I also agree a 3 yr warranty is sufficient. It instills customer confidence bc they know that if they do have problems the finincial burden of repairs will not fall on them. It is also the best warranty available in the console industry.

Not to mention that the Red Rings are not affecting all customers making a recall impractical.

Microsoft should just issue a life time warranty ONLY for the red ring of death. I know electronics break down over a period of time, but they already stated that it was a design issue that causes the problem. That doesn't mean that every console will break, it just means that every console is at risk. To receive a free 3 year warranty on any console is a god send, but a life time warranty on a fault that you, Microsoft, and every Sony fanboy knows could happen would be a lot more reassuring.

The three-year warranty was enough to persuade me to finally buy one a couple of days ago. Am I worried that the hardware may be flimsy? Sure. But this flimsy console has a ton of games out right now that I've been itching to play for a long time, and I can't wait anymore. I'm currently having a blast playing Gears, and as soon as I'm done with that I have Crackdown, Oblivion, GRAW and Lost Planet lined up. I would have bought more games but I freakin ran out of cash, and since I have a real life I may not finish playing through all the games I've already bought for another month or so anyway. I'm as happy as a pig in slop, and I'm too busy enjoying myself to think about dumb crap like design defects or faulty manufacturing processes or what have you. Besides, if my unit breaks tomorrow or next month or next year or next next year my ass is good and covered.

So what does my personal experience as a recent 360 buyer tell me about the whole RROD kerfuffle? With a 3-year warranty it has become a non-issue. It may be a drag to have to send the thing back, but if you lead a well balanced life you'll find other things to keep you occupied in the interim. All I can say is while it's working it looks smashing on a 50-inch screen and sounds fan-f***in-tastic on a 5.1 set up. I've had a wii since January and in two days I've had more fun on the 360 (girlfriend still prefers wii though). So if you are anything like me (male, has an average job/salary, engages in regular physical exercise, has a girlfriend and friends who hang out once in a while) I have no problem recommending the 360 as a gaming experience. You won't have enough money or time to finish all the good games that are already out for the system for at least a couple of months (that's just the off-line stuff), and there are yet more exciting games in the pipeline. The only caveat I may have is that if you can stand to wait, do hold out for the 65 nonometer chip for greater reliability and a likely discount, both said to be coming around the holidays. I myself could wait no longer but have absolutely no regrets for plunging in.

If after all that all you can think or talk about is the RROD, then I have to assume you never wanted a 360, and whatever problem you may have with it has nothing to do with gaming.

I think Peter has been handling himself well, a little humility goes along way, but don't talk to much Peter, just keep working on fixing the damm things.

It goes without saying that everybody hates buying something only to have it turn out to be faulty or defective in a short time period. What I find amazing is while this is definitely a sore issue for M$ and obviously there has been alot of legitimate scrutiny over this issue, IMO there has also been plenty of public ridicule by every website looking for hits, attention, traffic, etc. reposted on N4G daily but still 360 fans believe in their console, maybe 360 fans are just stubborn bastards, I mean its been beat to hell, but it still sells pretty good, could be alot better though, and yet personally I've never had a problem with mine, but even if I did, I just don't think it would bother me other than the initial fustration and the annoyance that comes with getting it repaired.....still 360 would be my console of choice, which is simple, -same reason those who prefer the PS3 would support it even through difficulties, IT HAS THE GAMES I PREFER, I like both consoles in general, who doesn't?, PS3 definitely has some great games coming that the gamer in me likes, but I prefer the 360, simply because for me it has the majority of the games that are must have exclusives.

This is the fundamental thought that fanboys on both sides don't seem to understand gamers/mass consumer will always opt for the console that has the majority of games they want to play *whenever they are ready to buy, of course over the life cycle of these consoles that could go back and forth....but its a preference thats all. Yes the very hardcore/fanboys just care about the brand, but really the mass market gamer favors one or the other simply because, most people won't buy both, they make a simple choice, all fanboy PR/hype aside, it comes down to one of them has game A, B, C that wont be on the other console and vice versa.

Tells you something doesn't it? After all this crap people still support 360, I don't know, maybe because its great? When it works of course. I sent mine back once and didn't have to go through a bunch of b.s. in the process. I can't speak for everyone, but I was impressed how quick I was able to send it in and get it back, no hassles. Feel a lot better now with the extended warranty just incase.
