Microsoft Begins Exclusivity with Fable 3

The PC platform has numerous download services that compete with one another. Microsoft has always been lacking on the PC side of things. However, Microsoft’s exclusivity over the other companies seems to begin with Fable 3 as it is only offered through Games for Windows LIVE on Demand. I guess Microsoft finally realized it can have a potential grip over each download service by offering 360 only games through their on demand service. Will this strategy really work out for them?

Ha good luck to Microsoft on this one, I reckon they have left it too little too late to get a strangle hold on the DD market. It isn't particularly inspiring that they have started this with Fable 3. It seems most PC gamers were quite happy to live without Fable 2 I can't see number 3 making them go "OMGZ I got to use GFWL on demand from now on".

If anything not releasing this game on steam will inevitably kill sales of the title leading to claims of "it's those pesky pirates again". This is just another half hearted attempt by MS, they might have achieved it if they had done this with Alan Wake but no way will they achieve this with Fable 3.

I've never seen a single PC gamer say a positive thing about GFWL. It's always bad whenever it's being discussed. Pretty stupid to keep your PC games exclusive to the most mocked DD platform in the world, even if you happen to be the ones running it. Think it would be better to shut that clown show down and run their stuff through Steam.

MS and Valve have always been tight. So I've always been a little puzzled why they never quite put the pieces together on this one.

Seems like it would be a win for both of them.

Steam gets some additional games & store traffic.

MS gets a legit digital distribution platform to deal from.

Head scratcher.

Remember what people were saying about Microsoft when they entered the console business?

Sounds familiar.

mcgrawgamer5849d ago (Edited 5849d ago )

no where near the same vein. Most pc gamers (me included) remember when MSFT tried to charge us for GFWL. Catalog is trash compared to Steam, Impulse, D2D, GOG. Hec it's not even comparable to battle.net

I have 1 GFWL game Batman AA got it for 12 bucks and guess what it links to my xbox account. MSFT is trying to make GFWL the xbox of PC real and that is NOT going to work. It hasn't worked up to this point. MSFT tried to 'crap' on pc gamers and this pc gaming alliance was nothing more than an insult. Now if they can prove me and the other millions of pc gamers wrong more power to them but as it stands now they should save face and bow down to steam as far as I'm concerned.

likedamaster5849d ago

Agreed vanessa.

On another note, I use all kinds of downloading services to download exclusive games... this will be no different.

ALFAxD_CENTAURO5849d ago (Edited 5849d ago )

Every Product from Microsoft compared to other product is not good.

Compare Games for Windows to Steam, or D2D. Games for Windows Live sucks compared to those.

kaveti66165848d ago

GFWL sucks donkey bawls.

Microsoft enters too many markets with halfheartedness. GFWL cannot compete with STEAM and many other free DD services.

diatom5848d ago (Edited 5848d ago )

Let's talk Windows Mobile, Windows Live, Zune, or Vista.

Heck even MS's console success was partially due to Sony's initial failure to produce a machine at a reasonable price and on schedule.

a lot of us are very loyal steam users.

pangitkqb5849d ago (Edited 5849d ago )

And more. I have a few titles through GFWL (Fallout 3 GOTYE, GTA IV) and they work fine and let me interact w/friends on Xbox live as I play. It might not be the best service, but it certainly works fine.

rexus123455849d ago

I guess MS is feeling some pressure from Steam releasing on Mac. Now they probably cannot afford to ignore PC gamers any more.

JokesOnYou5848d ago (Edited 5848d ago )

Micro's main target for sales of their pc/360 games is the 360, Fable 2 wasn't for PC, so I see this as microsoft trying to explore other means of revenue through GFWL, they could have simply made it 360 only, but with this strategy anything they make off of the GFWL sales is just a plus that they wouldn't have made otherwise. They want the same people who've been playing Fable on console to continue to buy Fable3 for 360, and this is only done to attract a select group of pc enthusiasts who will try it on GFWL and thus its a few extra sales for micro total sales either way. If they really cared about legit PC sales they'd do a normal pc/360 release but they'd like to keep as much profit as they can from 360 sales, since individual pc games don't make as much profit per unit sale as 360 games.

JOY

GFWL is pretty awful. Go figure they would put this exclusively on there.

Double Toasted5849d ago (Edited 5849d ago )

Ok, now I see why they released it on pc. Its a GFWL exclusive....

Edit: Below, Blaze, yeah...they want all of that money, do they not?

Blaze9295849d ago

"The game will be available as a box copy 'and' digitally, exclusively on Games on Demand on Games for Windows – LIVE and will cost $49.99 USD."

Yeah I have to admit when I first heard the news about Fable 3 I was quite "pleased" I had hoped it indicated a turning point for Microsoft and a renewed desire to support PC gaming.

Now the details are emerging I should have guessed there was something "more" behind all this "hey PC guys we love you really, in fact we love you so much we are going to bring fable 3 to the PC".

I saw a post on another board earlier and they were speculating that perhaps steam arriving on the Mac has rattled a few cages at MS HQ and this is MS's response to that.

Either way at the moment I am not worried about GFWL on demand it will take a hell of a lot more than an RPG by Molyneux to get me to go anywhere near GFWL.

Pandamobile5849d ago

If it's only available for download on GFW Live it will fail extremely hard.

No one wants to use that shit.

MexicanAppleThief5849d ago

What's so bad about it? Seriously, I have no idea.

Pandamobile5849d ago

It's clunky, slow, and just a pain in the ass. 90% of the crashes I get in my GFW games are caused by the Games For Windows application itself.

MexicanAppleThief5849d ago

Well, that's a shame. I was hoping to buy this game on my soon-to-be gaming laptop...

Fable II - A Fantasy Series at Peak Performance

Fable II launched back in 2008 and remains the best the series has offered. Ahead of the series comeback, it's time to look at the classic.

Crows901068d ago

They gotta bring back those gargoyles!

Dudeson1068d ago

I'd love to play it again, this time on pc though. Forever waiting on that pc port.

GaboonViper1068d ago

Loved this game, oh and i always saved my dog at the end, hope the new Fable has a animal companion.

got_dam1068d ago

Fable 2 was the best inthe series. Peter waaaaaaay over promised with fable 1 and it was good but disappointing. He didn't go crazy eith hype for the second game and it was surprisingly awesome. Then he ran his mouth promoting 3 and it was the worst of the 3.

cthulhucultist1068d ago

Funny story: Fable 3 had a funny way of keeping the promises you made in the first half of the game and having enough money to defeat the darkness.

You only had to collect enough money to buy 2 stores in a busy market district. You then raise the prices to maximum and you turn xbox 360 internal clock 99 or more years ahead.

The next time you load the game, all the rents from the 99 years are collected immediately.

But yes I agree that 3 was the weakest of the three.

Demetrius1067d ago

I only got to play it once 😩 I'm so tempted to buy a Xbox 360 slim but planning on getting the series x soon since I got a PS5 in February Im ready to get saints row 1&2 back, GTA 4, fable 2, but I also want to play infamous 1&2 again Sony screwed us over with the stream only for saints row 2 and other gems smh
