Destructoid: Red Dead Redemption Review

Destructoid writes: "All told, Red Dead Redemption is a stellar title. While I have some issues with the story and characters, the simple joy of interacting with this world more than makes up for those complaints. Add in a compelling multi-player component and you have one hell of a game".

I'm surprised they didn't join in on the ranks of many magazines/groups/reviewers who gave the game a perfect score.
IMO, the game doesn't deserve a perfect score. An 8 or a 9 suits it well, though.

bjornbear5895d ago

i'd say a 9 tbh, because its SO fun and unique...its definitely one of the most atmospheric games EVER

i've only ever felt this with FO3, U2 and Deus Ex (back in the day)

+ shooting people NEVER gets old (unlike many games)

so i'd say a solid 9 =) but its no way perfect.

horse riding is a little retarded, and glitches + some other hitches means this game is NOT perfect.

but it is great =)

va_bank5895d ago

I'm never trusting review scores again. First Assasin's Creed then GTA IV an now this. Red Dead is a great game, but it's a bug/glitch fest and NO ONE in major gaming media have noticed it!

This article will make you think twice about trusting reviews:

i'm usually not the kind of person who does this but, for some reason when i looked at that picture i thought what if there was an option to turn on a zombie mode in single player/online after you beat the game. (i usually hate these ideas but.) the reason for the dead/eye (and powerups) makes complete sense then when your surrounded by zombies.

would be a fun setting there are no zombie westerns i know of for videogames.(maybe the reason i thought of it and liked it, i'm actually tired of the whole zombies in everything mentality but this seems like a great idea.)

Even with the current control scheme it would be better than RE5

dizzleK5895d ago

i dig the zombie gunslinger idea. i'd LOVE a big open world game like this set during some type of zombie apocalypse.

i think there just needs to be more horror games period, not necessarily zombies. i'd like a war horror game, the only example i can sadly think of is shellshock 2.

rockleex5895d ago

But aliens, vampires, ghosts, etc too.

While we're at it, why not CougarMen or DonkeyLadies or GunslingerDogs?

I was serious about the first few though. ^_^

NoBias5895d ago (Edited 5895d ago )

I have to agree, man. That idea is solid. That sh*t would be so much fun lol.

Rockstar could do one hell of a zombie survival if they really wanted to... I hope they really want to...

Perjoss5895d ago

an open world zombie survival horror game with hints of R* humor would be too much to handle, would gladly give 100+ hours of my time for that!

Arnon5895d ago

A sandbox zombie game would be insane. They just need to make one in general.. like Dead Rising on roids (and without a timer).

Dsnyder5895d ago

Dude not every game needs to be about freaking zombies. Jesus grow up. Zombies are generic and have been done a billion times. This is at least something different.

Fighting waves of Chupacabras.

I'm surprised. I was expecting a 3 or 4 out of 10 so they can get some hits!

Awookie5895d ago

Don't worry they will make up for it with articles like why Red Dead is the best game so far this year, or why Red Dead is more exciting than GoW etc..

pimpmaster5895d ago

these guys gave that one sh1ttacular game a 10, whats it called again? some japanese silent hill/gta ripoff with horrendous voice acting. 20$ price i think, i wouldnt even buy that for achievements and im somewhat of an achievement whore

Arnon5895d ago (Edited 5895d ago )

This is why gamers of today are so jaded. It seems if the game is not released intending to be a AAA title, then it's trash. You should look at the user reviews for the game. They are across the board, positive in every way.

Deadly Premonition was released as a $19.99 title. It was created to make fun of itself with cheesy dialog/one-liners, silly, but awesome characters, and a story that basically just makes you say "what the f*ck" the entire way through. When you finally beat it however, you basically fall in love with it, and continue to play it afterwards. Hell, the main character is named Francis York Morgan, and he's a schizophrenic FBI agent with a separate personality named Zach, of which he talks to all the time throughout the game, including with other characters. How can you honestly think this game was made to be a mind-blowing title?

I bought the game with the mindset of "This is going to be absolutely horrible", and I purchased it to pass the time until RDR and AW released. I returned my used copy of the game for a new one about 4 days later because it's now one of my favorite games that I own.

An awesomely bad story, cheesy dialog with the most insane/silly characters ever, 64 collectables, a giant (bigger than San Andreas) map to explore, a 20 hour story and 50 side missions for $19.99. How is this a bad deal?

Raptura5895d ago

You returned the used copy to buy a new copy of the game, why? I don't understand. As to support the developer?

pimpmaster5895d ago

i guess, good for you lol. well i did complete leisure suit larry box office smash so id say thats comparable to how bad deadly premonition is, but nobody was praising how bad that one was.

kvg885895d ago

and I still don't feel I've had enough lol

Truly amazing game.

More like people don't play these type of games on their phone normally and don't try them out. Not like the places where people do play these games haven't crushed those numbers easily.

How many people actually played more than an hour of the game or came close to finishing it on mobile is the real question. If people aren't playing the games to a point that is purposeful, then why try when a subscription that is behind a streaming service isn't a sign of success but just curiosity.

What if Netflix becomes ‘the Netflix of gaming?!’

Alek83181d ago

I downloaded it because I already have a Netflix sub.
I am not going to buy it for $40 or whatever it costs on Google Play.

I tried it out and will be sticking to the PC version, but it's not bad.

Having said that, this is the issues I see vs the PC version:
1. Greatly reduced texture resolution.
2. Massive downgrade ALL lighting quality (this includes water, shadows, etc).
3. Stutter and heat. Prolonged play leads to both.
On the plus side, we have:
4. This thing is like 6GB vs the 12 on Steam.

Great way to try the game, but not the best way to play it.

darthv72184d ago

Perhaps Netflix will make a RDR series now that ST is done with.

Lionsguard182d ago

A Netflix version of RDR?... Oh boy... I can't wait... /s

TheColbertinator182d ago

They should build a production that includes members behind the True Grit remake and Hell on Wheels from AMC. Both were perfect for wild west vibes.

gold_drake182d ago

but i doubt people ACTUALLY played it on smartphone vs tried it out.

Another free update...good to know but I don't own a series X

Petebloodyonion216d ago

I’m not sure what the exact issue is. I had no trouble getting the free update—you basically get the new game for free if you have the 360 version in your digital library. Maybe the problem is related to owning or not owning the Undead DLC expansion.

Hypertension140215d ago (Edited 215d ago )

Yea I think thats what it is. I also own the game but not the expansion, and im unable to download the update.
