GOTY 2010 – Toughest Yet?

This year could potentially be the toughest choice for Game of the Year, with the line-up being exceptional. This of course is excellent news for us, the gamers, but what do you have your money on?

Faztkiller5848d ago

I don't really like trying to pick a GOTY I love a lot of games and its hard to pick the greatest game of the year.

Venatus-Deus5848d ago (Edited 5848d ago )

Contenders so far:

Mass Effect 2
GoW III
Mario Galaxy 2
RDR

Possible remaining unreleased contenders:

StarCraft 2
The Last Guardian
Halo Reach
GT5
LA Noire
LBP2

In all likelihood the awards from various publications/sites will be spread across a mixture of the above games.

There’s going to be no obvious winner this year unless something special happens in the next 6 months.

Best. Gaming. Year. Ever.

ThanatosDMC5848d ago (Edited 5848d ago )

I doubt Star Craft 2 will get GOTY mainly because people who've played the first will feel like they all ready played the second. Nothing wrong with keeping it the same but at the same time, it's not like those next gen RTS games that made everything so much better.

I'd pick ME2 if there's not a PS3 game i can remember on top of my head. I'm not really a big fan of GOW since it's a hack and slash no skill type of game. DMC fanatic here.

If we're lucky, maybe Dead Space 2 would be a GOTY type of game.

iamnsuperman5848d ago

RDR in my opinion should not be game of the year...The game is good but the graphics are nothing to shout about especially when the game is plagued with glitches....ATM it should be GOW 3 but Black ops, GT5, Medal of Honour or even Killzone(if the rumours of naughty dog leading a hand are true)

BeaArthur5848d ago

I don't like GOTY year because a lot of times the games are so different. How am I supposed to compare ME2, GoW3 and RDR (not to mention all the games that haven't been released yet, Halo: Reach and GT5) when they are all totally different games.

Trey_4_life5848d ago

GOTY is already secured for god of war 3 with heavy rain in second and mass effect 2 a distant 3rd.

BeaArthur5848d ago

Your bubbles say it all.

booni35848d ago

Bayonetta is a contender for GOTY. sorry, i know some will be offended but quality is quality, whether the lead is male or female.

tavo11175848d ago

I think the games that will be fighting for such title are: Mass Effect2, God of War3, Heavy Rain, Bayoneta, Red Dead Redemption, Super Mario Galaxy 2. Expecting to see Metroid Other M, Gran Turismo5, Halo Reach, Little Big Planet 2, maybe if it comes out this year The Last Guardian.

This really is the greatest year in gaming history.

poindat5848d ago

Wow, you've just reminded me what an eventful and game-packed year it has been... and the year's only half over! You really couldn't ask for a better start to the year, and I'm willing to bet that the end will be just as amazing, if not more so.

Of course, with all these great games, it will be nigh impossible for any single GOTY candidate to be considered. I mean, just the fact that so many great games have released early in the year pretty much dooms them from GOTY perspective. Many gamers have short memories, and trust me, when they are caught up in the hype for all the newer releases later this year, they will forget games such as Mass Effect 2 and Heavy Rain and God of War 3. It's an unfortunate circumstance that repeatedly proves itself true year after year, and this article is an indicator of this, focusing on the future rather than what we have now.

In the end though, all that matters is that we've had an excellent start to the year, and no less.

uplank5848d ago

Dont think GOW3 - its not got as much a universal appeal as other titles.

kenpachi5848d ago

funny the first 2 GOW war games got GOTY why wouldn't the third

PiTCHBLaCK5848d ago

one can argue because of all the other cool games coming out :P

uplank5848d ago

Yeah that was my point. Its not as universal as some of the other titles.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8530d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele30d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla30d ago (Edited 30d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk30d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay30d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit30d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg30d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10130d ago (Edited 30d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14930d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle43d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker44d ago (Edited 44d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit43d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog43d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_43d ago (Edited 43d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog43d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad43d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_43d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage43d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda43d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS55d ago (Edited 55d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.
