the age of 16 and are a sony troll. But i was once 16 and i loved my genesis over the nes for whatever reason so i deep down inside understand why you stand by all of sonys mistakes and take whatever they give you and apologize and make excuses for everything they have done, theres a lundry list of mistakes and lies sony has done this gen with the ps3.

Now yes ms and the 360 have issues and have had ups and downs but they have games and a better online service yet your never willing to give credit you just want to bash what you havent used or are willing to try.

thats the problem, the problem is not the 360 faulting or the ps3 being to expensive and having no games nor a unified online service with tons of content, the problem is you and all like you who just bash and therefore really dont get paid attention to by adults but you know you fuelt he fire with xbotx that will try to counter your remarks, both of chilidsish and play no part i the big picture if sony is to win or lose or if ms will win or lose.

Now to the hardware issue, MS must address this immediatly by swapping out consoles that are in store now and adding a logo of some sort to differinciate it from older boxes, let the public know new stock thats not faulty is in its place, announce cost reduction and then reduce the prices of all sku's and accessories, announce a free version of gold so to stir up some good pr and let all the games release from end of august to december, those games will sell systems and will keep coming week after week and add the arcade title arriving and movies and shows, everyone will forget and the 360 will do just fine.

The ps3 will get new rumble controller so people like me stop B!ching about it so i can feel my ps3 games , more hits and exclusives are coming for ps3 and psn will eventually get better and have more content and services and HOME is coming, so ps3 will be fine.

BUT as much of a 360 fanboy i may be I will say this

A pricedrop alone will do nothing to help MS sell the ampunt of consoles they need to win and keep selling.
THEY MUST ADDRESS the console problem sistuation besides the 3 year warrenty, they cant just expect people TO WALK IN AND BY A CONSOLE WITH A 50/50 chance of dying just becuase it has a good warrenty, THEY NEED TO fix the issues and let everyone know its fixed or else they are doomed.

That will fix the hardware failures...

Lol, because if you want to bring the wii into this then the wii is beating the 360 like no other as well. So, anyway the wii isnt even in the the next-gen category, it's still last gen, just with a twist so lets leave it out of this because i could say the same that the wii outsells 360 EASILY.

So, if HD-DVD is outselling blu-ray so much now why do we see companies leaning more towards the blu-ray? I mean the winner isnt dependant on who sells the most whenever, it's dependent on HOW MUCH SUPPORT YOU HAVE.

I'm going to break a little here to point out that, you try so hard to bash the ps3 that you lose all sense of logic and start to throw out all you can. I am not a sony boy, I am a gamer, I have 2 xbox (used to have 3) and one 360. I only have 1 ps2 and 1 ps3. I even had the green and silver xbox. Still i have 1 ps2 and ps3, i have more xboxs than i do playstations, so please stop acting immature and speaking nonsense.

Anyway, 360 has been out a year before ps3, rushed trying to beat out ps3 simply because they knew ps3 was the better system, i mean ps2 did beat the xbox, so microsoft knew they needed to come harder. They were even going to release halo 3 at the same time as the ps3 to counter it's sales.

By the way, 360 sold so many games by this time last year, because IT WAS THE ONLY NEXT-GEN SYSTEM OUT (Lol).

Ok so, a lot of games are developed for the 360 it's cruising going a long. The games look so much better blah blah blah. 360 uses DVDs...the same as ps2 and xbox..developers know how to develop for that with ease and they are lazy so they stick to that. The truth is a lot don't want to put the time into cell, but those that realise the benefits, the big companies, put the time in and take advantage. For a system that has been out for like 2 yrs basically, you would think the 360 would OWN the ps3 right now, but no, instead the ps3 is already at par, in fact about to surpass. 360 has made a short-term system, sony has made a LONG-TERM system. The first year is not going to determine it's future. And you want to talk sales?..PS2 STILL outsells 360, what does that say to you? So stop talking sales, stop talking all of that crap, it's what each system is bringing me, that each system is giving me quality. If a product needs to give me a 3 yr warranty, i dont want it, I want them to fix their product and give me back my 1 yr warranty. 1 yr warranty makes me comfortable because it tells me that they know their product is quality. Not rushed. You are being blinded my microsoft just like how they sell you Windows Vista which sucks compared to XP.

Moving on, Yes there is no console war between the 360 and ps3, the console war will be between PS3 and the next-gen xbox, the gen after 360. 360 isn't "next-gen" persay, 360 is actually just IMPROVED, from last gen. ps to ps2 was just IMPROVED from last gen, not NEXT-GEN. PS3 has brought in more disk-space, ok , in the years to come, ps3 will REALLY be pumping out next-gen games. And everyone will realise that 360 is just improved from last-gen. I mean look at halo...give me something new please?, i used to think halo was THE BEST GAME TO HAPPEN TO EARTH, and then halo 2, i felt a little cheated, especially when microsoft admits to cheating you, it hurts, but i still had faith in halo 3, halo 3 has nothing "new", just a weapon pack, a little better lighting, another map pack, and more vehicles, halo 3 will be a good game, very fun. But don't call it halo 3, just call it Halo 2 upgraded and make halo 3 NEXT-GEN so that i can love my halo.

PS3 is working on their online experience which is good already, building an entertainment system, letting us enjoy our gaming without too many add-ons etc. I dont want to hve to pay for online games and buy a new system every 2 months just to get a new chip or add a HD-DVD player blah blah blah. No, if i wanted to do that i would have just gotten a PC where you have to pay for game subscriptions etc. I want a company to give me EVERYTHING I NEED, in my system, all i need to do is go out get my games and play no extra cost to take advantage of features i bought my system to get. I already invested money in the system, why do I need to invest more to use a feature I have already bought?, by buying the system and buying the games? and headsets etc?.

Anyway, that's just my 2 cents for now.
