Xbox Co-Creator and Current Xbox Head Leave Microsoft

CVG: "A leaked internal memo has seemingly confirmed that Xbox heads, Robbie Bach and J. Allard have left Microsoft.

In a memo sent to Microsoft employees this morning, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced that the two were retiring from the company. There is no word yet on the pairs' plans for the future."

Ghoul5873d ago

i dont like whats happening at the xbox camp.

I do like my 360 but you can't deny the obvious lack off direction lately.
Natal isn't move anywhere to so far (hope for e3 to make it worth getting)

damn get it together

Montrealien5873d ago

if these guys are somewhat responssible for the RROD, imho, xbox will be better off without them.

So the head of the gaming division leave, and their entire Entertainment division is going under restructure, and you think things are great.

Wow. You really are a troll. Little lesson for you: when companies go under restructure, that means that things aren't good. And seriously, how many times are you going to mention the Insomniac deal?

D4RkNIKON5873d ago

darkmurder keeps mentioning the Insomniac deal in every thread all day long. Seems like he really cares about them, I wonder what his views of insomniac were yesterday?

bioshock12215873d ago

Exactly I don't get why people act like this is a big deal. It happens people get fired all the time or retire. I doubt this will effect the Xbox 360 or any other product. Just like the last guys who left it didn't affect anybody.

bootsielon5873d ago

The other one is a douche, Microsoft is much better without him considering he kept selling his stock knowing beforehand that it would go down. That is illegal if it could be proven, and why would he not know? Suspicious guy. I don't like Microsoft, but I don't like thieves either even if they steal from bigger thieves.

Godmars2905873d ago (Edited 5873d ago )

The thing is that this is happening before Natal's full debut much less a major event like E3. They're pretty much going to be talking about what direction the 360 is going, at a time when the division itself has no direction.

3-6 months down the road we could see free online or a reverse on Natal games weather its selling or not and despite all the hype for the past year.

Anon19745873d ago

There's been worrying signs from the business side of things for quite some time and I did an article about this last year.

Microsoft let go thousands of employees from their Xbox division. They slashed their marketing budget for the 360 by almost $100 million which helped increase profits but sales have been declining for some time, software revenue has also fallen off and in their last financial update Microsoft also admitted that developer interest in the 360 has also fallen off.

If you try to discuss Microsoft's struggles with the 360 you'll quickly find that no one wants to take these warning signs seriously and you're just going to be demonized by the 360 camp instead of opening up a meaningful discussion on what this could all mean to the future of console gaming. Now the management structure of the Xbox games division is being significantly altered, the 360 looks like it'll never make up the money it's lost before it's due to be retired and if Natal doesn't take off the future of the entire Microsoft games division could be at stake.

I was sitting in on a conference call with some financial analysts a couple of years ago that suggested that Microsoft would be better off focusing on software like Sega does now. It's drastic after 10 years of Xbox, but at some point the company has a responsibility to it's shareholders to turn that division around and actually make some money. You can't lose however many billion that Microsoft has between the two consoles and then say "Oh, but look. We made a couple hundred million now."
It's a business, not a charity for gamers.

sikbeta5873d ago

You know what is Worst about darkmurder comments, the guy is Trolling but There are People AGREEING With Him... WTF?

I agree with everything you just said. I've always been one for saying Microsoft should stick with software. Hell, they could work in a partner-ship with Sony and/or Nintendo on their operating system, as that, in itself is one of the key parts of the 360 and makes it in some ways excel over the competition.

TotalPS3Fanboy5873d ago

They decided to leave. That usually mean bad things. People usually jump when the ship is sinking.

Smokzdaizm5873d ago

So if Microsoft were to go software only, where would 360 customers go for their gaming needs?

Blaze9295873d ago

or maybe they got better jobs that make more money or gained new interested? In Allard's case - he's been working with the Zune. If I was working on that crap I'd want to leave to.

Anon19745873d ago

If that were to happen I imagine 360 gamers would go to Sony. God knows Nintendo isn't exactly the right fit for their preferences.

That being said I thought at the time that it was all talk. I think Microsoft has far too much invested in the Xbox brand to simply switch the entire division back to software. That being said there was a time when people probably said the same thing about Sega.

i blame
ms pricing on periperals
charging for just about everything
and lack of reliable system
if the xbox did all these well from the get go
it would have trouced the ps3 in sales years ago

niceguywii605873d ago (Edited 5873d ago )

WTF are you talking about? I'm surprised the 360 is ahead of such a strong brand that owned to generations.

