IGN: Soldner-X 2: Final Prototype Review

Soldner-X 2: Final Prototype is a dazzling 2D shooter with several tricks up its sleeve. There is more meat here than in most arcade shooters, with a health system that makes for longer play sessions and plenty to do beyond the regular story mode.

Nice scores. Going to def have to give this a look. This reminds of back when games were competitively fun and refused to hold your hand.

I might pick it up as well especially after reading that review.

Sounds like this may be better.

It's much better. Your weapons aren't constantly the equivalent of a pea shooter, the enemies are more vulnerable to your attacks, and it's balanced out with a heck of a lot more bullets. If I could point out the most similar shooter I've played to this one, it would probably be Darius Gaiden, but it goes a bit beyond (beyond!) that with its firework-like bullet patterns that look more toward the Japanese "bullet hell" shooters.

The stupid chaining system that made you switch your underpowered weapons around is completely gone, and replaced by chaining by ring collection - another shoutout to later Japanese shmups! It's far more fun this way, and puts in a nice risk-reward system.

The voices and dialogue are hilariously bad. Almost Gradius Gaiden bad (which, when thinking about GG, feels a bit more intentional!). I think they're Europeans trying to sound American. Also, you had better like mid-00's Euro trance, because that's all you get!

Still, the gameplay is eons ahead of its predecessor, and it looks great. It seems like the original team got their first not-so-good shooter out of the way and went all out on this one. Well, well worth the $12.

Hoping they do Soma for PS4. I'll totally double dip for that masterpiece.

I buy from them all the time. I believe they are on the verge of some big things.

Not by the same company, but Limited Run Games is also going to offer the game "Volume" in the near/distant future.

Limited Run Games are behind this and Volume.

tanukisuit3681d ago (Edited 3681d ago )

Oh, I meant EastAsiaSoft isn't the developer behind "Volume", but yes, you are correct.

Cosmic Star Heroine, too.
