I think it'll have longer legs than the Ps2 because of blu-ray and the ps2 still sells pretty decent. I'm sure the Ps4 will be out before the 10 year period but i'm sure they will stil support the ps3 for a long time.

those examples alone prove its already out of date. things change to fast so i am not going to blame sony but the sheep who continue to act like it is that is another story.

there was no need to add hdmi and redesign the system.it was included DAY ONE.it works for supporting the highest definition which is 1080p.and gamers have found out recently that it's being used for 3D.no additional redesign required.

console allows any hard drive to be added.not controlled and proprietary.you can get any size for a fair price.and when sony adds a larger drive,they don't hike up the price.the newer model sells for the same as the previous model or less.

the bluray disc has grown from 25gigs to 50gigs in less than 3 years.definitely possible for sony to increase the size again for future games.may not be the new bluray disc that was announced recently.but it can still be special bluray discs created just for ps3 for games.

any accessory can be added to ps3 to extend its life cycle.sixaxis was added.dualshock 3 was added.pseye was added.the new move controller will be added.all great additions and i know there will be more.

firmware updates have created a whole new console compared to launch.having the ability to update software means the system always evolves.

all of the above just proves that sony thought ahead and created less limits than their competitors.as long as the market holds,ps3 is definitely a 10 year console.

While I think the PS3 is more "future-proof" than the 360 or Wii, it's up to the developers and anyone else making software on the platform to keep it that way.

Sony got their act together and it's showing. Natal could prove a good challenger though. Even if Move is the better tech, Microsoft has the entire American media and collective ignorant nature of humans at their helm. Sony is a trusted brand, but they'll have to go a long way to outdo one of the biggest marketing campaigns in the history of the industry.

what sony meant by future proof is that the lifespan would be about ten years, that seams pretty good (uses ps1, and ps2 as indicators). The next wave of consoles wont be seen until 2012, and will probably be hinted at next years E3.

Every year the ps3 takes a large leap forward in terms of features.The next big leap will be move and 3d. That shows it can readily adapt to new things with a simple FW update. Need a bigger HDD? It's compatible with most SATA's. Of course it wont last forever, but it was designed to be able to adapt to whatever new tech may come out in its 10 year life span.

PS3 has set itself up for a long lifespan. It did have a little bit of a rough start, but it's exploded out now and is truly the best console on the market. Plus Sony has had great success with every risk they took. And I really think 3D will in the end, play into their favor again.

The PS2 graphically was the weakest last gen, but its strength was due in part to its library. Now the PS3 has come along and has proven that it can produce the best looking games when the right people are using it. Mix that with an unparalleled list of games offering varied styles of gameplay types and its nearly guaranteed that the PS3 will still be going strong long after the three big companies launch their new consoles.

The PS3 is in continual evolution. Sony is starting to gain ground and Natal is sort of the last battle in the war. If Sony wins this thing with Move, all focus will be shifted to the next Xbox. That's honestly what I believe.

The "future proof" quote is a publicity stunt, everybody knows that, it doesn't mean that we'll still be playing PS3 in 2050, but the "10 years plan" is as real as it gets, look at PS2, what more proof do you need ?

As new technology develops, more adjustment will be made by Sony. 3D HDTV just surfaced and already PS3 will be having a firmware upgrade to implement that feature. Even PS3's Bluray playback feature keeps improving by updating the firmware. Moreover, PS3 is just getting warmed up now that more developers ( Especially 1st party ) have learned how to develop and code more efficiently on PS3, remember the so-called "Hard to develop" excuses in the past ? It's gone now.

So in conclusion, let's see this year's E3 and discuss more after that.

Note how the author said "Removal of featureS", clearly referring to the single feature that was removed, and the argument given about the exclusion of dualshock for controllers (putting the blame on motion control instead of the lost lawsuit regarding dualshock).

The PS2 is still around why? Because it had the best tech? The best Graphics? the best online? No, No and no.
It had games that were fun, decent online and a DVD player. The PS3 went in the opposite direction. They went for all flash and no substance. So if a Repackaged Gamecube with motion controls can sell 70+ million units, then all the consoles right now are future proof.
We are in a prolonged console cycle and the same people who are loving the PS3 graphics, are the same people who said graphics don't matter last generation when the original Xbox was smacking it in that department.
So be careful what you say, maybe next generation Microsoft goes after the graphics win again, they already own the online market. It's all relative I guess.

Sony promised the world 4D gaming.. wight now, i dont see a huge difference between the PS3 and the 360..

Sure, games like UC2 show some great visuals.. but damn.. there are maybe 3 or 4 games which REALLY show some power.. 3 or 4 out of 700 available!!

If i compare Mass Effect2, Gears2, Alan Wake with KZ2, UC2 or GOW3 then i have to tell ya that the difference is THERE but it really isnt that huge to say that the ps3 is twice as powerful as the 360.. especially when i see games comming like Brink, RAGE, Reach and so on.

Considering that the hardware in the unit is at least a couple of years old already, its doing fairly well.

However, nothing is really future proof

Though it had online and an internal HDD, it also had a DVD drive that didn't play DVD movies. Once it was apparent people were buying PS2s because they were cheap DVD movie players, while the DVD movie player hack for Xbox1 became its most popular, MS answer was to offer a DVD player kit at $40.

Future proof does not mean that a piece of tech is the be all and end all, all it means is that it is advanced enough and capable of changing to meet the constantly changing technological standards of the day for a couple of years to come. By all accounts, the ps3 is on top of the other two guys in this respect.

That's why I got my 60 gig phatty and never looked back.

well technically yes it is but not really.It could outperform every PC out there in the next 5 years maybe longer.I assume you all understand how cloud computing works correct.I would also assume most of you know about onlive.But I bet most of you didn't know the PS3 can work just like onlive works.Let servers do most of the work and the PS3 can actually compete with any computer out within the next 5 years or more.Of course this would require higher and higher speeds to compete with the increase in pc's capabilities as time moves forward.But even with this at some point PC will surpass what is possible with this tech.After all the ps3 only has 1 ethernet connection and it has a limit.So truthfully no its not future proof but 10-15 year life cycle is actually possible.

technology with non-upgradeable hardware can NEVER be future proof. and no, having an upgradable HDD does not count.

the PS3 is not future proof. if a game requires a 4ghz processor, can the PS3 play it? no. if a game requires 1gb of RAM can the PS3 play it? no. if a game requires a directx 11 video card, can the PS3 play it? no.

it CANNOT be improved to keep up with new technology in the future, meaning its NOT future-proofed.

the same goes for the 360.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
