`Alan Wake' inspired by Stephen King, David Lynch

Ask most video-game designers about their inspirations and they will mention other games. But Sam Lake, the lead writer of Microsoft's "Alan Wake," drew more from books, especially Stephen King's.

"The setup of the game _ a best-selling but troubled writer whose dark work of fiction starts to come true, blurring the line of nightmares and reality _ is a very Stephen King type of a starting point for a story, so King's works were definitely a source of inspiration for us," says Lake, whose script name-checks the horror master right at the start.

Can not wait to play the game, hopefully it would scare me as SH2 did.

eggbert5852d ago

It's not so much scary as it is a thriller. You'll be on the edge of your seat at times, and you'll have a few spooky moments but it's nothing compared to the old SH's (at least for me).

There were two main problems I noticed while I was playing and that was:

The lip syncing was terrible. Not much else I can say about this.

Sometimes trees would block the screen making it hard to see what is going on.

What about David Cronenberg, the greatest horror director of all time? Or H.P. Lovecraft, the greatest horror writer of all time?

I hate David Lynch. He makes intentionally convoluted films that don't have logical endings and then all the critics try to save face by calling it art.

Funny you should say that...the ending in AW is definetly WEIRD...having said that...chapter 4 should of been the ending...with the doctor...sorry, thats all I can say....Great game, on my second play thru know on harder difficulty...

A Late Look: Alan Wake

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "All in all, it’s not hard to see why Alan Wake has received a bit of a cult following (there’s that famous foreshadowing again). It’s a title that blends themes and gameplay, while pushing the limits of storytelling by putting stories within stories and letting you read those stories before you get to that part in… the story. It has flaws, to be sure - the gameplay side can’t quite keep up with the rest of its ambitions - but overall it’s a great game that stands out among its peers and is undeniably… one for the books."

Kind of a goody story...

On a serious note, that is why I try activating gift cards asap. It's happened to me where the store didnt scan it right where the card was unusuable. Happened at Wally World.

gigoran8773d ago

wait, that place is real? national lampoon wasn't kidding?

jznrpg185d ago

People sometimes call Wal-Mart Wally World including myself

I just bought two of the MonsterVerse Godzilla movies on 4K - both had digital copies expiring in 2023. Both were actually expired.

I'd be surprised but it's WB, of course they'd actually expire them

Knightofelemia773d ago

Usually most of those redemption card have an expiry date on them. If they expired all buyer did was buy recycled paper. And some of those codes are country locked to certain countries. I buy a card from the States I can't use it in Canada.

Dumb and silly story. She wasted her money for no reason.

Is it really that hard to go to Steam or GOG. She spent $240, when its currently 70% off on GOG, and only costs $4.49.

Gee, I wonder, should I spend $240 on eBay, or $4.49 on GOG? 🙄

Rynxie773d ago

Most likely she wanted to resell a few or most of them. However, it was a too good to be true situation.

Profchaos773d ago

So in short she paid $240.00 assuming usd for a bunch on unactivated game codes.

I still don't understand why I guess cause there's not a physical version and she wanted something for a collection or art project.

Rynxie773d ago

No, most likely to resell. However, she ended up getting screwed.

Asplundh773d ago

This is Alan Wake 1, it had physical copies.