Etseix5873d ago

@niceguywii60

hes just saying the truth,
**ms pricing on periperals= wifi adaptor 100$, headseth 20$ (at least i got mine at that price) rechargable batteries 20$..and so on..

**charging for just about everything= online 50$(but its ok have more features that some people need -in my case i dont-), remember this? http://www.planetxbox360.co... , and more dlc's supossed to be FREE, but MS didnt allowed it.

**and lack of reliable system= this is the easiest one to answer :), i wont say the R* sentence, but leaving aside that , we have E 74, plus it scratch ur discs (my poor Gears of War got murdered by this), and some more.

dont be angry man take it easy,

ON TOPIC: well.. people always leave but this is sad (for xbox fans)

Anarki5873d ago

I wonder what's going to happen from here on in? kinda sucks to hear.. :/

JsonHenry5873d ago

Restructure usually just means new management. Which is usually a good thing in most cases until the new management runs out of good ideas.

vhero5873d ago

Hmmm not sure how this will effect the console if it even will..

MNicholas5873d ago (Edited 5873d ago )

that the Xbox failed to fulfill it's mission.

The mission was to take over the living room.

The first Xbox was unable to compete with the PS2, while the second one, the 360, despite having a full year without any competition, being the beneficiary of various costly bribes to developers, and other hijinks that only Microsoft had the sheer wealth to do, failed to establish itself ahead of the Wii and PS3. As a result, it's got less than 28% marketshare (and continues to shrink) and an even small percentage of ongoing monthly sales. Last week, the PS3 sold 50% more units than the 360, and the Wii, more than 80% more.

As I've been saying all along, Natal is the 360's one last chance to alter it's fortunes. It's a long shot but if there's anyone with the money to pull it off, it's Microsoft.

kaveti66165873d ago

Bullshit. Failed in their mission? I don't know if you live in the states, and I'm sure you would respond, "US does not equal the world", but if MS has managed to overtake the entire US market away from Sony, and since the US market is the largest gaming market in the world, I'd say MS has accomplished a great deal.

And combine that with the fact that all third party studios are shifting to multiplatform development, when last generation many sided exclusively with Sony. This means that Xbox has become a strong market presence as opposed to last generation. Regardless of all it's flaws, the Xbox 360 has proven to be a bona-fide effort.

Now that Microsoft is restructuring the PS3 fanboys are spreading FUD about the Xbox division, nonchalantly neglecting the massive restructuring that Sony went through in 2008 and the resignation of the father of the Playstation.

That is what's pathetic. Cognitive dissonance is a problem many fanboys are facing today.

Inside_out5873d ago (Edited 5873d ago )

This is bad...REALLY bad...there are usually changes when one of the top guys move...BUT...restucturing the whole department a couple of weeks out from the biggest entertainment expo of the year....Somethings wrong...It was long over due but the timing and the level of the people leaving tells me the numbers are in and the M$ big wigs are none to happy...

Apple and Goggle have been getting stronger and stronger...M$ wants in on the whole telephone, hand held device explosion that is happening right now...The want to have there OS running all of worlds handhelds and computers...Zune and that silly Ipad copy was not gonna do it....

There is rumors of Apple getting into the console business...there does seem to be a couple of experienced guys available...more will come out...M$ losing market share everyday...the numbers must be bad...wait for more...who the heck is running E3 now...lol...big trouble...they should of bought Goggle...Hmmmm...

Pennywise5873d ago

This is the first level headed use of common sense I have seen in your posts. More posts like this without attacking someone and your bubbles might go up. Lending you one now for admitting the truth of the situation.

badz1495873d ago

I actually agreed. I'm not going to troll or anything but top managements leaving and reconstruction right before E3? that's definitely not a good sign! I just hope they'll be ok! afterall competitions are what driving the industry forward! TBH, I don't like M$ but I don't want them to leave either!

soljah5873d ago

wow just wow,
1 announce this right before the biggest gaming show of the year E3?
2 announce this right before the launch of ms biggest new product that is set to revolutionize gaming?
HUM seems things aren't all that rosey in the microsoft camp right now.

boodybandit5873d ago (Edited 5873d ago )

They are leaving right before one of the biggest events in the gaming industry and the reveal of the Natal and it's games.

