CVG: Will Google TV come to PS3?

P Steen at CVG: Google has announced their new web TV service in a partnership with Sony and Intel. Sony will be tasked with creating HDTVs and Blu-ray players incorporating the platform. This raises questions as to whether the service will come to the PlayStation 3. Sony also provides comment on the rumour.

Oui, yes, da, ano, ja, jah, ya, sim, ie, aye, too right.

claterz5859d ago

Probably only for PSN premium customers, it's being announced at about the right time (just before the announcement of Premium at e3). If they keep adding things to the current free service no one is going to feel the need to change.

techie5859d ago

Agreed. Would make premium PSN an even better buy.

BenCrazy4245859d ago

I'm hating this psn premium talk.

Though it is a good idea, wouldn't you want all of the ideas of premium for free? Have betas and rent games exclusively on the ps3, watch tv, google chrome. I wouldn't mind paying for it, but they sure would kill the 360 in sales more than they are now.

techie5859d ago

Would be nice to be free - but PSN is losing money and games need to be funded. If you get free games with the premium service then...well it should be fine for those who want it. I mean you have to pay £100 for PlayTV, why would Google TV be free?

sikbeta5859d ago (Edited 5859d ago )

If so, this is Bravia + PS3, you know in order to Push their Products, but at the same time I'm sure they'll not forget about 35m PS3 owners...

Ju5859d ago

Would want to know how that would work. Android runs its own Linux kernel. Or they just port the framework to the PS3's GameOS...

And if Sony is on board, why with intel ? Weird...doesn't look like the consumer electronics guys and gals have anything to do with the PS3.

Darkstorn5859d ago (Edited 5859d ago )

It would be nice to have this added as a free feature, but I suspect it will be a premium service, unfortunately.

But it WILL come to the PS3 in some way, shape, or form.

Seems like a no-brainer.

Not bringing it to PS3 would be idiotic.

Heartnet5859d ago

Yes it would be ^^ but there may be problems and such that means they cant bring it to Ps3 or sumin stupid.

SilverSlug5859d ago

I'm sure of it. Premium feature.

Would I pay? For this, dunno. It is not really TV, just web videos on TV. The browser might be cool if it works. Hulu/Viacom does not seem a part of it.

I assume Crackle will be a part and soon, after it grows, it will get more people.

In the end of the day, Hulu is being really restrictive with what it plays on. If Sony can get users to pay to watch, large amounts, other TV stations will join and it will be epic.

Hulu atm wants to 'charge to watch' and if it wants to do this, it best be part of this PSN Premium. Large market with Google TV if it happens.

mcgrawgamer5859d ago (Edited 5859d ago )

I'm all for it. I'm not a baseball fan but the mlb app is something to behold on the ps3; Google TV would only add to some already nice features on the ps3. If sony ever inked a deal with the NFL it's a wrap for me. I see a lot of interesting things to come from E3.

As more people unlock and Sony shows more people how to unlock teh powa of da cell! the ps3 and sony as a brand can really expand.

and I'll ask this again what happened to Microsoft's IPTV?

Zeevious5859d ago (Edited 5859d ago )

So your PS3 doesn't need to be on all the time, and even if playing a game it records...without new hardware...available anywhere on any device you have.

Like Slingbox meets TiVo meets Universe -- Definitely worth the premium PSN fees!

Ju5859d ago

Won't work. It's basically a video streaming service over the network and done in SW only. Requires to much horse power and memory and bandwidth to run in the background while games are on.

Zeevious5859d ago (Edited 5859d ago )

This won't work if it was the PS3 doing all this, using all this bandwidth & running in the background during games.

That's why unless there is hardware involved it has to be a 'remote DVR'
The streams are recorded remotely on a server, you simply access that server/drive from your PS3 through an interface.

You could even run it from the XMB, and check updates or make changes in the middle of a game with the PS/Home key...it requires so little power.

The easiest legal solution to any copyright issues is your contract includes lease of hard drive space on a remote server. Technically, it's then no different than any other DVR.

No unusual power, memory or bandwidth is needed, you are only running the interface to the DVR/TV and don't even need the scheduling component to run on your PS3...just that interface when needed.

For an example of exactly how this works, see the remote DVR capabilities of AT&T U-Verse...or Netflix streaming.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle37d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde44d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy44d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
