GTX 490 throws down to 5970

Behind closed doors at Computex, nVidia is likely to be showing its most important partners a very serious piece of new kit. The GTX490. Remember when the 7950 GX2 was considered power-hungry for pulling 110w in 3D testing? Looking back at that era, it seems that ATI and nVidia just weren’t trying hard enough.

As we continue to look under the rocks in Taiwan, more interesting information about nVidia’s new high-end card has come to light. To be honest, water-damage and exposure to UV rays means the ink has run in places and we’re looking at this document over a weak video link, but we’re pretty sure that the key info is intact. Question remains: Is it accurate?

Wow. Just. WOW.

I am gonna need a 220 plug and a new PSU just to run this damn thing!

KingKiff5844d ago

And here in Australia our power bills just went up 25%. Very little chance I will be getting one of these ever. If I want a heater I will switch on my Xbox lol, it works really well in the winter at keeping my small dedicated gaming room warm.

sid4gamerfreak5844d ago

holy sh**

My next gaming pc is gonna get one of these beasts

Letros5844d ago

"GTX490’s power draw looks to be around 375w."

Good lord...

GodsHand5844d ago

I find it pretty astonishing, that in the computer world, they try to make things smaller, but For the graphic cards they only seem to be getting bigger. I really hate these giant cards taking up an extra Pci-E slot, But I guess you either want a gaming PC, or a multi tasking PC with the extra expansion cards.

FantasyStar5844d ago

It's a by-product of supply and power. Want more power? Gotta make it bigger. I can see the link how manufactures are getting sloppy with engineering more powerful tech (like taking two Gamecubes and duct-taping them together). Then you have really REALLY good tech, but dumps out insane heat. I draw the line with Single-GPU Solutions. I won't ever go SLI or CFX based on what you just wrote and how I feel engineers can make tech that can find a balance between size and power.

SaiyanFury5843d ago

A few years ago I also played around with SLI and I found some games really didn't like it. Oblivion; one of my all time fave PC games would continuously crash under SLI, but was perfectly stable under single GPU operation. After I spent 400 some-odd dollars for an SLI setup, I also vowed to never go back to a multi-GPU setup since I found it a waste of money. I paid 400 bucks for my GTX 285 a year or so ago and my games all perform very well on all high settings with no issues. I have a relatively high end PC, but I refuse to have more than one GPU. Lord knows my games are perform better for it.

BattleAxe5844d ago

I can't see there being a huge market for this.

TrailerParkSupervisr5844d ago

the good news is you don't need a heater in the winter. Just play Crysis on high settings and your room should stay nice and toasty.

Meh, ill wait for Tom's hardware to review it... the 470 / 480 cards had lots of pre hype and looked great on paper, but benchmarks and reviews weren't as pleasant...

http://www.tomshardware.com...

The GTX 480 BARELY out performs the HD 5870 at 1680x1050, getting only 2-4 more fps, yet the 480 costs a good 100 dollars more than the HD 5870. In 1920x1080p, the HD 5870 performs better, barely.

A GTX 470 performs worse than the HD 5850, yet costs 50 dollars more than the it.

If anything, i bet the GTX 490 will be like the other Fermi cards. It'll cost more than a HD 5970, yet perform worse than it, or at best, get a very MARGINAL FPS superiority. Nothing that would warrant the higher price.

Hopefully the next gen of cards, Nvidia will step up with a better showing than these Fermi cards. I decided to wait for Nvidia to release their cards back when ATI was coming out with theirs, expecting the Nvidia cards to be better. Now i regret that decision, i could have gotten a HD 5870 at a much cheaper price in 2009 than i can today.

Pandamobile5844d ago

The performance difference is marginal on DX9/DX10 game tests, but if you see a GTX 480 running a DX11 bench next to a 5870, the 5870 doesn't stand a chance.

The 480 beats the 5970 (dual GPU) in the Heaven bench (lots of tessalation).

hoops5844d ago (Edited 5844d ago )

Real world tests and games show a different story. We cannot play benchmarks. The Fermi cards run too hot and the speed difference between the 5870 and 5970 is not worth it.
Until games come out using lots of Tessalation like those synthetic benchmarks, the advantage the Fermi cards have over the ATI 5xxx series is pointless. Moreover by the time those games do come the ATI 6xxx series will be out that will most likely have more tessalation support.

STONEY45844d ago (Edited 5844d ago )

The GTX 480 does alot better in DX11 and tesselation than the 5870 does. It's the biggest difference between the two, and it's not something small either, it's a pretty large gap.

Edit: Panda beat me to it, like always, why did I decide to look at this tab last?

wicko5844d ago

Yeah, but synthetic tests is hardly a good measure of performance, real application benchmarks are the important part, and that seems to be where the 480 is flopping. The sad part is that the 480 is *supposed* to beat the 5870, considering it is $100 more expensive. I'm just waiting for the 5890 to show up and bring prices down.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio24d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing24d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9224d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit24d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing24d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9224d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