Bigpappy5873d ago

This guy just keeps coming up with great I deas. He is the one guy at M$ who understood gamers and is resposible for where online gaming on consoles are today. I am talking all consoles.

DARK WITNESS5873d ago (Edited 5873d ago )

It may seem like not so much a good thing, but maybe its just what the xbox needs...

It's funny, people having been slagging off MS and the direction they have taken with the 360 and calling for change.

well, directly or indirectly the change is going to happen... still people are ragging on them. They are F"$^d if they do and F"£"$%d if they don't.

The flip side to it is,maybe these guys are not liking what they are seeing and feel it's time to move on before the S£%£"t hit's the fan. As far as I know though, these guys are as high up as it gets in terms of xbox and it's goings on, so even if people lower down were doing stuff they didn't like, they should be on top of it.

having said all that, it could just be that they are moving on for personal reasons.

Still lets see how this affects xbox and the future of it's business prospects.

Bigpappy5873d ago

One could only hope. Likes like Ballmer see it like I do. He does seem to what J to leave M$. With J at the top Xbox will be more fun and "gamer first" centric. If it was not obvious before, I am a huge J Allard fan and would feel better having him make decission about Xbox future.

Silver3605873d ago

That in all of the this the head of the xbox division john mattrick got promoted? He reports directly to the CEO, he must be doing something right. J. Allard is becoming a consultant to the CEO, sort of the watch dog of all MS tech and software.

AAACE55872d ago

I never thought of this until you said something. MS bought the company that made the technology for Project Natal! I wonder if they will put some of the creative focus for future products on them? They may be involved with the creation of the next console or Zune or who knows!

It is no secret MS wants to get some new blood in there with some new ideas, and this is how it starts! I mean seriously, Game Room is a sign that they were running out of ideas and didn't know how to speak to consumers anymore.

I like change... bring in the new people!

exactly.. i am not happy with the direction bach was going and allard sounds like he is still going to be there.. personally i would of not been sad to see him go completely as well.. if only they could of got rid of that mattrick dork because that guy is so out of touch it is dangerous to the E&D division.

this seems like a repeat of last year with John Shappert except he waited till right after E3. sound like bach will be at e3 this year again since he isnt leaving until fall.

(Apparently so..)
Just wondering why you are so hard lined in your(anything)Sony criticism? You're not married to MS, I'm,.. sure you not getting a check.... (Good for you if you are).
Again,.. just curious.

The points is, I enjoy reasoned dialog. Even if there is not agreement.

Maybe its cause these guys are so rich that they are retiring young. Would you keep working if u had millions upon millions?

Ghoul5873d ago

i would

i cant think of anthing more boring then retiring.
i do have a great job though that i love

Fishy Fingers5873d ago

It's not always so black and white, people dont leave purely because of performance, these executives are wealthy and probably lead a very stressful pace of life, usually reasons for leaving are more personal, than company related (unless of course they're fired), in fact if you read the article;

"I'm at the time in my life where I want to dedicate more time to my family and my nonprofit work, including my work with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America"

for example.

Codeman4205873d ago

true family could be involved or other personal decisions but man i will miss them both at E3 they were both better than whats his face now.

STK0265873d ago

You mean like Ken and Phil? Change is happening on both sides, and likely is a good thing. With new people comes fresh ideas, some will be good, some not as much, but that's just how the business works.

Just like Microsoft right now, Sony's gaming division (and Sony as a whole actually) had to restructure, and they come out stronger thanks to that.

The Wood5873d ago

lol

Codeman420

lol, good sport

Adrela5873d ago

Bach retired and Allard quit. There's a difference.
Sorry, but this happens quite a lot. Big companies are always losing some big employee that shocks us, when it really shouldn't. Unless more people quit, this is just normal.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio54d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing54d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9254d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit54d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing54d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9254d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

gamedeveloper.com
Eonjay56d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn257d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers57d ago (Edited 57d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn256d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown56d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos56d ago (Edited 56d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay56d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay56d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac56d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger56d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300056d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde56d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood56d ago (Edited 56d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde56d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_55d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
